A blackened PSA

You guys know I’m not particularly enthusiastic about blackouts, but when somebody asks you nicely to spread the word about something Dawg-related they’re pushing, well, it’s hard to say no.

With that in mind, there is a move afoot to get the fans to wear black Saturday night at the Mississippi State game.  (I will admit that blackout games look a lot cooler at night, for some reason.)

In any event, you heard it here first.  I’ll wear black if you will, too.

  1. Thank you Senator! Now, here’s what I’m sure I’ll read in the comments… fake juice, remember Bama 08, stick to red, etc. But before you go down that negativity trail ladies and gentlemen, please read this first. Yes, we lost in 08 to Bama wearing black. In fact we lost horribly. But that 08 Bama team was 12-0 In the regular season. They whipped teams wearing all kinds of jerseys. We’re 3-1 In black, and we pulled off another win during a fan based blackout. This, by the way, is just a fan based blackout. A 75% win percentage is good odds in my book. We hope the players will wear black, but on a weeks notice, I doubt it. I know it’s not everyone, but the majority of the fan base loves it, the players get pumped, and we need Sanford Stadium to be as loud and intimidating as possible for this game. Fitzgerald is the best QB in the SEC this year, and you know recruits are going to be in attendance. It’s a night game, primetime on ESPN, and a big SEC matchup. Kirby has already said they’ll wear black once a year, so get used to seeing it. Plus we got the Spike Squad on board. Help our Dawgs out, spread the word, and I’ll see y’all in Athens this Saturday! Go Dawgs!

They are jerseys, not popeye’s spinach or superman’s kyrptonite. UGA has one of, if not the, best looking alternate uniform in college football. Most fans not enrolled in AARP seem to like them as do the recruits. Use them in a big game though, not a 12:00p snoozer against Louisiana Lafayette.

I still vote for wearing them on a schedule every year. Against Tech one year, then Florida in Jax the next, then Auburn at home the following.

The Facebook post asks me to wear one on my school’s colors. What is the controversy in that?

What people don’t understand here is that this is FAN ATTIRE. We’re not asking that the team go black. If they do, even better but it’s not critical.
Yet some folks get all up in arms about this.
Just think if everyone poo pooed Light Up Sanford which was only started by the fan base? Look what that’s turned into in less than two years?
Let’s just have fun and do this!

Exactly Alan. Lighting up Sanford heading in to the 4th caught on quick, looks great, creates energy in the stands, and no one whines about that! I think most of the people that complain don’t attend the games. They can wear any color they want at home. The lack of enthusiasm from fans has been grinding on my nerves lately. Our fan base needs to embrace things like this.

After South Bend, that’s an interesting criticism.

You’re right. That sounds counterintuitive to what we’ve saw there, but those were true fans who made that trip. On my way to the last few games in Athens, the fans aren’t chanting, calling the Dawgs, and just seem way too quiet. I’ve noticed it getting worse over the years. It seems folks don’t even want to be loud while we’re on defense like they should. This isn’t the majority of fans, but way more than I care for. I like fans that like to stand and cheer and keep the energy flowing throughout the stadium. If they’re not there for that, to show support, they should watch from home and free up some tickets.

I actually prefer when the stadium is covered in red. After what happened with Bama in 2008 I believe we should leave blackouts alone going forward. Fake juice that sometimes bites us on the ass.

Kirby remembers 08 well. Maybe his opinion should be elicited.

We got whooped by Bama in 2015 with red jerseys. The common thread in this is Bama was good and we were not. Jersey had nothing to do with it.

We will be wearing black. It is fun to come together as a fan base and show the time our support. I love lighting up for the fourth quarter. It was sad to see all the fans leaving right before the fourth quarter last week. We will be there and be loud all game!!

It cracks me up when someone complains about the black jerseys, especially related to its not one of our colors. I believe the announcer starts every home game when the team is about to run on the field with: “if your blood runs red and BLACK…….”

  13. If you think the color of the jersey matters to the outcome of a game then all I have to say to you is be glad breathing is an involuntary response because you are too stupid to do it on your own
