“He’s got to practice just like everybody else has got to practice.”

Jacob Eason’s teammates and his head coach haven’t noticed any problems with his demeanor.

That’s probably because they lack the keen observational powers and expertise of Eason’s long-distance Internet psychoanalysts.

I think the logic goes something like this. Fans and media people speculate based on flimsy sideline observations. The media asks coaches and players questions based on the speculation. If they answer, then they’re just putting a positive spin on it. If they don’t answer, there’s something there they’re trying to keep under wraps. It isn’t possible that the speculation could be wrong.

Rickus, I’d say the speculation arises from (a) big recruit starter gets replaced; therefore (b) he’s gonna mope and transfer. With respects, sideline observations aren’t even necessary.

I don’t expect Eason to mope as it isn’t the mature response that you’d expect from a leader even if removed from leadership.

The simple truth with a highly recruited QB is only 1 QB is on the field, and other schools would likely want his services if they aren’t being used on Saturday. If you were the starter fight to get the job back in a respectful way. If he doesn’t win the job back, evaluate circumstances and options at the end of the season.

Add to that the cameraman’s panning of the bench and sideline to see him uninvolved in the game and the questions were inevitable. I’m sure it remains on YouTube since it was replayed on TV with those camera shots intact from the game. You may want to look for yourself.

And most QBs involved with what’s going on the field will be on the sideline keeping up because he knows he will be going in at any moment if crap happens. I look at Eason as the senior QB who can help the QB in the game with what he learned facing these same teams last year, also he could engage other O players during the game as to the tendencies the QB or linemen are noting while they play, i. e., he’s engaged with the team’s play. I look for Eason to continue to be the QB running this team and who is ready to reengage at a moment’s notice.

  6. It’s amazing to watch a fan base turn on Eason as quickly as many have. He was hailed as a savior when he arrived on campus and was the center of attention at #93KDay. He was thrown into the deep end of a shark-infested pool last year as a true freshman in a throwaway season and won a bunch of games behind a shaky offensive line with an OC who didn’t scheme to take advantage of his strengths. 10 months later he’s a bum that some have said he needs to stand on the sidelines to ask Fromm the proper number of ice cubes for his Powerade. Now those same people who hailed him as savior pretty much have said, “Don’t let the door hit your @$$ on the way back west.”

I want the team to play the QB that gives us the best chance to win. If that’s Fromm, fine. If it’s Eason, fine. I also want our fans to show some class to a guy who could have changed his mind twice after coaching changes (Bobo then Richt).

Nice post. I doubt it’s really that many “fans” that are acting this way. I certainly hope it’s not the “fan base”.
While all would agree that Fromm is a heck of a football player with great competitive, leadership and athletic qualities (the kid just looks like he was made to go out there and compete for UGA), I would hope that they would realize that Eason also possesses the same set at a lower level in some areas and perhaps higher in other areas. They are both very good.
The emergence of the amazing running attack has been the real story of UGA’s great year..but there is one other factor that I think is important..Fromm’s propensity to make a quick decision and run for needed yardage several times. Also his confidence level is high. These are the two areas that Eason must improve on and I’m betting he has and will continue to.
I don’t care which one marries my grand daughter as long as one of them does.

      • Fromm’s running ability has been a pleasant surprise. Eason didn’t run much last year and mainly only to buy time to throw. You’re right … both have skills and both need to work on some things. Fromm has the “it” factor. Eason has the NFL size and arm. Hopefully, Fromm can develop physically and Eason can mentally.

          • No – I was joking … I left off the ;-). But there have been groups of our fans who started calling from Fromm to be the starter as soon as he stepped on campus and have made comments about Eason’s off the field activities/proclivities for Athens nightlife.

Personally, I am Team Eason on this one. I think he is the best QB on the roster and if the coaching staff didn’t believe that in Game 1 then Fromm would be been the starter. I don’t think Eason is healthy enough yet to be the starter.

This coaching staff has already been through a season with a true freshman starter. Maybe that experience helped them craft a game plan that will work better this time around. Clearly the offensive line is playing much better, the receivers are playing much better, and the defense and special teams, all of which led to better success this time out.

I am ecstatic with Fromm’s play but nearly every analyst in our games have pointed out that he makes his passing read and decision pre-snap. He locks onto a single receiver and stays with it. Fortunately, he has been adept enough to make the right decision on the throw and has made few mistakes.

I do think the coaching staff is reluctant to make a change at this point, especially if Eason is 100%, and not disrupt what is working really well. However, if we get to a point where Fromm is struggling and Eason is healthy, I hope he comes in and lights it up.

These things always get me. You mean to tell me a college kid who happens to be a tall, long haired QB at a major SEC program with one of the best college down towns is spotted enjoying an evening out. I am shocked, completely shocked.

I don’t see Smart allowing him to skip practice and view that as internet garbage.

He has struck me as a mature kid who has handled the press and QB competition with tact. I expect him to do what he can in practice to win the job back. I don’t expect him to mope or cause drama. As I posted above if he doesn’t win the job back, I would expect him to consider his options at the end of the year. He only has a handful of year of eligibility only 1 QB gets meaningful playing time, and he likely has the skills to get drafted if he starts in college.

As a head coach Smart also has to consider the possibility that if he isn’t starting, he is a risk to transfer and manage the roster accordingly.

I continue to think it’s not only entirely possible but perhaps even probable that Eason wins the job back later in the season. Fromm is doing great, no question. But keep inmind he’s been asked to do very little. Can we beat Auburn or Alabama with such a limited playbook? Maybe. Maybe not. Most of the few passes Fromm has thrown have been pretty safe calls. He’s benefited from a much improved offensive line and a stable of running backs that can rotate in and out and stay fresh. I’m not complaining. He’s done admirably well. But he hasn’t had to put the team on his back and win. Something Eason has done multiple times behind a vastly inferior line. Each has strengths and weaknesses. But Eason’s experience and arm may put us in the best position to win late in the season. My grand daughter is much too young for either Fromm or Eason so I don’t have a dog in that hunt.

Obviously, it was all tongue in cheek…..I bet you are more fun than a barrel of monkeys at a party. I also find it humorous that if some think that Fromm is best suited for the starting QB, that it is an indictment on Eason. I’m pretty sure that most want both QB’s at UGA….I know that I do. Loosen up dude, quit taking things so seriously on here. We are 6 & 0, I’m happier than a pig in slop. If you are mad because of the QB situation, go tell Smart. I get the feeling that if the Patriots called him and asked him to sub for Tom Brady next Sunday he’s show up ready to rock-n-roll.
But Eason isn’t chopped liver..and will still be needed and used. I wouldn’t be surprised to see either of them starting by UF…wouldn’t disturb me either way..and knowing we have the other as a backup if things went south is a peaceful, easy feeling.

I’m all for Eason reentering our Dawg games, especially to see him with a better line in front of him than was the play last year. I’ve always considered him the QB of this team because he paid for it in spades last year.

I don’t have to defend what is placed here as an observation and, having never disparaged his play, am concerned if his lack of play could dim his objective to enter into the fray again. Your vision of my words is a bit low of the mark, Senator.

I asked a question that you and Chili have not replied to, but others were open enough to reply and in a manner that didn’t slide you into one camp or another. Your try at setting up a big 1-2 QB fuss is really a reach with what I posted. I read the article you posted yesterday and was glad to see the remarks from coaches and teammates. Guess they all didn’t come here to see what fantastic observation I had posted, but it could mean that there were observations of the same thing by others (as there has been here if you keep reading replies in kind to what I posted).

Trying to set up opposing encampments by interjecting your supposition from my post won’t prove to be as easy as you may have thought when there are people who post after reasoning for themselves.

To all that may be interested, I have made no remarks concerning an affinity for either QB’s play above the other and think that assailing a player’s character at UGA is as repugnant as trying to stomp a QB’s reputation before he transfers in and has thrown a ball as a graduate student as Greyson did. Continuing to post negative things about him didn’t even let up after he established a new collegiate passing record for UGA. The old axiom of beating a dead horse doesn’t include beating a live one until he dies or eventually fails to carry a load while behind the same type of O-line that Eason played behind last year.

You of all people shouldn’t be chastising posts about QBs and trying to characterize those posts Senator.

Yeah, I know that sounds insensitive, but he has control over such feelings and ,yeah, I wouldn’t feel swell in his place while watching something you have prepared for so long go south in front of thousands of people.

                or

Makes me think that he doesn’t agree with any coaches who certainly are telling him he is wanted and that we may depend entirely on him when he is one Fromm injury from returning to his place he had for a year. Damn, man, get into the game by cheering for those who are making your spot the most sought after position in CFB right now. Your team needs you to focus.

… as asking a question. Sure sounds like an answer based on little more than amateur, long-distance observation.

I have no interest in setting up opposing camps. I’ve said all along I’m happy with whichever kid Kirby thinks is the best option to win. Further, nobody who states a preference for whomever of the two is in the wrong for expressing that choice.

Earlier praise of Fromm’s attitude and work ethic was given while withholding such statements about Eason. And it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see the difference in engagement between the two on the sidelines. And Fromm, the less talented of the two, is our starter. Do these observations make me some kind of hater? Of course not. I wish the best for both. I don’t see why this has to be so offensive and polarizing to some.

To say “he/she doesn’t look happy” is a commonplace observation that thousands of people make about thousands of other people every day. In the context of how last Saturday and his season to date have gone I can speculate as to why Eason might have that look.

But I fully admit that he might be perfectly happy even if he doesn’t look that way to me. And my observation that he doesn’t look happy doesn’t mean that I don’t want him to be UGA’s QB now or in the future if in fact our coaches determine he is the best man for the job — I do. And it doesn’t mean I want him to transfer — I don’t. But for God’s sake don’t disparage me as some “internet psychoanalyst” just because I make the commonplace observation “Eason doesn’t look happy.”

        • I hear where you’re coming from, but I don’t have any interest in getting into a debate about how many shades of gray can be packed into an observational paint box.

Instead, what I keep coming back to — and I’ve yet to see anyone challenge me on it — is a simple test: can you honestly say to yourself that Kirby Smart would tolerate a kid who [insert observational analysis here]?

Eason won the starting job last season and kept the job this offseason. But suddenly now he’s an emotional puddle because of an injury and Fromm’s emergence? And Smart’s enabling him? Occam’s Razor should be your friend here.

Eason isn’t the only Georgia starter who’s lost that role in 2017. Trent Thompson’s seen Tyler Clark start ahead of him twice and is now out with an injury. How come nobody’s turned their amazing observational skills his way?

It’s one thing to be excited about the way Fromm has performed this season and to express a preference for him as the starter. It’s quite another for someone to insinuate that Eason’s behavior is a factor in the decision when that person doesn’t have the first direct clue about the speculation. If that counts as disparagement, then I plead guilty.

I made some comments on this blog a week or two ago how I got the impression from the little I saw on TV that Eason’s attitude seemed a little lackluster. And specifically that he looked like he was thinking, “yeah yeah, whatever” while CKS was talking to him right before putting him in for some garbage time.

I added the qualifier that this was merely my impression and that I obviously had no clue as to what was going on in Eason’s head.

Regardless, I was accused by someone here of committing a sh$&ty deed against Eason. And besmirching his character.

I thought that was carrying things about far — acting like I was a character assasine. But regardless, after some thought I came to the realization that I would think it was pretty sh$&ty if I was in Eason’s shoes and someone questioned my zeal/interest. So I won’t do that again.

It’s hard to believe Eason isn’t feeling some level of resentment that a freshman has beat him out of a job that was his… I mean, I think that would be pretty normal behavior. Even more kudos to Eason if not and is taking this all in stride.

Color me skeptical that UGA keeps three 5 star QBs on hand going into next season however.

Through no fault of his own, Eason was in the nucleus of the fantastic turmoil that was last season. He was a true freshman with a bad OL. He was having to learn a new system, navigate the coaching staff overhaul, and wade through any issues in the locker room resulting from said overhaul (Remember the “karma bitch” leak?). All of that combined for a poor season and as the QB he probably gets an undeserved bad rap from some folks because of it.

On the fans’ end I think the primary reason for the “debate” is that Eason has proven what he can do in the clutch. Fromm hasn’t proved what he can do in those same circumstances. Hallelujah that he hasn’t! I’d say that’s a great problem to have.

I have had questions about Eason’s touch and accuracy and I’ve voiced them on here in debate. I even made a comment in jest on here that a pass Fromm had thrown beautifully; Eason would have thrown through the uprights! But yeah, I’ll admit that I bought into Fromm pretty quickly once he took the reins. But that’s ONLY because we were winning. Looking back rationally I’d say if Eason hadn’t gotten hurt he’d still be starting and we’d most likely still be winning. And I for one would be damn happy with that. I’d also be damn happy thinking about the future after seeing at how good Fromm was looking when he came in to mop up. I just want us to win.

I think we are way past that just wanting us to win. It is personal to some, and having selective memory helps them feel secure. I personally don’t hear, or see, many haters for either. But as usual, it has to be an either/or, black/white discussion for so many folks here. Kirby has an uncomfortable situation to deal with, but it isn’t a hard call for what to do one the field. That is a pretty simple call, and it will work itself out there…not on these boards. Now the situation at the end of the year, and as we move forward may get very difficult and, potentially, result in loss of a QB. But even there we have more good news, another savior has been born and is on the way. So next year, it seems likely we will have a minimum of 2 five star QBs to help make it through 2018. There is much angst about very little, imo. How many teams dream of having this type problem? And how many fan bases would handle this slam dunk easily while UGA fans reach for their switchblades ready to carve each other up?

One was recruited by Richt, the other by Kirby. Assumptions and reactions could be falling within those fault lines. And if that turns out to be a real thing between Eason and Kirby I really wouldn’t be surprised, just a little disappointed for Eason. He’s got such a bright future no matter what.

Man, it’s your blog, I’m just glad to be here. Ohio State did beat Saban/Kirby’s D with their 3rd string (start of the season) qb. Did so by taking the top off the d and stretching the field. Didn’t hurt that Cordelle could fall forward for a four yard gain if pressured. I recall Hermann and Kirby meeting during that off season. Total confidence in Kirby. We need both, and, I believe, they are both 100% mentally invested in team first. That’s not a camera angle analysis. Thatt’s my opinion. Analysis is Eason won 1.5 (-.5 Vols wasn’t on him) games last year on last possession (almost) drives. Have we played from behind this year yet? I’m not saying pull Fromm, Eason is deserving of reps as the gameplan and iactual game dictates. Mizzou, that’s as far as I’m looking. Peace, and thanks for putting this blog out there for us. Labor of love no doubt. It is appreciated.

  22. Always amazed at the angst caused by college football. 6-0 and be happy, no matter who is QB. And yes, folks reading into side line camera reactions is weird. Oh damn, he spit at 3:34 PM. That is bad and means he is moody and unhappy. Now if he spit at #:40 that would be great.
