Today, in Kirby gets it

Geez, this is good.

Kirby Smart stood before his Georgia football team, as he usually does at team meetings, and took a poll: Everyone in here who has beaten Florida, Smart asked them, please stand up.

There were a few awkward moments.

Nobody stood.

“It was sobering,” senior tight end Jeb Blazevich said. “With so much praise going on, on the outside, it’s like, Guys this is where we’re at. Nobody has beaten these guys.”

Take the field with the heat of a thousand suns, boys.  No prisoners.

Kirby ought to show them the 4th quarter of Spurrier’s one trip to Athens, especially the bullshit pass for a TD at the very end. Then show them the last 2 minutes of the 2008 game with the bullshit TOs. Then show them the last 2 minutes of the last 3 years (which all the seniors should remember, anyway)

I hope we go in there cold hearted and just do what we have done all year: GATA and punish the opposition every single play, start to finish.

and if we can throw a double reverse pass for a TD in the last minute to go over 50 and win by 40 plus, I am good with it.

I remember the GPOOE throwing that little POS jump pass, or faking it then ducking in for the score. I remember their inexorable drives for scores late in games that seemed to take entire quarters when we desperately needed possesions. I remember missed blocks and third down sacks, fumbles and interceptions’
I want the hated gators to feel futility and helplessness. I want them to stomp away from their big screens, unable or unwilling to watch. I want them posting on their message boards post game questioning the ancestry of their AD and Coaching Staff. I want alcohol sales to double in Gainesville next week. I want UF fans to boycott McElwaine’s BBQ Sauce.
If “Run Lindsey run” tore out a heart, I want Saturdays drubbing to be the soul crushing kind, slowly, drive by drive, squashing the will from them until, sometime in the late third quarter, the little red light in their eye goes out, just like in when the machine crushes the Terminator at the end of the movie.
      No mercy.

Back in 2010, I was really convinced we were about to turn the tide on this series. I was convinced that Aaron Murray would have the moxie it took to take control of this series. He was a freshmen, he wasn’t there for all of the times we froze up in Jacksonville, and he wouldn’t feed into the collective choke job that we’d seen so many times. While we lost the 2010 game, Aaron did end up with a 3-1 record against Florida (he owes a lot of that to Todd Gurley and Jarvis Jones).

Unfortunately, the Gators have taken the last 3 and here we are in 2017 still talking about why UGA is such a head case in Jacksonville. Let’s hope Fromm is that freshmen QB who can start a winning streak against the Gators and Kirby is the coach that will help us to sustain that success against the Gators for years to come.

Murray kept us in that game though, as a Freshman. Now granted the INT to end the game sucked. The freshman giveth and the freshmen taketh.

  9. And Smart only beat them once as a player while the rest were lopsided losses. He understands like only a tiny handful of coaches could because he’s experienced it…as a fan, player and coach of UGA. This is personal and I’m sure we’ll get a little taste of that after we win Saturday. This is gonna be the culmination of a couple decades of bullshit for this program.

You know, I’m of a different mind, here: For the past 2 1/2 decades, Florida teams have played mind games with Georgia with great success. It has led to a literal sh*t ton of unforced Bulldog errors in the game that has seen plenty a talented-enough Georgia team on the losing end of the scoreboard when the clock hits 0:00. Florida players verbally and physically (remember the eye-gouge incident?) taunt Georgia players into mistakes…and it’s like Groundhog Day every Halloween. We take the bait and find ourselves hooked.

This year, the Gators are starting the tricks from the get-go…and (if you’ll allow me to play Devil’s advocate here) we’re falling for it. Instead of treating Florida like another business trip in much the same way we did with Tennessee and Vandy, we’re posting pictures of previous games in the locker room and will no doubt have Gator player comments repeated throughout the week. We’re reminding ourselves of the mental hex the Gators have over us…and there is just as much of a chance of that carrying over onto the field of play as there is of us coming out spitting nails.

I wish everyone…from Kirby on down to the graduate assistants…would just take it all in stride and remain focused on what it is they need to do. Florida is simply another obstacle…just like Miss State…just like Tennessee…and Vandy…and Missouri. They’re not worth any extra juice as long as every opponent brings out our maximum effort and focus. Let Florida talk and treat this as another business trip. Energy and passion? Yes..of course…but don’t fall for Florida’s games. Don’t be so distracted by and focused on the trash talk that you forget to pay attention to the details and what brought you to this point: the hard work, focus, and determination to play sound, high-intensity, fundamental football for 60 minutes or however long it takes for the opponent to buckle under that weight.

    • I can see this both ways. Either embrace the reality or ignore it. Truth be told I’m not sure it’ll matter much come 3:39 this Saturday. But you make some good points on perhaps falling victim to making this game more than it should be.

Smart used the running game failures of a year ago to motivate the offensive line before Vandy. That seemed to go okay. For some of you people, there is literally nothing that would keep you from thinking the team’s going to shit the bed.

      • 2013 (should have been a blowout) and 2014 literally broke me on this game. It’s not a Kirby thing, it’s a Georgia needs to get out of its own damn way thing for me to truly feel like something bad isn’t about to happen in this game. Really enjoying this season, but it’s hard not to be cautiously optimistic given all the weird shit that seems to happen down in Jacksonville to Georgia teams over the last 30 years.

But when people ask me the question, ‘Do you really think [Jacksonville] is a neutral site?’ I say, ‘No, it’s not neutral.’ When you play in the state of Florida every year –- we fly, they drive; it’s hotter for us, it’s cooler for them. It’s played in a stadium that [used to be called] the Gator Bowl. But what the heck? If nothing else, we’ll make Jacksonville pay more to keep it there. . . . I wouldn’t feel bad having a ‘neutral site’ game in Georgia – in the Georgia Dome.”

Both teams play on that field once per year. the time it takes both teams to get from campus to the game is about the same since the Dawgs fly and Gaytors drive. who cares if the fans have to drive or fly as they aren’t playing? the fans are 50/50 so no advantage there. the game comes down to who owns the LOS. we have to dominate there and we will.

Exactly, BR. For my money, the “mind game” stuff went away around 2010. We won three in a row from 2011-2013 because we had a better team. 2014, we did a face plant, 2015 and 2016 Florida had the better team.

We’re 3-3 in this decade and 4-6 over the last 10 years. By and large, the better team has won over that period. This year, we overwhelmingly have the better team and it will show this Saturday.

Kirby had the team as ready as they could be last year, but Florida’s defensive line just owned us, and nearly killed Eason. That’s not going to happen this year.

I hate to sound like an asshole, but I’m going to. This is why they hired her:

Right, I’m sure it couldn’t be because she’s extremely well qualified for the job. A black woman couldn’t possibly be hired on merit, only out of political reasons that stole the job from a more deserving white man.

Kirby was thrilled today that she is getting this opportunity. I am sure he is. There is some truth to that J Scott. It is the main point in every headline about her hiring. I don’t mind that being the lead but wouldn’t it be nice if she also had the other accolades that come with being a part of an elite overall athletic program. UGA under McGarity is not that nor is it headed in that direction. UVA is in my humble estimation an elite university. This has train wreck written all over it.

*At Georgia, Williams had a hand in virtually all aspects of managing the athletic department, including as a top administrator for both football and women’s basketball. Williams was an all-Southeastern Conference guard for the Bulldogs, playing from 1985 through 1989.

She has been at Georgia since 2004. Before coming back to work for her alma mater, Williams was associate director of athletics at Vanderbilt, where she oversaw 11 men’s and women’s sports.*

But sure, she only got the job because she’s a black woman.

If remember right, Spurrier did not treat it like a normal business trip. I’d have to think the mind trick Kirby is choosing has been tried a time or two or 20 in the last 27 years. I’d prefer to breed an attitude of disgust and superiority towards that team in Florida.

Conversely, I recently read Kirby praising the job Richt is doing at Miami…he said he noticed this when viewing Ga Tech film. Kirby doesn’t appear to be looking only at the day in front of him.

I think the “getting in the heads” meme is all about the fans, not the players. Most weren’t alive in the nineties when this all began in the Spurrier/Goff era. Our guys are fine, it is the fans who need to grow a pair.

But I am curious about no one being at UGA in 2013, we don’t have any players in their 5th year? Never would have thought that. Win Saturday, which I fully expect, and it will be 4-4 over the last eight years, and begin to start our own streak.

Kirby met with McGarity and the board for his interview and told them that he had the blueprint for winning from Alabama. It is very expensive and he must have total control of the program. Any objections and he would gladly go back to Tuscaloosa. The decision was theirs. UGA bought in and championships will follow.

I would love to get a defensive score or a special teams TD for a change. Our last special teams TD against Florida was Bobby Etter in 1964, for Pete’s sake! By contrast, UF has 3 special teams TDs in the past 6 games. Our last defensive TD in Jacksonville was in 1971 (we had a fumble return for a TD in Athens in 1995.) UF has had 8 defensive TDs from 1994 through now.
