Seth Emerson ($$) is reporting that Georgia and Texas are exploring the possibility of a home-and-home. A road trip to another iconic stadium? Be still, my heart.
There is a catch. The ‘Horns have home-and-homes scheduled throughout the next decade, so to add Georgia would mean making a decision to play more than one P5 non-conference opponent in a season or two. In this day and age, that’s a pretty big catch.
Still, a man can dream about another compelling excuse to visit Franklin Barbecue, can’t he?

UPDATE: More deets from the Texas side.
The Texas Longhorns are working on a home-and-home football series with national title runner-up Georgia in the next decade as well as another high-profile opponent, a source with knowledge of the situation told Horns247.
Currently, Texas has marquee non-conference opponents lined up through 2027. The source said a home-and-home with Georgia would be after that — most likely 2028 and 2029.
And, it sounds like they’re still asking what time it is in Texas.
Texas is 3-1 against Georgia but the two teams haven’t played since the Longhorns suffered a painful, 10-9 loss to the Bulldogs in the 1984 Cotton Bowl, which knocked UT out of contention for the 1983 national title.
Impossibly giddy over these. Please Baby Jesus make this a thing!!!!!!

I will find a way to go to Austin after kicking myself for not going to South Bend. Brisket, music and some good golf between Austin and San Antonio … I’m there.

Like I said to an earlier comment from another post…October 9 is a Saturday in 2021. Let’s play at Sanford then because it’s always 10/9 in Texas

It would be interesting to see if they would fall for that. I can’t remember if the Red River Shootout is the 1st or 2nd Saturday in October.

Thank you for using the proper title.
And please, ADs, make this happen! I believe Texas under Herman is about to move back up in the world and this would be a great home and home.

+1 This would be a home run, especially with the home and home, no MB/Jerry’s World trade off.

2nd that. There would be no greater neutral site abomination than Georgia and Texas. In fact, I think all the schools with iconic college towns should ban together and try and push this not-so-cute 10-12 year trend down the hatch. There are a couple neutral site games that should like permanently and they are all INTRA conference 100 yr old annual rivalries.

UT is a much better option than trotting in the Austin Peay’s of the world. If we’re being asked to pay hard earned cash we need to demand these type games.
And Austin is a great city to visit. For those looking to explore, go to The Salt Lick BBQ in Driftwood. Also, don’t miss the Driskill Hotel off 6th Street.

My first intro to BBQ out west, what the hell is this? Answer: beef. Me: Where the hell is the pork? Them: huh. Times have changed though, as there is some really good BBQ pork in Austin. And Mexican food to die for.

Would Texas fans be like ND? They decided they liked $$$ more than football and sold us their tickets.

Texas fans are a little more blase’ than I’ve seen other places. 100k of them, but pretty laid back, even when they were winning under Mack. I don’t know if that translates into selling tickets, but I think it might.

Darrell Royal Stadium now seats over 100K. Chances would be as good or better for a ticket.

It totally depends. They’re as fair-weathered as they come. If “Texas is Back!” (TM), then it’ll be a tough get; but if the Herman Era has come and gone, then it shouldn’t be a problem.
Also, LOL’d at “Do Texans like money?” That’s a riot.

Arizona State was a fun trip, but Notre Dame was the trip of a lifetime. Austin would be a great addition. I wish I would have made the trip to Boulder, but oh well.

The ridiculous part of all of this is there is the possibility that we make to Austin to play the Horns BEFORE we make it to College Station to play TAMU (2024) who will have been in the conference for a dozen years .

Georgia has to play another Power 5 out of conference team every year, Texas. Granted, it’s Georgia Tech, but still. Technically it’s still true.
Damn, I’d love to go out to Austin and play UT. Let’s make this happen, boys.
What time is it in Austin?

It’s still 10 to 9 our here!

Is a myth that all Power 5 teams are created equally, we get next to squat for playing GT. I know it isn’t going away but nationally this has become a noon, uninteresting game. Kirby knews we need another quality game every season to attain the level of national perception he wants for our program. We took a nice step forward last year with the ND game, give it up this year with a horrible OOC slate. Not to mention, Dawg fans deserve better than what is being offered up.

Correct. We get zero credit for playing them. We’ve all gone down this road a million times……..In my fantasy world, we drop their ass like 3rd period French. But, I’m not a state taxpayer or resident, so I will admit that I probably don’t “get it” like many Dawg fans. But I thought “conventional wisdom” says a rivalry worth keeping needs no explanation…….but I stand down. / Tony out.

We play Fech until the Drought is on the ash heap of college football history and they beg to end the series. If you don’t know about the Drought, look up Theron Sapp and why his jersey number is retired.

I hope home and home series makes a comeback. I think ND Vs UGA got a lot of attention last year and is helping the suits realize there’s value in those games. I would welcome a home and home with TX, not so much for Oregon (prefer MBS) but I am hoping both games happen.

Home and Homes are like going to a really nice totally local restaurant. Neutral site openers are Ruth’s Chris at best….. not bad, the stadium’s pretty swanky but it doesn’t have 6th street in Austin, downtown Athens or the Basilica of the Sacred Heart.

I figured UGA-Texas would happen sooner than later because both teams want to recruit in the others home state. UGA wants the exposure in TX (especially considering how infrequently we play A&M) and just about everybody is trying to recruit Georgia these days considering the number of D1 players coming out of the state these days. It makes sense to set up home and home series with Texas, UCLA (already scheduled) and other places that can reciprocate in terms of the quality of their home recruiting territory. This needs to be the last year we ever have 3 non-P5 teams on the non-conf schedule. At Florida, they got away with FSU and 3 cupcakes most years (Miami added occasionally), because of the quality of the P5 opponents. GT might have a team once every 15-20 years that approaches that level so we must have a 2nd P5 each year. In addition to Texas, Penn State would be another sensible home and home. Another Clemson home and home will get scheduled soon and I’d expect a UGA-Miami home and home or neutral site game at some point. Hopefully, Michigan too. Like I said, I don’t think this is too difficult of a job for McGarity because every school wants more exposure to the talent base in Georgia. Just depends on how aggressive he wants to get. No excuse at all for Austin Peay, MTSU, UMass and GT in the non-conf. Should NEVER happen again.

There’s no way our current AD will ever schedule a series with Miami while CMR is the head football coach in Coral Gables. In 2016 when the bowl projections were anticipating Dawgs-Canes, I believe McGarity came out and said that wouldn’t happen.

Maybe UGA-Miami just happens through a bowl pairing then, whether it’s a playoff matchup or somewhere like the Peach Bowl or Orange Bowl in a non-playoff year for those games. With both teams near the top of their conferences, it seems inevitable that the matchup will happen. Only took two seasons for UGA and Richt to get matched up with FSU in a bowl game.

I agree … I would like to see it in a big bowl game or CFP game. I just don’t see us interested in a regular season game with the U right now. Kirby probably doesn’t want it. McGarity definitely doesn’t want it. I doubt CMR really wants it.

I think everyone agrees with your prediction, doesn’t mean we like it, or understand it. There are great rivalries that ended way too soon, this is one that has outlived its usefulness, in many opinions (not enough). We have enough noon time slot games already, imo.

I understand, Mac. The Fech game isn’t the game it once was. As a Georgian, I would never want the series to end with the trade school having the longest win streak in the series. I want the series to end on our terms after we have beaten them 10 times in a row or they drop to a Group of 5 program, whichever comes first.

Whatever it takes, we just have so few opportunities to do a quality home and home with that anchor around our neck. I know I won’t live to see it but I always want something better for CFB, and especially all things UGA. My opinion is we are living in the past, watching B&W TV when OLED is available. When they left the SEC, their death spiral began, we don’t need to be in it with them. And I appreciate tradition in CFB, but they did this, not us. Recognize the other side’s points, but this isn’t Ou?Nebraska, or UT/A&M we are talking about here.

Wandered into a game in Austin one time a long time ago(early 80’s) Crowd seemed to be really drunk or the wind was blowing just right. Anyway, a large stadium, good venue, and Austin is a very nice city.
