The Kirby Smart coaching tree takes root.

And it took less than three seasons.

Sources have indicated to CUSportsNation.com and Rivals.com that Georgia defensive coordinator Mel Tucker will become Colorado’s next head coach, barring any unforeseen circumstances.

Tucker’s name picked up steam as this week continued, and CUSportsNation.com reported on Friday morning that Tucker had already interviewed for the CU opening. Tucker is coaching the Bulldogs against No. 1 Alabama in the SEC Championship game on Saturday, and we expect Colorado to make the news official in the next 24-48 hours.

I will be curious to see where Tucker’s replacement comes from.  Does Kirby promote from within, or is there someone outside he prefers?

In any event, congrats to Mel Tucker, who’s certainly earned his shot.

Wish him the best. Hope he doesn’t report to Boulder until January 8th.

Whoever replaces Tucker will have Kirby in his ear. My money’s on Schumann.

      I’m betting on Schu also.

The guy has only been an on field coach for 3 years and it’s not clear yet that he can recruit to his group. Is there a weaker group (in depth and talent) right now than ILB?

Not sold yet. Get Nakobe Dean on campus and get him and Tindall playing like R and then maybe after our next DC gets a HC shot we can move Glenn up.

Kirby has earned the benefit of the doubt at this point. If he thinks Schumann is ready, then tough for me to question it.

And btw talent is not an issue at ILB, it’s just young talent. And Monty Rice when healthy, is a damn good ILB. You could argue he’s done a great job of converting a RB to a solid ILB.

Glad for Tucker but will this news have any effect on Dean and others decision? We’re only two weeks out from the early signing period.

Please don’t let it be another assistant promoted for the wrong reason. #thirdandwillie

As a CU Buff alum and a lifelong Bulldogs supporter, I am happy for Coach Tucker. I hope he has a full grasp of what he is getting into with the challenges in Boulder and can lift the program back up. That is a tough place to recruit to and the athletic department does not have deep pockets. In state talent is limited so he will have to do well pulling kids from California and Texas. Getting kids from Texas seems more difficult now since CU has moved to the PAC 12 and now that the SEC is in Texas with the TAMU move from the Big XII.

Hopefully Coach Tucker will dominate the “Former UGA Assistant Coach Bowl!”

All the best to Uncle Mel. He has been my favorite of Kirby’s assistants.

Sucks losing Mel, but this is where you want to be as a program.

The good: we won’t go up against him on the field or in recruiting. The bad: we don’t need any distractions today, of all days.

This cuts both ways. If the kids like and respect him as much as most of us do they’ll play 60 minutes of ball to send him off on a positive note.

Absolutely. Piss poor timing, and a Busch-league move out of Colorado. Could have waited until tomorrow.

Exactly, isn’t like CU is in the middle of a recruiting crisis with top level recruits. Tomorrow would have been fine. I am much more concerned about who he might take with him during our recruiting battles. McGee comes to mind first. Have no worries that Kirby will have a shortage of solid candidates to replace Tucker. Who wouldn’t want to join a staff on a program who is going up like a missle. Even if he chooses Schumann, quality assistants will be standing in line.

I am sure that Kirby has a thick file in his desk drawer with coordinator candidates he wants. If he doesn’t, he’s not doing his job as head coach. I expect an outside hire. If Chaney retires I’d bet he tries to bring Bobo back. He’s the perfect man for the QB’s we have.

Not advocating this, but just a guess. I could see Schumann named DC and take over the DB’s, then Tyson Summers moved from analyst to LB coach. Kirby likes his own guys, and demands that the defense be implemented according to his template. What’s more likely is for Schumann to get the DC job and an experienced DB coach with proven recruiting chops is hired.
