The year of living happily

On a scale of one to ten — one being, say, the way you felt after the 2015 loss to Alabama and ten being the way you felt after the Rose Bowl win — how would you feel if all of AL.com’s five bold predictions about the 2019 season came to pass?

**********************************************************************

UPDATE:  Kirbs responds.

During his Wednesday appearance at the Regions Tradition in Birmingham, Kirby Smart was asked to share his reaction to that column while a guest on WJOX 94.5 FM radio show “The Roundtable.” His response didn’t disappoint.

“I’ll tell you what, that’s the only way we’ve been able to beat them so far,” Smart replied after losing to Alabama in consecutive seasons.

He then offered up his honest response to the article.

“Nah, I don’t get into the predictions,” Smart said. “I think they sell, I think it’s great for the media and it’s great for the offseason for everybody to talk about but our predictions are we’ve got to go practice, play good and get a good football team/product on the field. That’s what we are working on right now.”

9 if the Bammers sneak into the playoff and we have to beat them twice.

10 if they don’t make the playoffs.

I’m hoping the seccg is an elimination game if we win it, but not if we don’t.

Lulu and Junior at 9-3 would chap my ass and take the luster off of the rest, because we’d have to hear about how they are “back” and would be nashnul champeens the next year. If you flip Big Urnge to 3-9 it’d turn that frown upside down though.

Not sure why we care if UT goes 9-3…..

But I think that is the worst prediction in that article…

I was a student at UGA in the 90’s, I hate the hell out of Tennessee. When it comes to Tennessee, I am like Johnny Ringo from Tombstone, there is a big, empty hole right through the middle of me, and the Viles can never suck enough for me to fill it.

1: Yes it’s possible. With quality receiver play, Georgia could be better
2: Nowhere to go but up? But they did hire Jim “Goal Line” Chaney
3: Lamentations. Sack cloth and ashes are the uniform of the day for cock fans.
4: Kirby is on the mother
5: The Gus Bus is warming up for the trip to Mahlzania, the third world country Auburn is buying Gus to get rid of him.

He admits #1 isn’t so bold, with Tua and those receivers returning.

Anyone can see how brutal SC’s schedule is, but the prediction that Boom could get fired taking that schedule in consideration is pretty bold.

I think the UT SEC schedule is as hard as SC’s, so I think his UT prediction is bold but the most likely to be wrong.

The UGA championship is pretty bold for a writer for AL.com but isn’t that bold if we are who we think we are.

The Gus prediction sounds like wishful thinking.

I for one would lament the firing of Malzahn just as I celebrated his fully guaranteed 7 year deal. The longer he stays on the plains the better imo. Bama should feel the same.

And then Georgia vs. tOSU in the playoffs and crushes them. Not to belittle Fields but to affirm Fromm with a side benefit of Harbaugh still not winning the B10. Heh.

The SC and UT predictions tell you all you need to know about what the author thinks of both teams’ coaching staffs.

I’m obviously all about beating Bama, and his other predictions seem reasonable. HOWEVER, I hope Gus remains Auburn’s coach forever.

If things worked out that way it wouldn’t suck.

The Dawgs beating Bama, and SC & Auburn sucking makes for a 10. The only thing that tarnishes the 10 ranking is that UT is improved. I have enjoyed their struggles.
I would love to beat the Bama team that has the best offense in SEC history.
Also, if the statement, “…the 2018 Georgia team will be the worst one we will see for the next decade…”, comes true, my head would be in the clouds for many years.

I’m good with all of it except for Auburn making a coaching change. Lifetime contract for Gus, please.

I am so broken inside that Auburn going to seven and five would be the best part of that whole list.

Right now, I think we go 12-0, Bama 11-1. And based on absolutely nothing but my gut, heart, and uniform colors, I see the playoff as:

    #1 Georgia
    #2 Clemson
    #3 Oklahoma
    #4 Washington

I could be convinced that Penn State or Ohio State or Michigan or Oregon could be in at #4, but I think the B1G teams beat each other out and that the Huskies beat the Ducks to go undefeated.

I think the rankings will get jumbled so that UGA avoids OU in PHX, so I could just as well see it as #1 Clemson, #2 Georgia, #3 Washington, #4 OU.

All subject to change once Phil Steele comes out.

Understandable. I see it as, you know PSU is going to bork away at least one game they shouldn’t and that Michigan will lose on the road to someone (probably PSU) and I think this is the year Harbaugh gets OSU.

I don’t really care about the predictions about teams other than Georgia. In terms of the prediction related to Georgia: Winning the SEC is always incredibly awesome; I hope we never lose sight of that fact. And beating Alabama would be really exciting as well. But my favorite prediction that this writer makes is “the 2018 Georgia team will be the worst one we will see for the next decade”. That’s what I love hearing, that we will be a consistent SEC and national contender for years to come. I hope that prediction is right!

  16. All reasonable predictions. Agree with South Carolina and Auburn. Bama could be ‘that good’ on offense. The team that will surprise many on offense this year – The Dawgs.

Bama/GA – we’ll see. Depends on how healthy we stay a QB and RB. So deep everywhere else – we can absorb some hits, including receiver (I think we are deeper here than people realize).

UT – I’m not convinced. The team that is always over looked is Missouri. And I think you now have some bad blood between the coaching staff’s here after UT tried to take some players. Wouldn’t be surprised if Mizzou absolutely clocked this team this year. If this game were earlier in the year, I would call it out right and point to it as a game that flipped their season downward.

And look out for BYU – only their 2nd game of the season. They could get tripped up here.

I didn’t see many signs to suggest Tennessee can go 9-3. The Auburn game was their only impressive win last year, unless you count beating an utterly flat Kentucky team. If we assume Pruitt is a good head coach, then there would be some kind of year two bump. Thing is, that might simply get them to 7-5. Along with the three obvious losses in 2019, I would expect them to also lose to at least two of Mississippi State, Missouri, South Carolina, Kentucky and Vandy. None of those are outstanding teams, but there’s not much other than faith in the coaching to recommend Tennessee over any of them. Faith that at this point seems entirely unwarranted to me.

I don’t think UF is an obvious loss for UT. YMMV and apparently does.

You’re probably right. Florida had a fairly veteran team last year, especially on defense. They may really feel the bite of McElwain’s last couple of recruiting classes this year, though I still think Tennessee is facing an overall talent disadvantage against Florida.

9-3 assumes Tennessee wins every game they are in a Vol’s fan head should be favored against every year. Utk has tough run with a trip to the swamp, a bye week, UGA in Konxville. Miss St. at home and a trip to Bama. If they go 0-4 or even 1-3, can they rebound against SCar?

7-5 for Auburn assumes they drop every game to their big rivals (I don’t include Miss St and but I include A&M).

8-4 for both teams seems more plausible. Auburn is often dangerous coming off a down year. Tennessee has been predicted to have this break out year how many times of the past decade?

Don’t give a hoot in hell about any of the predictions except #4, and if #4 comes true I think we’ll be National By-God Champions.
