Back from the dead?

Who knows if it’ll last, but one nice thing about what’s gone down so far this season is that the hot preseason take that we’d all be just waiting for the inevitable Alabama-Clemson rematch for the natty has morphed into the general perception that at least five other teams have injected themselves into the national championship debate.

Which leads me to take the temperature about a subject I haven’t pursued in several seasons:  is there interest in resurrecting the Mumme Poll this season?

You may recall that I put the MP to bed after participation in it dwindled to fewer than two dozen folks.  I wouldn’t be interested in bringing it back unless than number jumped back up to around 100.

But I do notice there are a couple of new national fan polls making the rounds this year, although neither are based on the same guidelines as the Mumme Poll.  A brief refresher as to what those are:  in its last incarnation, we went to a purer approval voting approach.  Instead of selecting a specific number of teams, each voter was allowed to choose as many or as few teams as he or she thought deserved to be considered in the national conversation.  If you wanted to pick a top ten, fine.  If you simply wanted to fill out a national playoff bracket, cool.  If, like me, you only wanted to choose those teams you thought could win a national title, all good.

That made for the easiest, fastest ballot selection I ever went through.  My last ballot took less than 30 seconds to pick.

Anyway, I’m just asking if there’s enough interest from y’all to bring it back.  Let me know in the comments.  Remember, it doesn’t start until after six weeks of games have been played, which would mean after this week’s slate.

Selfishly, I think seeing a Mumme Poll and the resulting 138+ comments on a Thursday would add some “juice” to the weekend build up. Figure trash posters like myself would ruin it, lol.

I would have interest. This is a great season to do it with seemingly so many teams looking like they are playoff contenders.

Definitely. Loved the concept and have missed it. Never understood why participation would fall off once we lost a game and couldn’t finish first.

    • Briefly, the MP is based on approval voting. Rather than making everyone rank individual teams, voters simply select do this, as explained back in 2015:

No longer will you be asked to fill a ballot of a predetermined size. Instead, we’ll leave it up to you do decide how many teams you think are worthy of consideration, based on your own personal criteria. You think there’s only one team deserving of recognition? Fine. Want to stick to picking a four-team field for the semi-finals as the proper way to define the best? Works for us. You consider yourself a forward thinking person who would rather move ahead to the day when the postseason field is your perfect eight schools? Go, dog, go. Or do anything in between – I will, as I’ll test my theory that, at most, there are never more than four or five teams in a given season worthy of national title consideration.

It all works. We’re counting total approvals to rank teams, and that’s all we’ll do.

The only rule is don’t try to game the system.

I’ll probably give everyone Sunday and Monday to submit ballots and then I’ll tally them to post Tuesday or Wednesday each week.

Go for it, I’d much rather read your rankings than Finebaum’s or Kanell’s (I likely misspelled the 2nd one and I don’t care enough to have another Google result on his name)

Further LSU actually has a real shot at taking down Bama which I am not sure how I feel about as I want to play in the SECCG for the ticket to be the only SEC team in the playoff.

While we’re on rankings Clemson is taking a hit for yesterday but they won and have struggled in the past against mid tier ACC teams to go on to beat Bama. I am not getting worked up on where Bama, UGA, LSU or Clemson fall at the moment especially with the playoff in place. However, under the BCS there would be more pressure as rankings were more like a amusement park ride, you’re not moving up until someone is out of the line.
