Moar numbers

I went to call up the national yards per play rankings to point out that, for all the hullabaloo about LSU’s dynamic offense, Georgia actually has the higher average, but in the process, found Oklahoma’s ridiculous average:

If you’re a defensive coordinator and you manage to prevent the Sooners from gaining a first down on any given play, you’ve got yourself a win.  I know that’s not going to hold up over the course of a season — it won’t, right? — but even so, that’s insane.

Back to Georgia for a sec:  the total rushing yardage and the total passing yardage figures are within 11 yards of each other.  Balance achievement unlocked!

Sure seems like the only way to be called a “dynamic” offense is to throw the ball around constantly. Otherwise, you’re just a boring, impose-your-will team…

The Georgia offense can be really explosive. The question is whether Kirby is ever going to light the fuse. I think he does this Saturday just like every game so far (other than ND). Get a solid lead, play a lot of players, and win comfortably.

Everything is now leading up to the Cocktail Party, which is where I think Kirby lights the fuse for the November homestretch … at least that’s what I hope happens.

Honestly I think if we use the exact same scheme we used against ND, Tennessee will light the fuse for us.

Think you may be right about KS letting it go this weekend. We don’t have to against TN but I think he sees how other teams are getting more pub and respect because they question if UGA really has a dynamic group on offense. It might not matter to him but the players are getting put down because of lack of production numbers.

I may be wrong but he has had the week off to hear what is being said. Kirby is smart enough to know perception matters and UGA isn’t get the publicity others are. Recruits watch such things as well. I expect us to throw deeper passes on Saturday, Pruitt is going to stack the box, along with everyone else we have played, but think we take advantage of the weak safeties TN has.

      • Mac, I don’t think Kirby is going to turn them loose this weekend (I reread my comment and can see how you came to that conclusion). I think he’ll be happy with a 36-12 type of game where we get an early lead and let the air out of it over the course of the game.

I would like to see us take no prisoners and scorch the earth along the 10rc River.

The idea that Kirby has some grand scheme where he is sandbagging and is waiting for the magically ripe moment to light the fuse is a little bit of a stretch for me to buy. Maybe he does and he’s waiting to do it in Jax.

More likely, CKS is an overcautious game caller that occasionally makes an inexplicable, ill-timed move that is inconsistent with his own offensive scheme.
His scheme (or his OC’s) doesn’t match his talent roster.
He’s built a masterpiece of an offensive machine.
He knows that, but I’m not convinced his mindset ( In my defense I trust) is very flexible at crunch time.
The thing is; there doesn’t even need to be a “crunch time”.
Turn this offense loose and most games will be over at the Half.

Playing “defense first” and trying to eek out a narrow win is going to get Georgia run over (again) one of these days. (see last two games against Alabama)
I’m not bitching. Just because my post would be considered a negative comment doesn’t mean I’m down on the coach. He’s done a great job and I wouldn’t trade him for anyone right now. Undefeated is a great thing. If Georgia keeps winning and never goes HUNH again, or throws a deep ball, I’ll take it. I really think CKS is a game-day-coach- work in progress. Maybe he’ll open it up against the Hillbillies and pour a pour a quart of whoop-ass on Florida.

      • I think you’re being totally reasonable in that assessment.

It’s not that your comment can be viewed as negative. It’s that it ignores reality. Georgia has barely had any close wins to “eke out”. And they didn’t lose to Alabama because they were trying to “eke out” narrow wins. Alabama got stops and made enough plays to win the games (with some massive assistance from the officials in the national championship game).

I agree Bama made some stops but UGA helped by going republican in the second half of both games against them. Bama adjusted late and UGA did not only not ramp up their intensity to match, but played not to lose.

They didn’t in either game, really. I know I will never convince the gas pedal crowd of this, but the taking their foot off the gas narrative is simply not true.

Georgia can overpower most teams regardless of schemes.
It’s the ones that have a pulse that I think CKS tries to eek it out on.
Admittedly we have a small sample of those games to study and draw conclusions on. But of the games we do have, ND would be exhibit 1 in my contention.
No point is absolute and there are exceptions and instances we can both point too..and good enough. But my belief is that the offense is being bridled for no reason other than unfounded caution.
Agree that Georgia did beat Alabama in the NCS but the refs stole it. Get fair or even close to fair treatment in that game and the world’s a different place today.

I’m in Tulsa for a few months and get to watch them. It’s ridiculous how much time Hurts has to throw the ball. He could make lunch and eat it on every play.
Also, you would not believe how sour these folks are out here about the Rose Bowl. I wear a Mighty G shirt and the “Dagger in their eyes” look I get is crazy. Pure hatred. I’m talking about a severe emotional scar they are carrying here!

Tua has thrown for over 1000 yds more than Fromm. Think about that.

So, would the internet implode if the CFP playoff was Georgia vs aOSU and Bama vs OU?

Look at the number of plays we have run relative to the other top teams. That is another BIG surprise.

It’s pretty much in line with last year per game, with the first half of Notre Dame dragging the numbers down a smidge (66 vs. 63).
