“We won today. We’re fine.”

I saw D’Andre Swift’s reaction after he got blown up on a first down run late in the game, when Georgia was desperately trying to maintain possession of the ball to run out the clock.  I didn’t know the background story, though, until afterwards.

The CBS and Sanford Stadium cameras caught an awkward moment between Jake Fromm and D’Andre Swift Saturday night during Georgia’s 19-13 win over Texas A&M.

The Bulldogs were coming off a first-down run by Brian Herrien on a third-and-one play when Fromm let the play clock run down and handed off to Swift into the teeth of a Texas A&M blitz. The Aggies showed the blitz at the last second, knowing that the Bulldogs were trying to let as much time tick away as possible, and Swift loss two yards on the play.

The junior tailback sprung to his feet and had some words for Fromm, who never really pushed back as TAMU called a timeout with 2:43 left in the game and the two started walking toward the sideline.

After the game, Kirby Smart shed some light on the event and described it as something that would have been impossible to avoid considering the circumstances.

“I wouldn’t call it a dustup,” Smart said. “He was just frustrated. It was a situation where we don’t run that play into a pressure from that side. They did a good job disguising it. We told Jake to milk the clock and when you milk the clock you can’t change the play. You milk the clock, you’ve got to run the play. It wasn’t a great play, but that’s called passion, it’s not a dustup. It’s love. When you have family, your family doesn’t always get along, right? But they love each other. These two young men love each other as much as anybody.”

Had it been any other time in the game when UGA wasn’t trying to milk the clock, Fromm would probably been up to snap it sooner, had an opportunity to recognize the blitz and put Swift in a better situation. Instead, the play put the Bulldogs behind the chains.

“I think it’s just two competitors that want to compete and do the right thing for the offense,” Fromm said. “The clock is ticking, they showed a blitz there at the last second and I didn’t have enough time to change it. That’s part of the four-minute scenario, trying to milk out the clock and two guys want to be really competitive and win a football game.”

The “four-minute scenario”.  There’s your metaphor for this season’s Georgia offense.  Or, if you prefer, you can go with this one:

Simmons said Georgia offensive coordinator James Coley has been focusing the offense on third downs and red-zone touchdowns. Against Texas A&M, Georgia went 5-of-15 on third down, and it scored one touchdown in its three trips to the red zone. The other two were Rodrigo Blankenship field goal attempts.

“There’s always something you can improve on,” Simmons said. “We’re definitely getting to where we want to be. We just have to keep progressing.”

Keep?  When did they start?

Look, Jake and his receivers definitely had their share of execution issues, especially in the first half, when Fromm missed badly on a couple of key throws and one an early occasion when he threw a perfect slant (!), only to have it go right through the hands of the receiver.  But the coaching staff isn’t exactly doing him a lot of favors, either.

Watching Georgia’s offense was interesting because they used a minimal amount of creativity or modern concepts. They stayed in 11 personnel, didn’t put anyone in motion across the formation, no bootlegs or rollouts, a couple of quick throws, and didn’t run any RPOs with backside screens. They used the toss play away from A&M’s playside blitzes a few times but didn’t go to them consistently.

Time and time again, A&M didn’t have to do much but crowd the box and allow Georgia backs to come to them. Nothing came easy for the Bulldogs and while A&M had something to do with that Georgia really was their own worst enemy time and time again both in philosophy and execution.

Forget Attack the Day.  “Nothing comes easy” is this year’s mantra.  And it shouldn’t be; Georgia hits a couple of those near misses early on and yesterday’s game isn’t close.  Incapability isn’t an excuse, either, as Fromm nailed three beautiful passes on the Dawgs’ lone touchdown drive.

I’m beginning to wonder if there is so much confidence in the play of the defense that it robs the offense — coaches and players — of their edge.  Whatever the problem is, they’d better find an answer in a couple of weeks.  LSU has only failed to score at least 30 points once this season and has never been held below 23.  Georgia has failed to score more than 23 points five times already this season.  Something’s gotta give for Georgia to win another SEC title.

We’ve beat this horse and turned it into glue. It’s not going to get any better this year, it too late to close the barn door. Coley, whether by design, orders from Kirby or just being a lousy OC is not going to get us enough points in the SECC and while our Defense is magnificent they will need to get more turnovers and pick sixes than they have ever gotten if we are going to have a snowballs chance to beat LSU.

You’re high off your ass if you think anything about UGA–from the talent it brings in, along with the money it can pay, wouldn’t have OC’s salivating for this job. Maybe you think Kirby wouldn’t hire any of those great OCs–but that’s different from what you said above–you said “couldn’t” (as in Kirby couldn’t get a look, an interview), which is non-sense.

I happen to disagree. And I’ll trust the guy who’s about to be 33-3 over the last 3 regular seasons to make the right call.

Kirby said he was frustrated by our inability to finish and that the defense got tired in the 4th quarter. My response: Look in the mirror Kirby. This is what manball gets you. You want to put people away? You want your defense to be fresh in the 4th? Then run a modern offense and hire the best OC/QB coach money will buy.

Yesterday seemed more lack of execution than playcalling. The plays and space seemed there for the most part, particularly in the first half. Fromm was just inaccurate, and his receivers dropped balls (Jackson) or failed to lay out (Robertson). Fromm also failed to see wide open receivers (Cook). Jackson cut back a reverse where he had room on the outside. Those plays go differently and it loosens up a lot in the run game, but we can’t seem to get out of our own way.

We really need a cupcake to get some confidence before LSU.
It would be nice to think Kirby would air it out next week to get Jake and the recievers some confidence. However, it is most likely will will go up by 14 in the first half, and then try to milk the clock for 3 quarters.

I get your point. My problem is this is not a yesterday problem. And if the problem is execution, the OC has to make changes his team can execute. If you are a manager and you ask an employee to do a task and they don’t execute, you can either coach them up, reduce the task to one they can do, or move the employee.

I don’t disagree that execution is the responsibility of the OC. If Coley should be judged a failure, then its fair on that score. The offense has gotten worse and they have utterly failed to adjust to a defensive plan that has been the same since the second half of Vandy.

On a side note, maybe Fromm should get out of the IPF and try throwing on a rainy day.

On the bright side, I’m pretty sure Jake will be back for his senior season.

    • I can’t say I’d be surprised if LSU beats us 42-20. But I also won’t be surprised if we stick around, make it interesting and have a chance to win it at the end.

      Who knows?

I can remember a large/loud crowd of folks assuming we’d stand no chance against Bama in 17 and 18 and we actually looked like the better team for most of those two games.

      shrug

As so many others have already said, I’m just kind of resigned to the fate of the team – whatever it is – at this point because I know all my fretting isn’t going to change a thing.

I think we’re actually worse than our record so far and think the committee would be nuts to not drop us to #5 and move Bama up to #4 this week. But only time will tell.

On another note…. I do find it hard to watch the team. I mean, I’m celebrating every win, but I find the entire season so far rather joyless. I

But I think that’s a good thing. I wouldn’t want our team/staff to seem thrilled with what they’ve produced so far. I think Kirby really MEANS it when he says (every week) “We HAVE to get better.”

Kirby’s explanation of the Fromm/Swift dustup is total bullshit. He’s basically saying the Swift had absolutely no awareness of what was going on with that play. Swift didn’t know that Fromm was trying to milk the clock and could not change the play? That Fromm had absolutely no responsibility in the play being blown up? If Swift is that clueless about situational awareness maybe we have found one of the reasons why our offense is so fucked up. I don’t believe Swift is that clueless. Try again Kirby.

I… don’t think that’s what Kirby said exactly. He admitted Fromm didn’t have time to change the play and made a mistake running Swift directly into the blitz.

Bingo. We seem to expect a lot (too much, if you ask me) from these press conferences in the first place. And then we interpret coachspeak statements in ways that enable our frustrations, reinforce our preexisting views, etc.

I’d bet my last dollar that Georgia fans are the most miserable fan base with an 10-1 (about to be 11-1) team. We’ll see how this season finishes, but it might be the best three-year stretch in the recent history of Georgia football.

Ok, let’s look at what Kirby said “exactly”. “We told Jake to milk the clock and when you milk the clock you can’t change the play. You milk the clock, you’ve got to run the play.” Seems to me he’s saying Jake didn’t make a mistake, he had no choice but to run the play. I’m just asking if that is true, why did Swift get upset? It’s not a big deal, just didn’t make sense to me.

Think Swift just got emotional about the hit, and failure of the play. Not the norm for him, he jut forgot to factor out the clock being down to 1-3 seconds. Sure he regrets scene now, just as Jake regrets he was helpless to provide a change. Call that play earlier in the game, we check out of it. Looked bad, but I don’t think there is an issue/split between the players.

Coley will quietly be asked between the SEC Championship Game and our game in the Orange Bowl (while I believe our defense is good enough to keep LSU under 30, our offense is not good enough to score more than LSU, even given that) to find another job. He’ll find a soft landing spot on good buddy Jimbo Fisher’s staff. The move will be announced the week after we play the bowl game.

The same day or day after that announcement it will be announced that Mike Bobo is returning to Athens as OC and QB Coach.

In 2020, Jake Fromm will throw for over 3500 yards and 30 TDs. Zamir White will have 1500 yards. James Cook will have 1000 yards combined rushing and receiving. Pickens and Blaylock will both get 750 yards receiving, but because the offense is intelligently and imaginatively designed to get it to many different players, including the tight ends, they won’t hit 1000. FINALLY, Georgia will have an offense to go with the defense and truly be an actual challenger to win the who thing.

So let it be written. So let it be done.

With middling MWC talent, they’re far outpacing the Dawgs on plays of 50 yds or more. So he’d clearly be an improvement over Coley. But if you want a higher bar, I’d love it if they grabbed Kafka off Kansas City’s staff. Was a very good OC for Northwestern, and has spent the past few seasons working with the best offense in the pros.

I am just of the opinion what we don’t need is to try and relive “the glory days” of 2012-2014, with a DGD who has to be worn out after a difficult HC tenure. Let’s not forget he was sidelined with an undisclosed illness for much of last season. If the defense so knows what is coming – a run to the side Swift is on, a snap coming at the end of the play clock – so that it can shift in the last 5 seconds and get a TFL…

Then that’s a wasted and dangerous play. Worse than a kneel down because Swift getting blasted like that is a risk for both injury and a fumble.

Sometimes defenses guess right and win the play. That’s a given. But this is starting to remind me of 2017 Bama, when Calvin Ridley was visibly frustrated with the offense’s risk aversion. TAMU had safeties sprinting towards the line pre-snap, assuming run. Same thing we did to Hurts in the championship game in 2017, completely shutting that offense down in the first half and forcing a total change at halftime.

Bluto, to a certain extent, I think your old “crisis of faith” line is applicable with Fromm on the offense. But I feel like it’s mostly been the result of the design of the offense and playcalling. Fromm’s confidence is shot right now – both in himself and in his receivers. When you’re only given a few chances a game to really make plays, and you miss early on them, then you start to press on the few other opportunities that you have. Then you miss on those, and it goes from there. Jake doesn’t have the swagger he exuded for 2 years, it’s obvious. And I really believe it’s been created by the 20 yard box he’s had to operate in all year.

Of course there are other factors. The losses at WR are real and can’t be discounted. But the Jake we saw the last couple of years would have still made hay with those guys.

Wr require use of hands. Cager out hurts, Fromm being off hurts, and Coley and Kirby are less than imaginative, but our wideouts don’t have the best fundamentals either. It’s a team effort. Hopefully a drubbing of the cupcake next week will get everyone some confidence to get on track prior to the Bengals.

As great as the defense, particularly vs the run has been, the secondary does worry me (especially with Campbell still recovering from turf toe and Stokes leaving yesterday with an injury). Mond and Book are the best 2 QBs the defense faced, both hit 275 passing, with no real run help. It’s not a stretch to say Burrow and LSU’s run game are a bit better than both.

I think the “Kirby is in denial” and the “Coley is running what he wants” are a bit of a stretch.
Think back to how crappy the offense was in 2016. Chaney clearly got put on a short leash after that, and the mandate was to get the offense better. So the fullback pretty much disappeared, RPOs showed up more, and that plus a better o-line made a far better offense.
So I don’t think his platonic ideal is “hold the ball 42 minutes, score 25-ish points, and let the defense sit on them” — plus he has criticized the output of the offense (about as much as he can, as he’s not going to throw any coaches or players under the bus now.)

Something died in this offensive system after Jake hit that marvelous pass to Riley Ridley in the 3rd quarter against Bama. The abysmal showing against Texas bothered me all year and handicapped my outlook for the team this season. Everyone knows what they have to do to stop this offense because they know the odds are very low that it can make them pay for jamming the wrs in man coverage and stacking the box. If the offense is this poor with Jake always getting into the right play what would it look like with a less cerebral qb? Everyone always says that we need better players. I don’t know you improve on the players when every OL, rb, qb (maybe) and 2 or 3 wrs on this roster will play in the NFL. Nevertheless, UGA is always a player short.

          Illini I think you’re my spirit animal…
If I can find a way to post the pic I will, but I outfitted my mountain bike with rod holders and baskets. I did some work for UGA on Sapelo island once upon a time. I brought the bike to get around the island I fed the whole crew with two rods and a cast net for days.
Mullet is great fried right out of the water, wading out to an oyster bar with two beers and a bottle of hot sauce is THE best way to eat oysters.

I almost killed myself the first morning at Sapelo last year. I got up before sunrise and rode on of those clunkers from the Plantation down to the water with a rod in one hand and my stuff in a pack. When I rode back in daylight I couldn’t believe I didn’t crash in one of those huge potholes. Here’s a sunrise shot from that morning.

I was there with a group and the Gullah ladies made dinner the last night. Mullet, shrimp, grits. . .awesome!

We were there for 12-14 days at a time off and on for a year or so. What a fantastic place.
FYI, if there is a 3 legged alligator in the road? Don’t poke him with a 4′ piece of conduit to get him to move. “IF HE’D A HAD 4 LEGS YOU’D ONLY HAVE ONE!” was my drunk helper yelling out of the passenger window. I had made it up the hood to the top of the truck by then…

Can you still find matching pairs of “angel wings” clam shells on Sapelo? While going down to the beach after dark, found a Whippoorwill snuggled down in the mid-road (trail?) grass. Saw it’s eyes first. It’s the only place I’ve seen a night heron – in the daytime on an inland pond.

                  Sapelo is special that way.

One of my favorite places on earth is Sunglow Pier. It’s Daytona beach shores. You can drive your shit on the beach, stay all day, and there isn’t much more to it than that.

Love it. We still have a chance, we have a great team, great D, and an offense that “could” bust out at any moment. I’m not saying we have confidence, but we have more than we’ve had in a great many years.
