The year of living sadly

The Associated Press looks at Florida’s season through the midpoint and isn’t impressed.

MOST DISAPPOINTING TEAM

Florida: The Gators, 13th in the final AP poll of last season, are unranked after last week’s 49-42 loss at LSU. At 2-3 in SEC play, Florida is also virtually eliminated from the race for the East title, which they won last season for a record-extending 13th time. Also receiving votes: LSU

HOTTEST SEAT

Mullen: The fourth-year Florida coach’s struggles against LSU both this season and last might be the biggest reason for the heat. Florida was heavily favored in both games, making the losses to a historical rival that much less palatable to the Gators’ faithful. Despite last year’s progress, the Gators don’t appear close to contending for their first College Football Playoff bid since the four-team format’s inception in the 2014 season.

I guess being the Portal Master™ doesn’t carry the cachet it once had.

There’s also a conversation to be had about why Florida was “heavily favored” to beat LSU. I don’t know why they should have been.

Don’t you know – the Gators are coached by the greatest football mind in all of football – therefor they should be the favorite in all games.

  3. This is real rat poison.

Dawgs, please don’t read any of the poison that will be coming out over the next 7 days. Go to Jacksonville with the intent of destroying anything wearing an orange helmet. No mercy, leave no doubt and no moral victories for the Handbags.

I always get a chuckle when the amazingness of last year is invoked, with that whopper of an 8-4 record.

Following up on the entry into the conference of OK and Texas discussed in the thread above, can you imagine the effect on FU of moving Bama and Auburn into the SEC East? As stated in the quoted article, FU has won the Division a record 13 times. Having to contend with both Bama and Georgia plus the occasional upstart Auburn, FU will probably never win a division title (much less the SEC) again.

If Ed Ogeron is fired one and a half seasons after winning, how long does Mullen get for the greatest 8-4 season ever?

It’s funny how quickly Mullen’s rep fell apart. It was less than a year ago that Florida was 8-1 with their big win over Georgia, ranked 6th and would get a shot at Alabama for the SEC and a playoff spot. All they had to do was beat a listless 4-5 LSU team. And now he’s coaching a lost season where they have nothing to play for but spoiler while his seat warms up.

Mullen’s super overrated as a head coach, but he’s still a good offensive coach when he has good players. For whatever reason, he’s decided that it’s more important to understand his entire offense than to be effective at what your quarterback can run. If he finally starts Richardson, then they’ll be a real test for our defense. He’s dangerous. I think we’ll win but strange things can happen by the St. John’s River.

I’m shocked they would criticize Mullen! This is the guy who kept his team from getting blown out by bama just weeks ago!

Whatever happened to those magical moral victories for keeping the score closer than expected? You just can’t measure intangible pleasures like that if you’re concentrating strictly on wins and loses. Those fu fans are ingrates!

Now that Dan’s seat is getting legitimately warm, we really need the Gators to start believing their preseason talking points again.

Happy to rehash for their benefit, wouldn’t want them to do something rash like get rid of Danny boy.

Mullen is an offensive genius (evaluation and hiring of defensive coordinators…..not so much. also ignore the fact that until last year Dan mullen as a head coach had never scored more than 20 points against a Kirby coached defense)

Mullen does more with less as opposed to Kirby (because Mullen sucks at recruiting)

Mullen is a better game day coach and better at X’s and O’s (Kirby must be A LOT better on the non game days because that’s the only plausible reason he’s 3-1 head to head and has more wins against top 25 teams, Division titles, conference titles and CFP appearances)

He’s a quarterback whisperer (who apparently is such a great QB developer he consistently starts the less talented guy while the better QB sits on the bench: Franks / Trask, Jones / Richardson)

Am I missing anything here guys? We need to remind those guys in Gainesville that they have the best coach, well like ever. All we have is some idiot alum who’s only strength is recruiting.

There are rivers of salty gator tears flowing this year. ALMOST enough to quench the thirst of every thirsty DAWG, but I would much rather over indulge than just have my thirst quenched.
