Did Dan Mullen cancel his subscription to The Athletic?

Because he got reamed harder there yesterday than the most brutal take down at a Georgia football fan message board you might read.

First, Ari Wasserman ($$) took notice of Mullen’s comment about not discussing recruiting at yesterday’s presser.

Some will say Mullen was in a bad mood and got caught with the Monday blues. But at a college football powerhouse — one that expects to be winning the SEC and national titles — there are no bad days. Recruiting is life.

“Mullen is an embarrassment to the recruiting profession,” a Power 5 recruiting staffer with deep knowledge of the SEC told The Athletic on Monday afternoon. “Mullen has shown a propensity to be clueless with why recruiting is so important, and this just adds to what is already known out there: He doesn’t get it. By ‘it,’ I mean he doesn’t understand what it takes to be an elite program. Kirby was 100 percent correct.”

Notice how the recruiting staffer said “the recruiting profession.” That’s what coaching is in 2021. It’s recruiting and then coaching. Without recruiting, as Smart said, it doesn’t matter how good of a coach you are. You’re never winning a national title because you’re an X’s and O’s guru.

This, of course, only comes as a shock to your average Daily Gator whose been insisting for years that he wouldn’t trade coaches with Georgia.

But the real pièce de résistance comes from this brutal takedown at the hands of Bruce Feldman and Allen Taylor ($$).  The quotes are so rough you’d think Tommy Tuberville was still coaching at Auburn.  A sample:

“Florida, they just don’t play hard,” said an SEC East coach. “… You watch UF on tape. They’ve got skill but they’re not physical.”

“They play with zero discipline,” said one SEC offensive coach whose team faced the Gators this season. “They don’t play hard.”

“We were more physical and much better than them in the box,” said another SEC offensive coach. “We were mauling them.”

“We thought going in that it was going to be one of the best defenses we faced,” said an SEC offensive coach. “But they just weren’t physical. They don’t look motivated. Not fired up. No juice.”

“Last year, we thought these guys were soft on the O-line but they had skill guys — (Kyle) Pitts and (Kadarius) Toney and weapons. We thought they were more physical up front, but then you play them and they’re just not a tough team. They just don’t finish. They don’t strain.”

Which is worse, no juice or fake juice?  Eh, I digress, probably.  There’s definitely a common theme through those quotes.  The new Florida Standard.

Anyway, here’s the quote that should serve as Mullen’s epigraph, if that day ever comes:

“Georgia is trying to take your soul the way they play the game,” said one of the SEC East coaches. “That’s not how Florida plays.”

It looks like Dan’s gonna need a bigger transfer portal.

  1. Let me venture a guess here:

    Coach 1: Beamer
    Coach 2: Someone at Kentucky
    Coach 3: Someone at LSU
    Coach 4: Back to Kentucky

Sometimes you need someone willing to write some good words for you to smooth things over. If you treat people like crap, no one is coming to the rescue.

      • Gatriguy, you hit the nail on the head. What’s really blown me away, as I’ve read these kinds of articles the past couple days, is how little respect the rest of the coaching profession (in the SEC at least) appears to have for Mullen. It’s not so much about what these coaches are criticizing but the tone they’re using. As much as SEC coaches surely despise Saban for beating them all the time, you’d NEVER hear them talking about him or one of his teams this way. Ditto Kirby, probably, nor even guys like Pittman or Stoops (whose programs aren’t exactly juggernauts but who make the most of the talent they have and conduct themselves with integrity).

Mullen, though, has pissed more than just UGA fans off with the way he’s run his mouth. And now that it’s becoming clear that that mouth was writing checks his team couldn’t cash, his fellow coaches are expressing how they really feel about the guy, with no punches pulled. Your program can get by if its coach isn’t feared necessarily, but if he’s not even respected, you’re in a tailspin it’s hard to pull out of.

        • Godfrey shits all over Mullen ever chance he gets. I think a lot of the dislike in the coaching community stems from the Leo Lewis situation, both for being a snitch, and also for hanging one of his own players out to dry like that.

A few years back in mullen florida year one or two, one ananymous sec coach said Mullen was really smart. They said the problem is that he wants everyone to know how smart he is and he overreaches with his plan trying to show everyone he’s so smart and it backfires on him.

Personally, I think part of the disrespect is rooted in that most of these guys know the potential of the Florida job. They know that a Florida team that is bringing in good to great recruiting classes and developing them to its full potential should be a juggernaut. PLUS all of these coaches are aware that FSU & Miami are not operating anywhere close to their full potential either.

Mullen, with his SEC experience and his prior connections at Florida, should have a juggernaut at his disposal each week. These guys know that it is not anywhere close to where it should be.

    • Staples did the same thing in an article today, basically saying that if Mullen doesn’t like the pressure of having to recruit and play to win national championships, perhaps he should consider a school where that is not the standard….like Chip Kelly did at UCLA.

One thing I was really looking forward to was watching their #1 quit on plays and take plays off. I laughed when he gave up pursuit of Stet in the backfield in the first quarter and Stet when for 20. Laughed, I tell you. Cox defines the difference between Georgia and Florida right now: at UGA you are going to work, compete, and fight; at UF, you can take it easy and rest on your laurels. Only, there are no laurels at the end of the race.

You may be a 5 star, but at UGA there is another 5 star (or at least very high 4 star) right behind you wanting to take your job. He’s motivated because he has the same behind him. At FU, You are a 4 star with a 2 maybe 3 star behind you trying to push that Dopey Dan is going to coach up.

“The part that hit me hardest was in the comments with UGA fans wanting Mullen to stay forever. That comment finally pushed me over the edge to say Mullen has to go. While I think we get some staff changes, we don’t get the level of turnover we need and I’m not confident we get replacements that will matter.

After that Bama game they had other famous one liners like: Mullen is the smartest coach in America, Worlds best play caller, An offensive Genius.

There is probably some dope that was even working on putting Mullen on the cover of Time magazine as the greatest person on the planet…

    • Kind of going along with that quote….

I think I said this before a while back in a comment, but I’ll say it again…

There seems to be no argument out there that Georgia is not the number one team in the land. But in my mind the proof of their greatness so far is not in their record or statistics but simply because if you polled all FBS coaches — and IF they had to answer this question truthfully: “Which team would you least like to face in a CFP game?” I think Georgia would be unanimous at this point.

And I have to admit there is something satisfying that Georgia is intimidating coaches through defensive play more than anything. The old maxim “defense wins championships” may not necessarily be true any more as far as it goes. But “a soul-stealing defense wins championships” may be….. time will tell.

I wish you all would leave Dan Mullen alone. He is probably the most misunderstood coach in America. The man is a football guru, and should have a massive contract extension and buy out. Florida can’t afford to lose this national treasure to the NFL. I look forward to CKS coaching against him for many years to come.

The Athletic pieces have been absolutely brutal. I have no love for the gators, but Feldman and Taylor’s piece where they provided endless quotes from anonymous coaches criticizing Florida would have to be the most difficult thing Mullen has ever read in his life. I can’t imagine reading the opinion of your peers publicly like that. Absolutely brutal.

The media has been such a shit show on Mullen from the beginning. They deserve as much blame as he does, maybe more. They maintained the bizarre narrative that he was some kind of magical coach that could transcend all other aspects of the HC job by simply calling “great plays” and performing player development alchemy with low-rated players. It was always pure fantasy with no support at all in terms of on-field results.

The talent gap didn’t happen overnight in Jacksonville. This has been 3+ years in the making. Mullen never replaced the talent he was handed from McElwain. The time bomb has been there for a while. This week the media decided to finally let it explode, and there is nothing else newsworthy right now to distract from it.

I’ve wondered all this time how Urban Meyer missed on Scam Newton and played Tebow instead. It was Mullen who missed. At some point early, Tebow and Newton were compared with each other and somebody said Tim was the better qb. Anybody still believe that?

    Liked by 1 person

    • miltondawg

I get your point, but I don’t think that from a college QB perspective it is outright clear that Cam was better than Tebow. As much as it pains me to say it, Tebow was an incredible college QB with numerous NCAA records, a Heisman, a natty, back to back Maxwell Awards (first time that happened), etc. I would go so far as to say that if I had the choice between dirtbag, pouting, front-runner Cam and Tim I would have taken Tim every day.

      Liked by 1 person

      • sniffer

I agree about Tebow. But as incoming freshmen, no one could have predicted Tebow’s trajectory. Or Newton’s , for that matter. I don’t think Tim would have out-shown Newton at any point in their first year. Sure, big heart and great leader. But the physical attributes Newton brought were far greater than Tebow’s at any time in their presence of Mullen.

Cam was full of himself and a discipline problem (even by Meyer’s standards) the moment he hit Hogstown. The players didn’t like him and didn’t try to get him off the hook for the computer thing. They didn’t care if you threatened your girlfriend, killed people or whatever. the unpardonable sin was to not ball out.

Taking Brenton Cox after he quit UGA and thinking he was going to be a world beater tells you all you need to know about the mentality of the gator program. He half asses it in everything except pass rush (which he half asses if he doesn’t immediately get to the qb). They so deserve each other.

Yup…. After all those a$$ whooping in the 90’s, the shoe is finally on the other foot and instantaneous. Have thoroughly enjoyed reading the UF meltdown. Kirby has gone from a goof that can only recruit and can’t coach to a relentless recruiter, who is clearly developing talent and with a top notch coaching staff almost overnight in Gainesville… And Mullen has gone from the closest to Spurrier that they could get to dopey dan inside of a couple of weeks.

Enjoyed every second of it… Karma baby… Karma…

Why don’t want Cousin Eddie to get fired… ever!!!

I mean, we know it’s gonna happen, probably after next season, but we definitely don’t want the pressure to ratchet up so much and the obvious to be stated so clearly to make people with power in Floriduh really start to think about things!

I think it is wonderful. If Grantham and the defensive staff are the sacrificial lambs after this season and Mullen is on the hot seat next season, that just ensures further chaos and turmoil in Gainesville for 2022 and at least into 2023 and probably 2024 and 2025. Another ho-hum recruiting class this year (in comparison with other SEC teams), and if the UF job becomes open after the 2022 season (and the ensuing likely mediocre recruiting class next year as well), the UF job is much more of a rebuilding job than when Kirby came to Athens. From a long-game perspective, I love that people are now openly talking about this stuff. Keep hurting UF’s recruiting classes and things get that much more difficult for them for the next four or five years.

Regarding the importance of recruiting – Nick Saban said once that when he had his interview with Mal Moore for the Alabama job, Saban said: Just remember I’m not worth a durn without good players. Moore wisely replied: That’s what I was hoping you’d say.
Regarding Florida players not playing hard: Mullen cannot deal with adversity; he’s gone into depression. Result: he’s lost the team; they don’t care anymore.

I spent 12 years as a director in the entertainment industry before moving on to other ventures. 70% of producing a good production is casting. Recruiting in football is similar to casting (or hiring in general). A director like a coach can compensate for some shortcomings; but you can’t compensate for talent. Inferior talent will give you an inferior production. Inferior recruiting will give you an inferior product on the field. If that is a concept that you’re unwilling or unable to recognize, then you shouldn’t be in any kind of management position..

I think Mullen has just kind of gotten lazy. I think he used to be a much better coach than he is right now.

We tend to think of people as static, as if they’re a known quantity forever. It leads to stupid conversations where Side A says, “This dude’s is a great coach because of what he did 15 years ago (or last year?)!” And Side B responds with something like, “No, the dude has always sucked — just look at what he’s done (or failed to do) this year!”

Maybe both sides are wrong. Maybe the dude used to be great, but once he reached the pinnacle (an HC position at a major P5 program) he just started to coast?

He caught lightning in a bottle in 2014, still didn’t win the west and got beaten soundly by Fish Fry. I wanted him nowhere near the controls of the Georgia program when CMR was let go in 2015. Kirby pulled his pants down in 2017 in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score indicated. Still remember Trask never sees the field while in Hogtown if Franks doesn’t get hurt.

He’s overrated and I hope Scott Stricklin has Mississippi State expectations for the Hogtown Handbags for a long time.
