There are reasons I stay ’til the end of every game. This is one of them:

4th & Goal at UGA 1
(0:03 – 4th) Tyler Macon pass incomplete to Daniel Parker Jr.
You know the head coach loved it, too.
Final defensive sequence to get goal-line stop…
“They didn’t come to me; I think they know the answer to that. They did cheer on those other guys and in the huddle they really encouraged them. They take so much pride in keeping the scoring down. I thought the guys were over there coaching them, going over the nuggets, the red area, things we go over on Wednesdays. We go over red Area for 15, 20 minutes and concepts. And we rep everybody in practice. So those guys got quality reps and they did a heck of a job.”
Kirby had a grin on his face shortly after when he went out to greet Drinkwitz after the game. You didn’t need to have a keen insight into the human condition to know why.

Their receiver -Dove? Made some incredible catches to get them down there to the goal line.

They actually had less than 100 yards passing until those two catches. They picked on Lassiter, but like you said, Dove went up and got those balls.

You gotta love the buy in from everyone on the defense. It’s personal for everyone on the field not to let their guys down and do their job right. It’s a coaches dream to have that level of commitment from such talented players.

Yeah, I really enjoyed Travon Walker going out and talking to the defense during the timeout before the 4th down play, then being there to greet them coming off.

There have been 3 horns that sounded to end games since the uk last td against UGA. Kentucky has been on the wrong side of all 3. Maybe karma laid the points and is now repaying the coach that would stoops so low as to beat the spread.

One of my favorite parts of the game. I’m actually glad Mizzou took the TOs so we could have that moment. And I hope if we’re ever in that situation Kirby taking all the TOs he has. It’s coaching moments on both sides of the ball.

I always stay the whole game (I pay for those tickets!) and that was effing awesome.
Almost as awesome as the tall, curvy, smokeshow blonde in a black jacket, a UGA halter top, and painted-on bell-bottomed jeans who spent every commercial break dancing and wiggling around. I’ve never been less annoyed at Red Hat Guy in my life.

I have to say I was a little surprised that when he called that last time out, Kirby did not put the starters back in for the last play to make a statement.

The final goal line stand was great. But not as great as the one we blew on offense when Kirby got a little too close to the ref’s mic.

I’ve seen that reported as Kirby cursing at an official, which it wasn’t, and I really wish people were more responsible, if not, more accurate with their reporting.

What I heard was “Throw the f@$&#ng ball.” Was after the third down when Stetson held it forever and I’m pretty sure Kirby wasn’t yelling that at the ref. The hot mike was pretty funny though.

Of course CKS loved it. He was fine with during the UK game and loved the effort even though UK scored. He wanted to keep UF out of the end zone and loved how our offense responded after the late touchdown the Gators recorded. He loved it on Saturday too.
CKS loves it that guys wearing the UGA uniform refuse to take plays off no matter where they sit on the current depth chart. He loves it when the experienced players stay in the game, encourage the younger guys and everyone takes pride in the effort.
CKS is very aware that we have not had many 4 quarter games in 2021 and it is important that we are sharp when we do have one. CKS knows that it is possible that there may be a situation where one of these young guys need to come into a game when the score is much close and make a play to help UGA win. CKS wants us playing to a successful standard no matter the situation.

We stay until the end too. I never have understood leaving early to beat traffic and missing a single minute of the game. Great goal line stand.

Haven’t been physically present in a while, but when I did go, I stayed until the band stopped playing. By that time, traffic isn’t any worse than it would have been otherwise.

Just curious, where do y’all live? I have to drive back to northern Floyd County after games, and it’s a hard slog down 316, across the Top End, then up I-75 after every game. I hardly ever make it in less than 3 hours. So, I gotta admit, I do leave early. Stayed until our last score yesterday, though.

Well, I admit I never had to do that. Having to go through Atlanta traffic is terrible, and I am not an Atlanta hater like some. I had to go through Atlanta frequently on Friday afternoon when my dad lived near Nashville. The top end of I-285 is brutal. I sought alternatives. Back roads are worse, unless you know there is a wreck or something on 285. Nothing is good, but I found that what worked for me best was to get to I-20 (from Athens, either 441 or 78 to 138) then go past the 285 junction and get 75 in the middle of the city. I don’t know if it was actually quicker, but I moved more, and idled less, and it was less aggravating. It’s been about 20 years since I had to do that, though.

I can not overstate how incredible it is that this team has allowed so few scores, so few explosive plays. I don’t mean from a “what an impressively talented bunch of world-beaters” sense… I think most would agree that the recruiting year-in and year-out has led us to this point. I’m talking more about the (so far) apparent lack of simple misfortune that so often results in scores.
A corner slips and a receiver turns a quick out into a long TD.
A timely screen beats a rare blitz and goes to the house.
Two pursuing defenders knock each other off a tackle, and the runner gets loose.
These are things that happen and result in scores that can make a difference in not only the final score, but in game flow. Part of what Georgia’s Defense brings into the game is mystique. Look at the 4th and Goal against Mizzou. It was wide open. The misfire is fairly inexplicable… but SOMETHING caused that incompletion. Subpar competition? Certainly possible… but could also be the moment of “oh my God, I’m actually gonna do this – I’m gonna … shit.”
That mystique exists because yes, UGA is very talented and plays solid, sound football… and because, honestly, UGA has been fortunate. The teams that have played us have had timely drops and mistakes that have helped to build the legend. Have they had more of those than they do against other teams? Have they had more than UGA’s own offense has suffered? I really can’t say. What I can say, is that our defense is good enough to make teams pay for not taking advantage of opportunities.
Mizzou had that 4th down. They had the play where the QB/RB missed their assignment, resulting in a big loss (shades of Bennett V FL, but Bennett turned the play around). Kentucky got punched off the field on drops. Arkansas had big drops and big penatlies. If those plays go a different way, the game feels different. The offenses have more success, and are able to believe in themselves… and then the mystique of the UGA D doesn’t weigh on their minds as much, and better plays start to happen.
I say all that to say this: don’t get caught in the belief that the Dawgs D can’t be beat. It doesn’t take much to give up a touchdown. It takes a safety slipping, or a mis-timed playcall. It takes a ticky-tack PI that extends a drive, or a tipped-pass falling into the hands of a passing receiver. Now, can a team get enough of those plays to outpace the offense on a given day? I don’t know.
I know this… our Defense will remain talented. They will be coached well. They will give great effort. Will they remain supremely fortunate? I suppose only time will tell.
But damnit, I’m gonna have a blast watching it play out.

Everything you say about what can happen is true, and much of it has happened this year. But there are a couple of things that stand out about this defense. First, this defense doesn’t just defend, it scores. Maybe there was a game where we didn’t get a pick-six, or a safety, or recover a fumble and run it in, but I can’t remember one right now. Second, when watching a game, if we have a defender out of position on a play, it is noticeable because it is that rare. Yes, we are lucky, and yes, bad things can happen, but luck is also the residue of design.
