Mr. Conventional Wisdom is here to help.
Some of us figured it out before Week 11, but I guess Tony wanted to be really, really sure before he went out on that particular limb.
Mr. Conventional Wisdom is here to help.
What we learned Week 11: There is something very, very wrong at Florida. That's obvious. The question is: Will Dan Mullen be the guy who fixes it?
Also: The debate about Georgia QB Stetson Bennett is over. Actually it's been over for a while. https://t.co/YwC8HQSoWK— Tony Barnhart (@MrCFB) November 15, 2021

As much as I dislike Dan MuLLLLen, it would be an absolute tragedy if FU were to fire him after the season.
We need the opportunity to add another “L” to his name before he goes!

You can add another L…FU currently has 5 losses, but I agree I hope FU keeps him for another decade

The 4 Ls are about the losses MuLLLLet has to Kirby since 2017.

Yeah, watching the Gators this season, I’ve gone from unadulterated schadenfreude to “oh crap we’ve lost Grantham and they might actually fire Mullen too!!!” Not that the Gator misery doesn’t still bring enjoyment just that I’d really like gator nation to start believing their preseason talking points (Mullen is a quarterback whisperer, obviously a better coach than Kirby, etc.) like, now. Still kinda amazing Danny boy went from greatest moral victory ever to the hot seat in basically a month.

People get attached to their writers, whom they feel express not only their thoughts on the subject at hand but reflect their values as well. See, e.g., my Dad and Tom Brokaw. They are like a comfortable pairs of slippers and, let’s be honest guys, people who read and contribute here are in the top 1% in terms of knowledgeable consumer of Georgia punditry. My Dad is a Georgia fan but he reads at a MCW level on that topic – he’s got other things he’s more interested in. There will always be a place for this guy in the sportswriting landscape. Chris Berman, anyone?
Furman Bisher and Lewis Grizzard come along only so often. And even Furman mailed one or two in near the end. Grizzard? Never.

Well, again, this seems to dismiss the fact that Barnhart used to be a lot better at this. It takes effort and it takes being willing to piss off the people upon whom you depend for access. Well, when you get older it’s easier to just phone it in and stop making people mad and use the access that provides you. And that’s how you become Mr. Conventional Wisdom. It wasn’t always that way.
Unfortunately for Lewis, he wasn’t afforded the opportunity to get old enough where laziness becomes tempting.

Actually, I think it reflects that all journolism is essentially becoming “access” journolism, so the only barbs to fire are at those without “hand”….

Grizzard was old before his time. I miss that guy.

Also, that’s kind of my point too. Journalists age too. I remember when my dad would die on any hill. Didn’t care what anyone thought. Then he just…mellowed. I think some journalists go through the same process. But in this era, it’s just so obvious when the profession has passed them by. It’s sad. The difference between MCW and the common cold (or herpes, lol) is I’m glad he exists. I’m just glad I’m not infected by him.

Mea culpa, I was in the group text from the upper deck of Kneeland Stadium after our first punt calling for JT (albeit, respectfully of Bennett). But Stetson knocked out the last of my lack of faith from there on in. He’s good enough to get done what we need him to get done. He’s more than good enough, actually. And we’ve got an incredible insurance policy, too, so let’s go.

Our seats were definitely in the sun which made it uncomfortable to be wearing so many layers. Then the sun ducked behind the sky box and sweat turned to frost. Thankfully, I was heated by hate and made it back to the ground and the car eventually.

Tony appears like the common cold, or a seasonal allergy, due to show up every now h then, not useful but annoying, and only time will make it go a way.

Please give him one more year this is just toooo much fun! Seeing that fla halftime score on the Neyland Stadium board was priceless! Can someone less tech challenged than me please post the “wake surfing video” again? It is so classic MuLLLen thinking he is recruiting!!!

Dan Mullen built what reputation he had on the backs of Prescott, Tebow, and Trask. I would be considered a quarterback guru if I were coaching any of those guys
LikeLike
Don’t forget that Trask only saw the field because the two guys Mullen actually coached up either got hurt (Franks) or sucked (Jones). Maybe that’s why Trask actually succeeded. The QB Whisperer didn’t whisper in his ear.

I hope him and Paul Johnson enjoy their time at the genius conventions.

I can’t stand either one of those arrogant assholes, but I would take Johnson over Mullen. He knew Tech could never get the athletes to run any type of conventional offense so he had to resort to gimmicks. Mullen has access to anything and everything he could ever wish for and still manages to screw it up.

You are very accurate on Johnson. His biggest issue was his total stubbornness to EVER recruit better players, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
I know quarterback, and to a lesser extent OL were going to be tough sells, but everything else he sold himself short on.

If Florida claims a moral victory over Bama, do they also take the moral defeat to Samford?
LikeLiked by 1 person
The Gator misery is about as good as it gets right now…I actually seen on some of their forums, when it was tied 42-42 they were actually hoping they WOULD lose to Samford, just to get Mullen on out the door. Now with the firing of the assistants, it’s a guarantee that Danny will be back next season. They are hating it and I’M LOVING IT! lolol
