The Right Rev. Dabo

What do you get when you cross a televangelist and a head football coach?

There are times when it amazes me he’s got a couple of national championship trophies in his display case.  More power to him, I guess.

I usually like to mock self proclaimed atheists and agnostics more, because of their smug belief that they’re smarter and religious people are dumb sheep, . . . however,
Dabo wears the religiosity on the sleeve a bit too much for my taste. Yes Dabo, G_d is a Climps’n Tiger! Oy!

I cannot see how Liberty University hasn’t made an offer to Dabo in the $15 million range. It’s a match made in . . . oh, I won’t go there, but you know.

Dabo was rightly called out by the Freedom from Religion Foundation in 2014 for proselytizing in his role as head coach of a public university.

It’s fine if you do or don’t practice religion but it’s not appropriate to be saying that as the highest profile employee of a public university. If it’s that important to Dabo, good for him. There are places where he can go coach football and share his faith. But a public university isn’t one of them.

I would respectfully disagree. Mark Richt shared his faith every day as a head coach at a public university. He just wasn’t a sanctimonious jerk about it.

I’m mindful that the Senator likely doesn’t want a debate on the role of religion turning into a comment war. There’s definitely something to said about the degree of professing being done. Your tolerance for it is higher than mine and that’s fine.

Speaking out against religion or wishing to not have it in your life can be an unpopular thing in the South. But there are those who feel that way and it’s important that kids get an equal shot regardless of their beliefs. I think Mark Richt likely did that. I’m much more skeptical that Dabo does and that’s a real shame.

Richt played the religion card for the Georgia fan base, who he knew was made up of a lot of religious people. When he went to Miami he dropped the “good man” schtick right away and started wearing all black, grew a goatee and adapted to the “U” culture. I’m sure he is a nice enough guy but he knows how to play to his audience and that is a skill that has made him millions of dollars.

I’m having trouble Liking, too. We had that whole controversy about CMR’s BiL serving as a team chaplain.

There’s a difference between sharing your faith and being open about it and bringing out tubs to baptize your football players on the practice fields, which Dabo Swinney did at Clemson. Coach Richt was always open about his belief in God and his faith in Jesus, but he also welcomed all to his team and Musa Smith, a Muslim, said that he was never made to be uncomfortable expressing his own faith in the program. Mark Richt is a class act. Dabo is… an act.

Bullshit. He can say whatever he wants. What he can’t do is make people who don’t share his beliefs suffer in any way. No mandatory prayer sessions or Bible study. No favoring the “saved” on the depth chart, etc…

But he can “witness” all the fuck he wants. And that would be true if he were Muslim as well. Might not be a great recruiting tactic but if a coach wants to thank Allah for beating Auburn, then sure whatever it takes dude.

I don’t think this is the appropriate forum to debate this nor does your tone suggest you actually care about an honest discussion. I’ll simply direct you to the actual source, which outlines DS doing or coming very close to many of the things you mentioned. Using state resources and facilities to promote religion and making players feel ostracized for not participating is troubling. Telling current and future recruits (aka students) that you built a program in the Christian God’s likeness isn’t appropriate.

I’m going to politely request that you tone it down a notch if you’re interested in an actual discussion. Completely uninterested in a profane comment war that gets this otherwise reasonable discussion shutdown by our favorite blogger.

The fuck? That’s how I fucking talk!

Anyway, I was commenting ONLY on the quote. He may well have crossed the line at other times and that line is very important to me as well. A clash of competing rights is always the most challenging.

People have the right to speak. We also all have the right to be free from state establishment of religion.

Where a certain action by a public employee falls on that continuum for me or you may differ but please don’t take my sophomoric use of vulgarity for a lack of sincerity or seriousness.

However, if you think that single quote is on the wrong side of the line, in and of itself alone, well gfy.

          LMAO!!🤣🤣

Not terribly different than what Bobby Bowden used to say. I will say that I think true servants are a bit less prideful on this subject and that I don’t trust the types who act like this. To me its similar to me to boastful and mostly false/ignorant patriotism.

Richt hit the right note 99% of the time. The one after Auburn he rightly apologized for. And he treated Musa like everyone else.

Damn Derek, you and agree again! It must be a Christmas Miracle! I would like to add that everyone who says things like Dabo is saying is not a Christian. There is a reason that pride is the worst sin. It leads to people like Dabo saying things like this.

JCDwag, you are 100% completely wrong with those comments. Richt doesn’t play to an audience and it isn’t a schtick. Don’t know what universe you live in bit it’s out there for sure.
