Check that proto-spread formation out. Then watch what Georgia runs out of that set. (The next play on that clip is a beaut as well.) Then compare that with something HeismanPundit wrote in a comment at Elkon’s blog.
… I grant you that Spurrier did introduce the forward pass to the SEC. But those offenses that started passing were nowhere near as innovative as Spurrier’s and they did not keep up with some of the other leagues…
Yeah, right. There was also some coach named Hal Mumme in the league about that time, if I recall. Bottom line was that the SEC had moved past the “three yards and a cloud of dust” offensive philosophy of the ’80s by then. And that’s because of what Spurrier wrought.

Was this the game that Carter went something like 23 of 25 in passing for the first part of the game? I guess he paid for that in Columbia.

There was that back to back tunnel screen to Champ against Tech where he had the audacity to repeat the same play…… both times hit big gains. Techs HC seemed none too pleased by it.

If I remember right, he became a lot less creative after Scelfo left. Not sure if that was coincidence, or if Scelfo was actually the one being creative.

The above poster is absolutely correct. Chris Scelfo left to become the HC at Tulane. Many forget that he was an excellent OC whose leaving hurt us. But Donnan’s achilles heel was not the offense, it was defense and the merry-go-round of DC’s which included stupid Kevin Ramsey did him in. Well, that and Qwiincy.
People forget that ALL 11 starters on the 2000 D went on the play pro, and most started! Put a very good D coodinator with that talent and you have a machine that rivals Van Gorder’s defenses.
It’s hard to imagine that through the years, our defenses have been our downfall. I predict that all changes in ’11.

I thought Gibbs did a pretty good job in 2000. Obviously the talent to work with made him look better, but really the only inexplicable game that year was Tech and I think the entire team had pretty much hung it up by then.
The defense was the only semi-bright spot on QC’s 5 INT day at Columbia. We should have lost 35-3. That pick before halftime against UF in ’00 was one of the most game-changing plays I have ever seen in my life. Nod doubt, if we don’t throw that pick, we probably win. Auburn was a slugfest that year too, but Donnan got way too cute with the playcalling.

The teams weren’t quite the same when his right-hand man left for Tulane though. (And his obsession with trying to beat UT via hiring their assistants led to the horror that was the Cool Breeze D.)

Quincy as a freshman here is pretty insane too… Shockley showed this sort of talent senior year, but I can’t imagine what he could have looked like if he had redshirted and stuck around another year

Donnan could certainly be creative with an O. But when he ran, or tried to run, the wishbone up in knoxville, it was a real embarrassment.

Ah the LSU Quincy, need to find the SC game where he threw like 5 picks to see the other side of QC. The sad part is, had he not been a coke head and kept his head straight, he could have been Tebow with a better delivery. Oh well.

Should be a great infomercial for the dangers of coke/drugs. Sit all the players/QBs down when they get to campus, and you get a nice “this is your QB brain” – LSU. “This is your QB brain on Coke” – SC. Any Questions?
(Still find it hard to imagine that QC didnt throw that game)

Two things jump out to me here.
1) Heisman Pundit doesn’t know what he’s talking about.
2) Quincy Carter is one of the most disappointing wastes of incredible talent that we’ve ever seen.

Ahhh LSU 98, what a nite. I think I was hung over for two days after that game.
Can’t help but see why Donnan was so stubborn w/ QC in 2K. He had da skills to rifle a pass off his back feet or squirt out of a collapsing pocket as a freshman. Man did he carry that ball like a loaf of bread on those runs, though.
Problem was Q couldn’t read a zone blitz and never improved his footwork or delivery in three years.
Seeing Chris Terry I realize 13 years later we haven’t seen an OT like that since.

Champ Bailey. That is what I got out of that clip, not Quincy Carter. Also, note the line blocking. Like to see that this year. But TV guys, they get hung up on “four more years” mind set. 5 picks against South Carolina. Think that is what most remember about QC. Not sure how you can take a comment by a game caller and name it an offense…spreadout all over the field.

It’s interesting that Saban is winning championships at ALA with a strong running game, super defense, solid special teams, and a decent QB who can throw “a little” but doesn’t lose games.
Have we regressed or is it a simple model that stands the test of time?

That was the first game I watched at the Georgia Theatre. Big screen, Munson on the PA, and the crowd rocking like they’re in the stadium. That may have been one of the more underrated Georgia football-watching traditions, especially for away games. Hope they keep it up now the place is rebuilt.
But Quincy. My goodness what a parable.

I, too, was at the Georgia Theatre for that game. Rocking good time, but I made a freshman mistake — sitting in the lower level. Beer and cigarette butts were falling from the sky after the win, but I didn’t care.

Ah yes, that day in ’98…beautiful fall day and it lined up perfect. The 12:00 game that day was fla vs bama and the 3:30 game was tenn vs aub (or vice versa), then the Dawgs at night winning in Baton Rouge! One of the biggest parties Rome, Ga has ever seen – trust me on that one.

Was it the following week that Tennessee came to Athens along with Gameday? What a cluster that weekend was…Lightenberg giving up a home run to Camaniti on a pitch that never should have been thrown (it was a 3-1 count with one out and no one on base and a freaking 40 year old Leyritz was on deck…that’s a double play waiting to happen…ugh…, Brown throwing a 1 hitter, and then that awful Saturday with Sterling Hitchcock turning into Cy Young and UGA going down 22-3 because Travis Stephens and Travis Henry didn’t care that Jamal had blown out his knee. (And man it was hot that day…I just remember skinny girls passing out all over the place b/c they were drinking for a fall game and it was like 90 degrees)

That was the best road game I ever attended. I even got cold-cocked by an LSU fan leaving the game, and later stranded at the airport an extra day due to storms, but it still didn’t damper my mood. Best called by game by Donnan in his tenure. I still remember the look of disbelief when the cop said I provoked the attack by wearing a UGA cap.

That pass from Bailey to Quincy was awesome. That put the stadium in shock. It was still early but that play beat them. Best play of Donnan era.
