Tuesday morning buffet

It’s getting closer.  Here are a few tidbits to keep your appetites whetted:

  • The SEC, trying to fashion an in-stadium experience that TV viewers can be proud of.
  • Your NCAA dollars at work.  Since Legends and Leaders are already taken, can I suggest renaming the two parts of Division I as “Mo’ Money” and “Less Money”?
  • While we’re on the subject of money, it looks like the cash cow that is the Tennessee athletics department is running on fumes.  It may not be fair, but another mediocre year in football likely means SOD is out the door.  UT simply can’t afford the status quo.
  • Justin Smith Morrill, the unsung father of American college football.
  • Sunday Morning Quarterback is resurrected.  That’s a good thing.
  • Here’s a look at how every school in the AP Top 25 got its nickname.
  • You can find a summary of the SEC quarterback situations here.
  • Non-football related, but here’s a Freedom of Information Act request we can all support.
  • Bruce Feldman takes a look at a very cool new website, XandOLabs.com.
  • Even when it doesn’t involve playing in Jacksonville, Mark Richt keeps tabs on the weather.

Good Lord, now Mark Richt has lost control of the weather!! (How’d you miss that one Senator?)

I also find it interesting that FSU was originally called the Florida State College for Women!! Now there’s something to be proud of ladies!!

My aunt Irene was a graduate of the Florida College for women. Took the influx of post WWII GIs and the GI bill paying tuition to change that.

Enjoyed the article about land-grant colleges, but it is based on a faulty assumption–that all those colleges were founded as a result of the grant. In some cases this may be true (e.g. LSU), but there are other land-grant institutions (e.g. UGA) that were up and running before.

It also employs the erroneous assumption that, if the government hadn’t established those colleges, then colleges would probably be extinct. Or, that it’s a good thing that we have bartenders with masters degrees and $60k in student loan debt.

Well, the author isn’t saying all the land-grant colleges in the nation are from the Act; he’s noting some that were, and many of them are now big football schools.

And actually, the Ag School in Athens was established as the State College of Agriculture and Mechanical Arts with funds from land scrip via the Morrill Act, which were sold for $243k in 1872. It’s money that helped keep UGA afloat, as it was originally staffed by UGA faculty and friends of the school convinced the legislature to allow UGA to receive annual cash from the Ag School funds.

The work Andrew Soule did with his College on Wheels program (early 1900s) helped brand UGA as more than a place for the sons of rich families to get drunk and cause trouble for a few years (one of the many reasons the state wasn’t really supporting the school financially). His work helped define UGA as a symbol of the state, and thus set up the conditions that establish what the author is saying here, that the devotion to the football team is inextricable from the devotion to the idea of the university.”

And I should clarify, just in case, that Andrew Soule was president of the Ag School from 1907 until the schools were merged in 1932. He’s also made the winning arguments that allowed UGA to formally admit female undergrads in 1918 (though WWI helped with that).

Senator, hope you noticed this bit in the FCS article:

“A group of NCAA staff, college presidents, conference commissioners, coaches and athletic directors is working on details for a brand rollout in 2013, to coincide with the FCS increasing its playoff bracket from *20 to 24 teams*.”

Wow. I didn’t realize how much Clemson really was Auburn with a lake. I was not aware they took there colors and “Tigers” nickname from the Aubs. You learn something new everyday.

  7. What fresh hell is this?

It’s nice to know coach Richt keeps tabs on the weather. I just hope he pays as much attention to playing surfaces. Is the team getting any time on a surface like they’ll play on in MO? (don’t even comment about looking past Buffalo)
I hate to mention this, but it also makes me worry about injuries on an artificial surface.

There is at least one Fieldturf field in the Woodruff complex. So yes, they get enough practice time on the “rug”.

The SEC rule change will allow bands to be amped at least at half time. Man, I hope we can take advantage of that this year.

No kidding…. if you go to a game you only have a 50% chance of being able to hear the redocats at halftime since they alternate which direction they play to and if it’s the opposite side you can’t hear a damn thing.

UT has one of the largest revenue producing athletic departments in all of college sports and they are in the red.
How did UT become such a dog and pony show? Hamilton giving The Pumpkin King an extension and then firing him a few months later cost UT 6 mil. They should have cut Hamilton too! Now add to that Pearle and a nice 1.2 million that Hammy was able to take with him when he headed out the door. SOD is in year 3 of a 6 year deal. Firing SOD after this year will cost them 5 million. 4 in years four and five and $2.5 if he gets the boot before Dec.31 2015. Are there not accountants, business managers and attorneys on the payroll at Knoxvegas? At least they have upgraded the facilities there. But playing keep up with the Jones is expensive. Georgia should keep improving theirs forcing UT to try keep pace and napalm them into insolvency. “Smell that?”

Scuttlebutt is that SOD and his team of agent(s), accountant(s) and attorney(s) knew the risk of walking into the Valley of The Shadow of Death near Dollywood. Negotiating with Hamilton on the buyouts for SOD, given the high probabilities of sudden ambush and disaster, was like taking candy from a baby. Consequently, SOD and his team of assistants will not smell the napalm because they’ll be evacuated with buyouts well prior to that strike just as Lane was thereby leaving whoever is the UT AD now with only enough Dong to rehire Johnny Majors

UT was in the hole when they started. It cost $500,000 for them to hire SOD from his previous position. La Tech is laughing all the way to the bank. They were 4-8 and 3-5 WAC, SOD last year. Then Sonny Dykes took them to 8-5/6-1 WAC and they won the WAC in 2011 in his second year. It looks like whoever handled the monetary value of the dong is handling contracts and accounting for the Hillbillies. Oh, and SOD is gonna need another helicopter.

Yes but as Barbara would tell you or the agitators on Athens’ 1340 radio, Sonny won with SOD’s players and, after SOD evacuated from Ruston, so did the WAC

Baabs needs to understand that SOD’s best season ..(yr 2) was a tie for second place in the WAC with somebody else’s players. His third season with mostly his troops…. hmmmm 4-8.

+1 …not telling. The odd thing to me about UT and their lack of fiscal responsibility? Even with the writing on the wall they continue to spend what they don’t have. (sound familiar?…) Pat Summitt maybe the highest paid lady bball coach at 2 mil a year? Yet, UT just has to give her a million and then hire her at $380,000 a year to do what? as she heads into retirement? Unbelievable. Reminds me of our Civil Service. Retire at 90% of yearly salary and get paid $25000. to retire before your 60. Unbelievable.

Unbelievable indeed. State and local government management get the same kind of sweet deal through the Florida Retirement System a/k/a to those who are not plan participants or alternate payees as the Best Retirement System in the Galaxy as we presently know it. But I digress. I thought Pat was disabled. Maybe she had the same team of agent(s), accountant(s) and attorney(s) that SOD had.

That was a misstatement on my part. Pat was around for so long that I’m sure she didn’t need an assist from SOD’s team of people. I forgot Hart from Jimbo’s FSU was Hamilton’s replacement. Nick’s moles have infiltrated the SEC and the ACC. Now if we can just get Mayor of Dawgtown off the trail of SEC officiating conspiracies against Georgia to look into Nick’s takeover of college football and the NCAA through Emmert who hired him at LSU, we’ll be getting somewhere

And still the best war movie ever produced. Incidentally, I see another apocalyptic season ahead for the Vols. Okay, that may be overboard with the hyperbole, but it’ll be at best a .500 campaign in the SEC. I would expect the Dawgs to pummel them by at least 2 TDs but I’ve thought that before and had my comeuppance.

Kiffykins created excitement all right. About the best excitement he created from my perspective was shuttling J.Jones the Dawgs’ way. He may just win a game all by himself this season somewhere along the way.
