I don’t think it’s worth reading too much into this, but the coaches are using bowl practice to take a look at Tramel Terry at safety.
On the other hand, this is an interesting development:
Meanwhile, safety Shaquille Fluker was not at practice on Monday and an announcement of a transfer could be coming this week.
The junior college transfer was away from the team to return to his home in Meridian, Miss., near the end of the regular season. He has not played this season. He’s been listed on the injury report during the season with an undisclosed illness.
Damian Swann’s indicated he’s not leaving early, so if that holds up, almost all of Georgia’s secondary will return next season. There isn’t much of a numbers game, then, which makes you wonder if this indicates the coaches are seriously exploring other options. Lord knows the safety position could use whatever help it could get.
Get The Picture 
Tramel was a special talent on offense in high school, so it doesn’t make much sense to me. Matthews and Mauger are going to be just fine there, and Corey Moore will be back. Grantham doesn’t sub, so we don’t need much depth on defense. We certainly don’t need to waste a kid who could play 15-20 snaps a game on offense and score a few meaningful TDs in big games so we can have a back-up safety.
However, I do believe we’re in conundrum with Matthews and Harvey-Clemmons size. I’m not sure we know what to do with them. Harvey-Clemmons is a tackling machine. It’d be great to get him more to the line of scrimmage. Matthews is a monster, but he’s a future star at that position. I’m hoping Terry’s stint there is experimental.

Prince Amukamara was a special talent on offense in AZ and was recruited by Bill Callahan (and everyone else) to be a slot WR a la Terry at Nebraska. Pelini came in, saw him in practice and turned him into a corner. He went on to be a first round pick in the NFL. People need to trust the coaches way more than they do.

I agree. I just think he can be a talent on offense. They’re only going to put a kid there if they think he can help us make one more play. That’s the name of the game.

Mitchell was recruited as a DB and they saw his potential at WR when he came in. After what we went through this year with Trey’s re-occurring hamstring issues, I see this as a proactive try-out at a position of need. Mitchell & Samuel’s flip to D were closer to sheer necessities.

If we get other options at CB, I would think Langley at FS would be worth a shot. He’s got good size and his coverage skills should be good enough for safety.

I agree that Terry at safety makes no sense if he’s as good on offense as some say coming out of high school. I would love for the coaches to focus heavily on special teams with him. He could return kicks and punts. It would be nice to have a consistent 3 year starter at those jobs who can do more than just not screw up.

Playing around with Terry and Langley (two athletic kids who can play multiple positions) makes sense at this time. I’d like to see both of them get shots at returning punts as well, but until the coverage unit gets (a lot) better, it won’t matter who fields the punts.

I’m guessing there is definitely some depth concern. I agree with sUGArdaddy that Matthews is a future star (potentially), but he has yet to show he can stay healthy for more than 3 games in a row. I understand a nagging injury like a hamstring, sometimes they just linger, but he had several other injuries too. If all we have back there is Matthews, Mauger, and Moore, that doesn’t leave a lot of room for injuries. We managed to scrape by this year, but barely, especially at the end of the year.
I saw some things on Twitter than Langley has been in the dog house, and there’s rumor of him transferring (I also saw the rumor of him switching to WR). Anything more to the doghouse thing than just getting beat a lot earlier in the year, or is there more to it than that? I still think he has a ton of potential as a DB, whether at corner or safety. But it was odd how he played so much through the LSU game, then I don’t think we saw him again except for one play against Tech when Dawson was shaken up. I mean, Wiggins earned the playing time ahead of him, but to not see Langley at all the 2nd half of the year just struck me as odd.
Also, count me as one that would like to see JHC used closer to the line of scrimmage, kinda like how BVG used Thomas Davis on passing downs. The thought of a blitz package sending Drew, Jenkins, Floyd, and JHC on obvious passing downs seems (on paper, at least) pretty tantalizing. Seems I remember somewhere seeing that JHC has put on 20 lbs in the past year. With his frame, it’s not crazy to suspect that he could put on another 20 lbs pretty quickly. At that point though, I don’t want to see him trying to cover guys out of the Star position, he’d just about have to play either a true safety role or slide to a LB position.

Swann had a terrible first half of the season. But after the muffed punt against Vandy, something switched on his head, and he played solid ball the rest of the year. I’m excited to see what he does next year. We are better off with him than without, IMO.

Agreed. Swann is a good player who, I think, got too caught up in worrying about others being in the right spots. He’ll be fine, and was fine for most of the year, to be honest. This is not another Reshad Jones situation here.

Swann tweeted his stats after the Vanderbilt game, which says all you need to know about where his head is at: He can be a bit of a dope (seriously, dude, the muffed punt….), but he cares. He played better as the season went on. Props.
I was making a point about WillieMart to a friend and rewatched that Jones “tackle” attempt against Tech in ’08. Even worse than I remembered.

Agree. Swann played well the second half of the season.
I think there was an effort to simplify the defensive playcalling later in the season that helped take some load off of Swann. I noticed a lot less arm flapping while the opponent was calling their plays.

It was odd to see Langley get roasted on the spit against SC, then not worthy of another 5 plays when Wiggins got burned a few times. Seems to be no shades of gray with our defense, all in, or gone. It is hard to understand that philosophy. TT could be our answer as a returner, and add some depth at DB. We have plenty of WRs, although he could play a role there too if that were to change.
I wish we had used Mitchell as a corner back this season, he would have had no chance of getting injured celebrating a score from that unit.
