Meanwhile, in a scrimmage to the northeast…

Sounds like the OBC ain’t happy.

The trio of remaining contenders vying to replace Dylan Thompson under center are redshirt sophomore Connor Mitch, the presumptive favorite, redshirt freshmanMichael Scarnecchia and redshirt junior Perry Orth.  Those players struggled mightily in a scrimmage Saturday, completing a combined 10-of-22 passes for 121 yards, no touchdowns and an interception.

Not surprisingly, the Ol’ Ball Coach didn’t mince many words when summing up that subpar effort.

“The quarterbacks, none of them shined. It was not encouraging on the offensive side. … Connor Mitch held the ball too much at times and threw late at times, as did all of them,” head coach Steve Spurrier said in quotes distributed by the team. “But the protection probably wasn’t all that super at times either. Hopefully we can learn from it. The offense did a lot better [Friday] than they did [Saturday], but the defense did better than they did [Friday]. We’ve got a lot of work to do, a lot of improvement to do.”

Maybe he’s just trying to make sure the media doesn’t overrate his team going into the season.

I have a feeling they’ll be ready for the UGA game.

      +1
Never take anything a great coach says about his team during Spring Practice at face value. It’s all window dressing. It’s yeast being added to whatever he’s baking..
Spurrier will build a respectable team.

It’s the one game you may be assured gives them any sense of purpose and meaning. Because gamechicken foortball is otherwise pointless.

Sad sad, sad to see such indecisive situations arise in Spurrier’s mind. Hope it stays that way into the Fall. Yeah, he’ll make a game of it, but it had better be on the D side or he will drowned by a torrent of O.

He’s made a damn good game of it 4 of the last 5 times we’ve played.

I hate that we’ve lost to South Carolina 4 of the past 5 years, but I really think we should beat them pretty well this year for 2 reasons.

It’s not that Spurrier deserved to win all 4 of the past 5 games. 2 out of the 4 games (2011 and 2014) UGA definitely lost more than SC won. We’re not getting run out of the building (except for 2012 bangs head on desk).
The talent level on South Carolina’s team has been dropping over the past couple of years (while ours has been rising for the past 2, especially on defense). The past 5 years have been the best years of South Carolina football history, and I don’t think they’re getting the Jimmies and Joes they need to continue winning at that type of pace.

Bonus 3. We’ve got a few more games this year to figure stuff out before we play them. I know SC is always up for the UGA game, but I think we’ll be ready.

Everything you say is absolutely true. Unfortunately, they still have Spurrier as their coach and we still have Richt and Spurrier owns Richt now.

Nice post – agree that SC has a talent drop off but not sure how much we have been rising vs staying even.

East, actually, but we’ll take it.

Hopefully, this year, if we get to goal to go, we’ll hand it to Chubb and not have to even worry about the missed extra point….

Why is it that Spurrier can’t seem to recruit any talent at quarterback? He does a good job coaching them once they get there but you’d think he’d be pulling in some decent prospects there.

      Great question.

I mean recently, anyway – Thompson, Shaw and Garcia were all solid recruits.

I didn’t remember that Thompson and Shaw were, so I just googled:

          Thompson was a 2 star
Shaw was a 3 star (47th best player in GA)
Garcia was a 4 star, though.

          • Garcia was a 4 star that acted like a rock star.
Suspended five times, yet capable of leading a team to one of the worst beatings of Nick Saban’s Alabama dynasty, Garcia was an enigmatic party man quarterback during his five years in Columbia, South Carolina. Did South Carolina coaches really find him drunk with naked girls in his hotel room the night before the 2011 bowl game against Florida State and make him sober up by running on a treadmill? What about keying a professor’s car? And why did he get kicked off the 2011 team midway through the season? What’s it like to find yourself a football star on an SEC campus at the age of 18?

Let me rephrase that. I agree it looks like SOS isn’t getting lots of 4-5 star recruits in that position, so understand what you mean – it’s inscrutable.

I was just trying to point out that he has recruited some pretty good QB’s over the last few years (even if they started out under the radar) – although much of their success is probably also his coaching, of course.

And Garcia is also an iffy person to use the word “solid” on, of course…
