It wasn’t too long ago when the concept of Georgia having an inside linebacker who wasn’t a liability in pass coverage was nothing more than a pipe dream. I don’t know about you, but I used to be haunted by images of wide open tight ends running freely across the middle.
That was then. This is now.
Different skill sets, to be sure, but Smith’s dominance reminds me more and more of Jarvis Jones’ in the sense that he’s the guy every offensive coordinator facing Georgia has to game plan around.
He reminds me of Rennie Curran. Looks like he is being shot out of a cannon going east west across the field. And arrives with authority. Dude balls every game, without fail. Fearsome.

Curran is one of my all-time favorites, but pass coverage was not one of his strengths. Go back and look at that post of Ian Boyd’s I linked to yesterday. Smith is the most well-rounded ILB Georgia’s deployed in ages.

Totally agree. My comment was based on the lateral speed of both players. Rennie def was not the strongest in pass coverage – but was he a joy to watch!

CJ Moseley looks like Roquan Smith. Enough said.

That type of propaganda needs to stop. He’s not NFL ready. No question we…errr he needs one more year in Athens.

+1 What a huge break to have gotten him with all the UCLA drama surrounding his commitment. I was happy it worked out for us then but had no idea the monster he would become. Is it asking too much for him to come back like Chubb, Michel, Davin and Lorenzo did last year? Probably, or at least it might depend on how this year ends. Quite the combo: speed of Ogletree, middle thumper/stuffer like Curran and Odell, and the perimeter defender like Jarvis.

No chance. NFL teams are increasingly looking for linebackers just like Roquan. He looks to be a mid first round pick.

Fran Trarkington needs to take up a collection.

He appears serious about getting his degree. One can hope that and really honing his game into a top 10 pick will keep him in Athens for a 4th season.

dating myself, but his enthusiasm to hit and nose for the ball carrier have me thinking of Zambiasi

Tight ends can’t run free over the middle! They have to stay in to help block! ha ha ha ha… ( Rubs hands together and laughs maniacally)

Why isn’t he on the Butkus list?

Reminds me of Troy Polamalu or Bob Sanders if those guys played linebacker. Smith could end up pulling a reverse Thomas Davis and switch from linebacker to rover/safety at the next level.
