I read all of Bill Connelly’s concerns about the Tigers secondary during the week leading up to the game, but somehow I still was unprepared for how porous Missouri’s pass coverage was. The number of times I saw all of Georgia’s receivers properly covered/defended on a given play could have been counted on one hand, and I wouldn’t have needed all my fingers, either. Considering that Fromm threw the ball 26 times, that’s not good.
The Tigers sold out to stop the interior run and were moderately successful doing so. That left outside runs and that whole throwing the ball thing, which they were anything but moderately successful defending.
Mizzou wound up even on turnover margin — the first game against a P5 opponent they managed that feat this season — scored more points against Georgia than any team the Dawgs have played… and still lost by 25.
If nothing else, now we know that making Fromm beat you isn’t always a winning strategy when you face Georgia.
Bullet points, for the win:
- Okay, Jake wasn’t perfect, but he was close enough that his big error of the day, the interception, barely slowed things down. His pre-snap reads were effective, he ran the read option well (I only saw one misread when he should have kept the ball), he handled the blitz flawlessly and, as usual, he displayed nice touch and accuracy on his passes. It’s exciting to think where he’ll be with a year’s experience under his belt reading SEC defenses.
- Mecole Hardman is real and he’s spectacular.
- D’Andre Swift ain’t too shabby, either.
- The Dawgs didn’t run much I-formation stuff, but Christian Payne is due a shout-out for the crushing block he laid that opened up Hardman’s touchdown run.
- Speaking of crushing, Sony Michel.
- The offensive line had a little trouble with Missouri’s run defense at times, but pass blocked well. Fromm faced little pressure throughout the night, which certainly contributed to his poise. On the other hand, Chubb got next to no support running up the middle. He singlehandedly prevented a safety through sheer effort when Missouri defensive lineman shot past Kindley.
- I think Georgia just converted another third down.
- It used to be they’d save Chubb for the fourth quarter to pound tired defenses into submission. Now they just unleash Herrien and Holyfield for that.
- Hurdling, for the win. I mean, Charlie Woerner? (That was a fun run after the catch to watch.)
- The two long passes Drew Lock threw for touchdowns were disappointing, to say the least. The first looked like it was the result of a busted coverage, as Reed was too late getting over to provide safety help. I’m not exactly sure who deserves fault for the second, as McGhee appeared to lose the receiver and Sanders was late getting over in coverage. The secondary was lucky; before those two TD catches, there was another well thrown deep ball to a receiver who had beaten the coverage but appeared to pull up and missed the reception.
- The bombs got everyone’s attention, but I really loved the play that resulted in Missouri’s first score, an option look with a shovel pass to the tight end.
- When Roquan Smith shows he’s human — he whiffed in pass coverage once — it’s gotten to the point where it’s shocking.
- I’m not so sure I’d call the Sanders interception the game’s turning point because with the way Georgia’s offense was going I never felt like the outcome was in jeopardy. Let’s just say it was more like watching serve being broken in a tennis match. Once Georgia got up by two scores, you pretty much knew the Tigers wouldn’t be able to overcome the gap.
- Pass rush was inconsistent at best. How much of that is due to personnel issues in the front seven with the injuries and suspension and how much of that is due to more ingrained issues is something to keep an eye on. Right now, I’d say it’s the biggest concern on defense (and, yes, I know that’s relative.)
- On the other hand, the defense continues to play lights out against the run.
- Special teams weren’t perfect again, damn it. Georgia didn’t get much at all out of its return game and flopped on the coverage of the opening kickoff. Of course, maybe they were just surprised by Blankenship whiffing the kick. That was really his only flaw of the night, though, as he responded from there with four field goals and touchback after touchback. Nizialek was only called on to punt once, but, man, was it a beauty.
- If there’s one puzzling thing — okay, call it a shortcoming — about game management this season, it’s how the last series of the first half continues to be directed. Georgia had all three timeouts at its disposal and two and a half minutes remaining when it got the ball back and proceeded to use more than half of the remaining time on its first series of three runs. What that meant was that when Michel ran the ball to the Missouri 23, there were only eight seconds remaining and Smart elected not to risk running out the clock with a play into the end zone. With better clock management, there would have been enough time left in that situation to have the option to play more aggressively. Yeah, in the overall scheme of things, that may be quibbling, but when the time comes that Georgia’s in a closer game, I hope that’s something that doesn’t come back to bite Kirby in the ass.
- On the other hand, the staff is flat-out killing it with halftime adjustments. The third quarter has belonged to Georgia all season; correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think the defense has given up a third-quarter touchdown this year.
- When you direct the offense to Georgia’s second-best yardage total in history, you really don’t leave yourself open to much criticism. Chaney did another great job. He probed the Tigers’ defense and had no problem exploiting the openings that were provided. He gets the ball into the hands of his playmakers. He’s done a brilliant job managing Fromm’s strengths and weaknesses.
- I’m sure Tucker was livid about the deep coverage failures. It wasn’t a secret it was the best thing about Lock’s game and yet the first half saw receivers getting behind the safeties regularly. He did make some adjustments that were effective, as Mizzou barely gained over 100 yards in the second half. Still, the experience makes me a little nervous about what to expect against Auburn and Jarrett Stidham.
- As far as Smart goes, he faced a test to see how his team handled prosperity. Georgia was sloppy throughout. Three consecutive penalties on the offense when it was backed up inside its ten, one of which ruined a great run by Swift, indicated an issue with a lack of focus at times. But even with that, this team displayed the killer instinct that’s marked its run so far through the conference schedule. That’s what you’d expect from a team that’s loaded with talent but still feeling its way with how to maintain its consistency through the grind of a conference schedule. There are going to be those days and those opponents when it’s hard to bring your A game all day long. These guys fought through it for the most part, and that’s to their head coach’s credit.
So, here we are. Georgia is 7-0 and in complete control of its destiny. It’s overcome the preseason concerns about the offensive line and receiving corps. It’s thrived despite losing its starting quarterback to an injury in the opener. The schedule gets tougher with several rivalry games on the horizon. In other words, the real fun is about to begin.
By the way, I just wanted to say I enjoyed meeting every one of the GTP readers who stopped by the tailgate before the game. You guys are the best.
Even when it was 21-21 I found I wasn’t really worried. That was shocking to me.

Was the busted coverage by Roquan the seam route by the TE late in the game? I was in the car by then and Zeir said that the Safeties had been split out way wide b/c our DB’s were getting burned and the LB’s have to keep in mind they have no help behind them.
The first time we got burned, JR Reed was slow to get over. He’s been a gamer this year so I hope the speed and size of Mizzou WR’s was a learning moment for him.
The second bad burn was helped by McGhee stumbling.

UGA split both safeties wider and played them deeper after half, that succeeded in keeping their speedsters in front of them. Nice adjustment. But the play you are asking about wasn’t so much a busted cover but our LBs had to cover were territory before the safety help was there and the reciver found that open zone. So yeah, the LBs have to drop back further and cover more area when we move the safties back.
I said last week that Mizzou would be the first cobo with a really good passer and some receivers that could both fly, and catch it. Good lesson for us to learn when we see another team like that, but we fixed it at half. FU cannot hurt us that way with their personnel. Still, I would like more pressure when we do come up against someone like that again.

I thought the first one was Reed more looking to the man deep in the middle of the field which was already covered by Sanders and not realizing his need to be on 84.
LikeLike
He did, but had he been slit further out he would have been a position to see the WR coming for a deep throw, and/or recovered enough to contest the pass. We made the adjustment after the 2nd TD and shut it down…but the middle was more vulnerable.

I actually felt sorry for that poor kid Sony trucked. Hope it was just a stinger and not something serious. Fromm is going to need to improve his eye discipline against Florida.

I was very impressed by Fromm and was glad to see Chaney let him open it up a bit. And let’s face it, his interception was a lucky play by Mizzou’s linebacker who stuck his hand up in the air and just managed to tip the ball. I don’t even fault Fromm for that. I would have put Eason in in the fourth quarter to get him some reps. but maybe he was just not healthy enough.
I really think the defense played well except for three passes in the first half where we got burned deep, and we paid the price on two of them. Credit Tucker for making changes at half and completely shutting down Missouri’s offense. I am glad to see some younger guys get a lot of playing time, but we are really going to need Thompson, Davis, and especially Patrick back on defense as we progress.
As always, nice post Senator.

Eh, it was a little more than that. Fromm’s a true freshman, and while he’s a precocious one, he’s still got a ways to go on reading a defense after the snap. I haven’t watched the replay yet, but it sure looked to me from where I was sitting that Fromm locked into his target and the LB read his eyes all the way.
As I say, the rest of Fromm’s day was so good, it’s almost not worth harping on, but it’ll be a bit of concern when Fromm faces better defenses than Missouri’s. Like he will in Georgia’s next game…

Spot on Senator. The MLB did a really nice job of shifting into coverage and reading Fromm. At the snap, he was 1 yd behind the tackle.
It also was a poor pass, though perhaps on purpose. The throw was behind the TE, if it would have been to him it would have gone straight to the MLB.
LikeLike
Correct on both counts. It was behind and one could reason that occurred because he didn’t want it getting to the MLB. Does my memory serve me correctly that there were three LBs swarming near that receiver? Haven’t seen a replay, but was that Nauta commanding all that attention?

Mizzou was in 4-2 nickel. FS must have been 18+ yards deep, as he wasn’t even in the frame. Both ILB were pressed up pre-snap, FS and NB were both outside the hashes. The flat had to look promising to Fromm pre-snap.
The left ILB covered Swift on the snap.
The right ILB dropped into coverage and made the play.
Ridley was wide open underneath.
at 16 seconds.

Agree. Kinda low. I guess they didn’t have very many highlight plays to choose from — two bombs, an interception, and nice TD completion up the middle. Other than those four plays, they mostly got demolished.

You’ll see it a little differently when you see the replay, Senator.
Yes, Fromm is a true freshman, and he’s going to make a couple mistakes now and then, but that pass was on track to hit Nauta between the numbers. The UM linebacker was simply trying to reach out and knock the ball down, but the outcome wound up being that he became the beneficiary of a fortuitous tip that flipped right into his hand.
It was more of a great play by the defender with a little luck thrown in, than a poor pass or poor decision by Fromm.
As for Fromm being tested by better defenses down the road, I’m not convinced that he will be so rattled by any defense we face from here on out, that he just hurtles like a comet out of control.
Except for a very few times early on, he has protected the ball pretty well by not making a habit of attempting risky pass completions.
This kid throws an accurate, tight spiral at a velocity that is just fast enough
to keep it away from most defenders yet deemed very catchable by his receivers.
Fromm didn’t throw for over 12K yards in one of the toughest and most competitive regions in GHSA football, one chocked full of D-1 talent most every week, by a twist of fate or luck.
This kid can play.
And I do not believe it is in any way jumping on some sort of pre-disposed championship bandwagon to acknowledge that.
Finally, as to these supposed offensive and defensive juggernauts we are about to have to face, I’m not impressed…with any of them… other than Alabama, who’s earned it.
The Gators defense?
Didn’t they just face two teams in back-to-back weeks, who while sometimes explosive, have struggled with multiple issues this season, and are overall only above average?
Yet UF’s vaunted defense couldn’t keep them off the scoreboard enough to protect their own team’s pitiful offensive outputs against likewise only above average defenses. (At least as compared to LSU and TAMU defenses of the past)
Auburn?
They have faced exactly two teams who can play a little defense…
Clemson, who’s pretty damn good, and the aforementioned above average LSU and…
THEY LOST.
Stidham?
The greatest thing to ever grace the plains of eastern Alabama?
The most awesome quarterback to play for the Tiggers since Jeremy Johnson?
The guy who couldn’t win the starting job at a putridly awful Baylor?
The guy who posted a whopping 35% completion rate this past Saturday?
How many times have we lost to AU since 2000, regardless of venue?
How many times to a Gus Malzahn coached team?
I understand you don’t want your readers to think you’re just a homer, but damn!
This pack of Dawgs is going to learn from the mistakes they made on Saturday, and come out of the tunnel in Jacksonville breathing fire and brimstone, you can believe that.
While I know some crazy shit can happen on the banks of the St Johns, I’ll be shocked if we don’t win by at least 21.
Auburn ain’t never faced having to stop 5 sets of fresh legs attached to as much talent as we’ll bring to JH on November 11th.
They couldn’t beat us last year when our OL was not very good at all, so I’m thinking they’re gonna REALLY miss that load of NFL DL talent they lost to the draft this past April.
I don’t really care for Kool-Aid, by the way.

Yes, he made an athletic play, but it wasn’t slightly tipped. He knew where Fromm was going before Fromm tossed it.

It was a bad pass….but hard to argue on his performance this game and for the year. I believe I read the other day that if the year finished out today, that Fromm would have the 2nd highest QBR in the school’s history….Murray holds that record. The kid does an excellent job with adjustments, accuracy and leadership. Glad to see the staff allow him to work on his passing game, gonna need it down the road.
LikeLike
That wasn’t lucky. As he’s done most of the year, Fromm locked in on his first option from the snap and the LB read it the whole time. I hope our defense, special teams and run game stay great because a good balanced defense is gonna make him pay. For as few passes as he’s thrown he’s had some bad interceptions and more that the better defenses will get. He’s living a fortunate life right now.

“For as few passes as he’s thrown he’s had some bad interceptions and more that the better defenses will get.”
As compared to the really good interceptions Eason threw last year, right? I think the one that lost the Tech game was my favorite.
But seriously…Fromm is leading the SEC in passing efficiency right now after seven games. There’s nothing “fortunate” about it. The kid is money.
LikeLike
Let me guess…you think Eason would have done better in that situation, right? You think he didn’t lock onto one specific target over and over again last year? I’ve seen Fromm miss one opportunity to throw to a receiver that was obviously wide open, and one that he should have thrown to; Sony Michel vs. App State.
You don’t need to check down to your 3rd receiver if the first one is open.
Fromm is 7 games removed from high school, and he’s leading the SEC in passing efficiency… and your arm-chair quarterback method of critiquing deems you qualified to judge his performance thus far?
A 170+ rating says he is absolutely making the right decisions the vast majority of the time.
The only “balanced” defense Fromm and his team will face is Alabama, pal…and nobody, including me, is forecasting that far ahead.
That’s because it is a one play, one series, one game at a time process that this team is following, and I happen to agree with it wholeheartedly.
You, on the other hand, have already deemed Fromm will wilt under pressure and ultimately fail in his endeavor to lead this team forward.
I don’t want to read any crap about you being pragmatic…you’re just a fair weather fan, if you’re a fan at all, who’s become conditioned to expect mediocrity and failure.
The coaching staff trusts him, but more importantly, the team trusts him.
And so do I.
You? I don’t know about.

Maybe it is just the Munson in me, but this game severely dampened my expectations for the rest of the season. Why? We gave up 21 first half points to a team that only managed a single field goal against PURDUE. And how they did it was no surprise at all, yet they really didn’t have a lot of trouble moving the ball. On offense they beat themselves, mostly via dropped passes and errant throws. Roquan was exposed in pass coverage, as I saw multiple times where he looked confused about his coverage, and got burned for it.
And they are simply atrocious on defense. Fromm had a good game in that he mostly did what he was supposed to, but I have a hard time taking away anything else other than that. Zero chance he has that easy of a time against Florida, Auburn, or Alabama.

“We gave up 21 first half points to a team that only managed a single field goal against PURDUE.” And, I might point out, a team that the concensus here decided might be the worst team in the SEC.

It’s not then points, it’s how they got them. They got 7 of those on a pick.
They got 14 on 2 “fly” routes. Anyone paying attention knows that the weakness in the scheme we play is the deep ball. Any team with a big, fast receivers and a qb who can lay it out there will cause us problems.
This has been known since Saban brought his defending national championship team into Athens 13 seasons ago and Fred and Reggie and David torched them for 45. Mike Evans had a game where he averaged 40 yards a catch (7 for 280 yards) against CKS and CNS. Despite that weakness they’ve won a ton of games with it because very few teams can hit that play consistently.
I know UF has a kid that can fly and I know Franks can launch it so that will be something to watch in two weeks.

The first of which is chugging the kool-aide and destroying brick walls everywhere. It is now SEC Champ and Playoff berth or bust for them.
The second is looking for excuses anywhere they can “cuz Georgia” and can’t enjoy the wins we’ve had for focusing on the negative and anxiously awaiting the moment where we stub our toe or lose a game I guess so they can say I told you so.
For both groups, I say try to revisit your opinion of this team and what your realistic goals were for this team back in August. The lack of pressure on Lock was the most concerning issue to me from the game. Commentators referenced halftime adjustments and better pressure, but I didn’t see it. I don’t remember us ever getting a hand on him.
One of Carter/Bellamy was regularly out in order to get the extra DB in the game, which was good game planning by Mizzou. But while our front 3 seem all-world at eating up blockers, shutting down gaps, and making lateral run-stuffing tackles, they don’t seem to be able to explode through the OL on obvious passing downs.
Thankfully, not sure we will see a pocket passer as good as Lock the rest of the season.

Runs the offense like a seasoned old pro and makes all the throws. I suppose others will keep on bringing up the ‘inexperienced freshman’ tag, but he looks as smooth as silk to me.

I was one of those harping on the inexperience of Fromm and saying Eason needs snaps. After Saturday I am firmly in the camp that this is Fromm’s team and we will go as far as he takes us. I swear he looks just like Murray out there sometimes.

Yep. Reincarnation of Murray’s QB days, but will end up setting his own placement in UGA annals. He has earned our faith in him and he’s “just a Freshman”.
Did anyone notice the “I’m in the game” rig(earphones in contact with coaches?) that Eason had on the sideline? While Smart defended him from remarks last week, he still didn’t want that perception going forward into the Mizzou game. Kudos for them both.

RE: Third quarter scoring. I looked at the numbers last week, and Georgia had outscored opponents 89-3 in the third. It’s up to 102-3 now. Notre Dame is the only team to play close in the third, as that one was 7-3. In the other six games, Georgia’s winning the third by an average of about 16-0.

Does it worry you that Notre Dame is the only competitive team we have played? And that since then we have gotten really beat up?

No. I’ll leave the worrying to you.

Look folks, I am as excited about this football team as any I have seen since that year that shall remain nameless for kharmic reasons. In fact, God Help Me, this team could be better than that one…overall. But that remains to be seen.
Pat Dye (Pet Dah) called this part of the season the Amen Corner (Cohnah).
Its that part of the season when legends are made and hearts are swelled with pride or broken and stomped flat.
The point is that this may be a great team, but we don’t know yet, and we won’t know till January 9, 2018.
Because nothing else means anything.

Don’t lose perspective. At some point you should step back and enjoy the season so far, if this team wins the east and wins the conference you’ll be looking back and saying “damn, they were good, I could’ve enjoyed all those games”.
Keeping perspective works both ways, don’t forget to enjoy it and don’t forget to take opponents seriously.

I don’t agree with your last two statements, for two reasons.(1) We’ll know 12/2, and even a loss in that one doesn’t mean we aren’t a great team. (2) I would say (myself included) handling our business through the season and ending up in Atlanta, even at 10-2/ 11-1 or especially 12-0 through the regular season, is a quantum leap in performance over what we have seen the last few seasons. That means something to me. Would I like to see the natty! Hell yeah! But I’m sticking to my guns: No faceplants, win against good competition, pound the 4 hated ones. I’ll consider that meaningful accomplishment. YMMV.

An SEC Championship is meaningless considering what we have (not) accomplished the last 12 years? Hmm.

Eventually you are what your record says you are. Nobody has faced a gauntlet of Top 15 teams all year, it just doesn’t happen. A “competitive” team is all in the eye of the beholder. Georgia Tech, Florida and South Carolina would all say that Tennessee “is a competitive team.” LSU (who just beat Auburn) would say Mississippi State sure as hell is competitive. Just because we smash a team doesn’t make them not a competitive team.

Yeah, and they all “give us their best shot”.

as much as we like to rag Tennessee, they beat a pretty good Tech team and their other losses were a hail mary, and a game with a first time starter at QB that they had a chance to win until Butch butched.
We’re the only team to kick their ass.

Because being 7-0 now is not any better than 4-3…give it up.

Just an “FWIW” moment:
Drew Lock has the highest passer rating we have seen thus far @ 146.92 and ranks 30th in the nation.
Kyle Shurmur passer rating is 138.60 and ranked 49th in the nation.
Jake Bentley passer rating is 138.56 and ranked 50th in the nation.
Felipe Franks passer rating is 131.05 and ranked 66th in the nation.
We aren’t seeing Tom Brady out there. Stocks are good. The sky isn’t falling.
Our boy is ranked 6th in the nation with a 170.42
Maybe this kind of puts things in perspective

Fromm is performing well and you can’t argue with the record. But we still haven’t asked him to do a heck of a lot and he has that freshman habit of staring down his intended receiver. The defense looked over matched on passing plays much of the first half. So, I’m still concerned. Not as much about Florida but Auburn and anything that might happen beyond the regular season. Sorry, I grew up with Munson.

A few thing.
I walked through lot 5 around 1pm and didn’t see y’all. I’m sure you were right in front of my face, my father always said I was terrible at finding things.
I would have liked to see how well Mizzou’s shuttle pass scoring play would have worked with Natrez Patrick in the game as opposed to Juwan Taylor (who was out of position and whiffed the arm tackle).
Forgive me if this has been discussed, but I found it curious that Eason never entered the game, especially in the 4th quarter when the outcome was no longer in doubt. Is this possibly a sign that he might be trying to save his eligibility for an inevitable transfer? Is it even possible for him to get this year back? I’ll hang up and listen.

See, that’s the amazing thing to me about some of these trolls. It boggles my mind that anyone who has such a poor grasp of spelling, punctuation, grammar, mechanics and syntax would be “clever” enough to even try and post under multiple handles to sneak in.

Does he get to say” “No thanks, coach, don’t put me in, I want to save my eligibility even though I’ve already played this year after the injury.” Far more likely that, as dirty as Mizzou was playing, they didn’t want him going out there and getting his knee targeted, but it could have been anything; I didn’t ask Kirby. 😉

Doubt they were worried more about Eason’s health than Fromm, I guess my real question was about the eligibility.

I wondered the same thing. The only thing I took away is that Fromm is “the guy” going forward. I’d love to see Eason getting some time just in case we need him, but we missed two good opportunities for it (Vandy and Mizzou). The next five games, we don’t need to mess around with in-game “practice”.

Glad to see someone mention Mizzou playing dirty. The refs sure did not stop them.

Don’t see a scenario where “saving ” a year of eligibility for Eason benefits anyone, except maybe us if he were to unlikely stay five years. If he gets a med RS, then he has three years left. If he were to transfer, he would burn a year sitting out. If he plays more this year then decides to transfer, he can use his redshirt year while sitting out. Just about any way you slice it, he’ll have three years to play two.

Eventually, you are what your record says you are. We are quickly approaching that point. But I’m convinced that some of yall will lament the weak competition even if we go 12-0.
In fact, I think we got off really easy scheduling-wise by not having to play Georgia this year.
