Cocktail Party game day post

I’m getting ready to head out shortly, but thought I’d get the obligatory game day bloviation out of the way first.

Quite simply, Marcus Spears has this exactly right:

“That’s the key to the game,” Spears said. “The front seven for Florida is probably the most important unit in this entire game because if you don’t stop Georgia from running, they’re going to beat you. It doesn’t matter what you do.”

Teams haven’t figured out how to stop Georgia’s smashmouth run game.

The Bulldogs rank 10th nationally and second in the SEC in rushing offense, averaging 282.9 yards and 3 touchdowns per game on the ground. Over the last three games — wins over Tennessee, Vanderbilt and Missouri — Georgia has averaged 362.3 rushing yards per game and had 4 rushing touchdowns in each.

Seniors Chubb and Michel are the only running backs from the same school ranked in the top 10 in the SEC in rushing yards per game. Chubb ranks third (98.29 yards/game), while Michel is eighth (82 yards/game).

“When you think about how you stop this team, you stop the run and you put it in Jake Fromm’s hands,” Spears said. “And with this [Florida] secondary, you’d probably like your chances.”

If the Gators can’t run and can’t stop the run, barring some really bad turnover luck on Georgia’s part, it’s hard to see a path to victory for them.

That being said, that’s been the easier said than done approach for every team that’s faced the Dawgs so far, with little success.

Today is about paper — what the teams bring to the table in terms of 2017 performance — versus history.  I don’t minimize the latter; as I posted earlier, that’s Kirby’s big test today.

I think Georgia gets ‘er done today.  What say you?

Any Dawg would be nervous, as I am. But I’m also confident we’ll see a convincing victory despite my nerves. It really is a test, as you’ve said the last two weeks, Senator.

GATA, Dawgs. Bring back a victory, Senator.

You hit the nail on the head. Watched highlights of 2002 game last night, turnovers and Penn Wagers, nuff said.

Penn won’t be there today, hallelujah!

I don’t think the refs screw with the Dawgs today. Too much riding for the conference. Remember, Wagers got fired because of his treatment of Georgia. The other refs know that.

Is this actually true or just a guess? After all, many other teams hated Penn as much as we did as well, and he had some horrid calls in non-uga games.

Agree, overall incompetence was the factor. The anti-UGA bias may have been the best examples of his lack of professionalism though. Surprised the ACC picked him up so quickly, surely they had to deal with why he left the SEC. Just a small person and a bad egg. If Shaw looked closer, there are other who should be demoted, or let go. No excuse for accepting this level of officiating, hold them accountable….and that begins with Sankey and Shaw.

The call that got Wagers fired was the no-call on the last play of the Georgia-Auburn game in 2013 when an Auburn LB ear-holed Murray in an obvious targeting infraction. It was the ref’s (Wagers) responsibility to make that call and he didn’t. When asked why he didn’t throw a flag Wagers told a reporter post game that Murray was’t a defenseless player. Here Morehead lodged a formal protest with the league office and got into it so personally that Mike Slive told him to “quit whining.” Very quietly over the off season Wagers was told to retire. They let him have a final season then Wagers was gone. Now Wagers has resurfaced in the ACC. You connect the dots yourself.

We also need to watch for the usual UF 2 yard gains that become 3 yard gaines, and the automatic UF first downs.

  4. This game represents a potential identity change for the football program. A chance to turn away from a miserable past of inexplicable underachievement against its most hated rival, as well as a shift in direction towards consistency and higher expectations. I sure hope the change is a positive one.

The gator defense is getting credit from years past. They aint that good this year. I like our offense doing whatever the hell we want to vs them. Run or pass.

Their front 7 is still really good, their secondary is overrated.

Either way, it’s kind of like Missouri with their front 7 (with a secondary that is much worse though). Georgia’s OL has been much better, Georgia’s OL just does well at sealing and holding blocks, not absolutely mauling people. Florida’s front 7 is big and capable of playing well.

The Florida front 7 is going to be a problem for Georgia in run blocking. It will be more a game for Sony Michel/D’Andre Swift than Nick Chubb.

This is a game where it’s paramount to get out in front and gradually build on your lead. If we do that, no doubt UF will quit and we most likely will pour it on. But if we let them hang around in the 2nd half, then things could get really interesting, and we will all be on pins and needles.

When it’s all said and done, however, I’m predicting a close game up until half, with us pulling ahead for good late in the 3rd quarter and going on to win 31-16.

Oh, boy is FSU a mess. 2-5 and losing to Boston College by 32 points is insane. And remember FSU was a top 5 team to start the season.

I’m taking my 5 year-old son to the game. He could barely sleep in the hotel last night he was so excited. Got me up at 6 this morning itching to go. Hope we get a win today for him. And, maybe for Daddy Dawg too!

As for the game, this is a business trip for UGA. Ignore the bullshit distractions from the gators. Don’t bite on their taunting. No personal fouls. Keep it clean. And CLEAN their damn clocks.

In the words of Erk on that epic post from senator B earlier this week… Screw Florida and the mule they came in on. Let’s get this done today boys.

From the first play of the game, these Dawgs need to play like crazed wild men.
Snuff Florida’s little flame of hope out early.
Stomp a mudhole in their asses and make them want to get on the mule back to their stinkin’ swamp at half time.
They’ll be an ass whoopin’ in Jacksonville Florida today. Florida is to furnish the asses and UGA will provide the whoopin’!

If we don’t beat them by 30 I’ll be disappointed. I’ll live, but I’ll be disappointed. It’s not just about winning one game which we did in ’97 and 3 times in the 2000’s. It’s about playing at our level against this particular team. Because that’s been the problem. Winning by 1 point would only say that Florida is so bad that they let Georgia (Georgia!) beat them. Who really are we ….same old or new Georgia? That is the question today.

Florida has 9 players suspended, including their top receiver and running back. Florida’s best defensive lineman is out with an injury. Florida’s starting QB is out with an injury and they may be starting the third stringer because the second string guy is so bad. The head coach has been answering questions about his weird death threat comment all week. We are only missing a very good linebacker that is suspended. Please no Georgia turnovers or big special team plays by Florida. 24 – 10 good guys but I hope you guys predicting a massive beat down are correct. It has been way to damn long.

While capable of a larger victory, I think they contest early off of pure energy, and a conservative game plan. UGA with a solid win, I think about 27-10. Would take that, with no injuries and stroll on down the road.

The lizards want to stop the run, so here’s to hoping that we see some crossing routes and seems to Nauta and Werner. Not sure there’s a Lb or safety in the state of FL that could cover those 2. After that, I would like for them to be finished off with a heavy dose of Chubb & co. Make it happen Cheney.

Not real happy with the way we handled that last UF punt/UGA possession. CKS went CMR for a few minutes there. But I’ll be happy with a 21 point halftime lead.
But we definitely left some points on the field in that second qtr…
Look out for the onside kick to start second half.
