You can leave your hat on.

These are the morons who will decide who plays for a national title.

For those of you wondering about bias in the room — nobody is allowed to wear their school logos in the meeting room. They also symbolically “check their hats at the door,” a tradition started by former committee chair Jeff Long, who is still on the committee. They were all given hats with their names on them on Monday.

As if you magically shed your biases merely with a clothing change.

I guess it’s comforting to know they won’t be wearing somebody else’s hat.

Still don’t understand the logic behind the committee. BCS rankings are perfectly sufficient for choosing 4 teams as opposed to two. NCAA always has to try to find a way to screw it up.

On another note, I heard a quote from Cowherd this morning that is potentially bad for us. He said, basically, if we’re trying to figure out who the best team is then what’s the point in allowing both Georgia and Bama into the playoff if they’ve already played on a neutral field to end the season in Atlanta? If I take off my proverbial Georgia hat that actually makes a lot of sense considering that Penn State and Ohio State are in the same division and won’t meet in the Big 10 title game (assuming they both win out and two Big 10 teams get in), plus Penn State only lost to Ohio State by one point on the road. This scenario to me makes a lot more sense that Notre Dame jumping us, ESPN marketing implications aside.

Yeah, that’s what I’m saying. Cowherd had Penn State, Ohio State, SEC winner, and Clemson so ND would be out as well. Makes sense to me (although I don’t think Clemson is nearly as good as last year and could get jumped by Oklahoma if they win out).

Neutral site game the end of the year as opposed to Penn State losing by one point on the road in the middle of the season. I see the distinction, and I think it’s valid. There is precedent for that as well. Heck, Bama lost to LSU AT HOME in 2011 and still made the BCS title game.

I’m also of the mind that division titles are essentially meaningless if you only have one loss which is why I had no problem with Ohio State getting in last season or Bama/LSU in 2011. The solution is simple: just don’t lose, and if you do, make sure it’s not in the SECCG. IE we could lose to Auburn, and likely still make it in if we beat Bama (or whoever makes the title game).

I guess in the end the rationale is a neutral site changes things and if OSU meets Penn State again it would be at a neutral site.

It probably is, but hairs are split at the end of every season, and everyone has an agenda so the question is, who can best support their position? I think Cowherd has done the best job thus far. Makes a lot more sense than ND jumping us after we beat them on the road imo.

How could anyone know if Georgia or ND is better than any team in the B1G if they don’t play each other? All I’m saying is, I don’t see the point in two teams playing on a neutral site twice at the end of the season, and that would apply to any conference. It just doesn’t help with the process of finding out who the best team is imo.

                • Again, maybe I don’t understand the argument you’re making here, but it seems to me all Cowherd does is preemptively strike consideration of that very question on the basis of a flimsy rationale.

I suppose it’s easy to say the Big Ten deserves two teams in the field if you start by precluding debate of whether other one-loss teams are better.

I don’t think he’s precluding the debate, I think he’s made his decision and moved on from it, just as you clearly have.

Ultimately I think we can all blame Roy Kramer for starting the Conference Championship game fad, which has left us with these useless divisions, and often meaningless money grab games at the end of the year.

Don’t get me wrong, I won’t be mad if Georgia makes the playoff in the event they lose to Bama, but you won’t catch me arguing in Bama’s favor if Georgia beats them.

Let’s put the UGA/Bama angle aside, there are several weaknesses with Cowherd’s top 4. If Oklahoma wins out they have a better argument than either tOSU and Penn St having beaten tOSU at the Horseshoe. What if tOSU or Penn St lose to Wisconsin in the B1G Championship? Does the school that didn’t go to the championship still get to go to the playoff? Should a school be punished for going to the conference championship? (If no that would be a bit of a double standard against the SECCG loser) Also he has Clemson as his number 4, Clemson with a loss to Syracuse plus playing three common opponents as UGA, two at home while UGA plays two on the road, with one loss to Bama has to stay home? Is Clemson getting a mulligan because they lost their starting qb because we did too so shouldn’t we get more credit for overcoming a loss at such a key position? Ultimately, I can understand only having one SEC school in but not putting in two B1G schools.

We all know that an early loss doesn’t hurt much, plus Oklahoma is a quality loss and they lost to Iowa State so Oklahoma would need to win out and they would also need to Iowa State (who has some bad losses) to win out in order for that stance to hold up.
Obviously a Wisconsin win in the title game would change everything, but the assumption is that their success is fools gold resulting from a weak schedule and that they will not be winning the B1G.
You don’t get punished for going to a championship game, you get punished for losing it since it’s at a neutral site.
I agree with you on Clemson, I don’t think they’ll win out, but it’s pretty clear that their starting QB is a lot more important to their team than Georgia’s. In fact, Fromm over Eason has been a decided improvement from where I sit, so I think you’re comparing apples to oranges there.

I’ll agree Stoopnagle, as long as there are no one loss teams in that are not conference champs. I,E; Notre Dame. If there are not four unbeatens among eligible teams and you consider one loss candidates, ND should be out immediately, on win/ loss percentage.

Power 5 conference winners plus one “at large” bid determined by committee. 3 round playoff where 2 highest ranked teams get first round bye.

No one has a reasonable argument if they aren’t in the top 6. Regular season matters, conference games matters, conference championships matter, strength of schedule matters, Cinderella still has a shot, and a one loss conference loser still has a shot. Why? Because it will drive everyone outside the SEC and Big10 craaaaaazy, and the CFP committee wants a lot of buzz around the initial rankings and also….

Seems to be a double standard about having a loss and/or not winning your conference . One standard for the BigShit, another one for every other conference. Saddest thing of all is the historical record shows piss poor to unbelievable bad records of that “most favored by espn” conference and teams from the Southland.

They changed the selection process from the BCS for the CFPC because Alabama and LSU played for the championship and both were from the SEC. Now as much as I would love our team to get a chance, if they lose the SECCG we will be bowling in our usual spot unless the selection committee throws us a bone. The committee may pick 2 from the B1G because ESPN wants the eyeballs but they will not pick two from any of the other conferences. Something’s change with the times but the B1G time being over rated is not one of them. My picks SEC champion, ND, tOSU and Clemson, Pac12 and Big12 left out. Don’t like it but it’s going to happen.
