So now we’re going to hammer Drew Lock for stupid stuff he tweeted in his eighth grade year in middle school? (h/t)
Jeez, if that’s now the going standard for living the righteous life, there aren’t going to be enough hours in the day to rake every guilty soul over the coals. People do change from being idiotic fourteen-year olds, I’ve noticed. Maybe cutting some folks a little slack might be in order. Just sayin’.
That being said, kids, the next time an adult tells you to be careful what you post on social media, maybe you should think about paying attention.
What an insufferable douche the anonymous guy who dug those up and gave them to the paper is. Lock must have stolen his girlfriend the next year in the ninth grade.

I would probably be considered an SJW by some of the commentariat here (a badge I wear proudly), but even I find this recent trend of digging up stupid things that guys said when they were teenagers (and, in this case, when Twitter was a completely different animal than it is now) to be really ridiculous. Most of us probably said stupid, sometime racist, sometimes hateful things when we were kids….my problem is with the people who never grew out of it.
And, by the way….I don’t really like Drew Lock, but based on this response he has a future in PR if football doesn’t work out for some reason. That was pretty much a master class in how to react to something like this.

Everybody does – and the irony is that a lot of the people doing the digging these days are the ones who throw around the term “SJW.” James Gunn, the director of Guardians of the Galaxy, was fired by Disney because Trump cultist Mike Cernovich went digging through years of old tweets because he was pissed that Gunn was critical of Trump. It’s gotten to the point where we can’t enforce any standard of decency because when we do, someone goes “OH YEAH WELL WHATABOUT_____,” insisting we push the envelope to include something “the other side” did, until everything is completely and totally fucked for everyone.

Of course I agree in principle, but I also believe private business has the right to choose who they want to represent their brand. The villain isn’t the employers firing people – it’s us. The notion that we can either hold everyone to an impossible standard of moral righteousness, or none at all. That’s why we have a President who is completely morally bankrupt while others in the private and public sector are crucified for failing to be perfect. The center cannot hold.
LikeLike
In fairness, we had a choice of two morally bankrupt candidates in this latest case. That’s a flaw in the system, but that’s another matter. I’m fairly certain that the only person Trump could have beaten is Hillary, and I’m pretty sure the only person that would make some segment of the population long for Hillary is Trump. Putting aside the tribal nature of politics where a decent number of people would have freaked the fuck out over anyone from the wrong tribe.
LikeLike
I think Hillary’s main problem was being unlikeable more than the substance, but I agree that she was poison as a candidate, for whatever reason you choose. Every Democratic nominee who has been personally liked since 1988 has won. The stiffs: Kerry, Dukakis, Gore and HRC all lost. (I would note that Gore and HRC both got more votes.)
Someone still needs to explain the freak out over Obama that has zero to do with his race.
I remember when he won. I told my wife that night: these people are gonna freak the fuck out.
And they proceeded to do just that. For me, the Tea Party and Trump are a reaction to Obama and it has everything to do with race.
I’m not saying every (or even most) Republican is a racist. I’m saying that the racists, and there are a lot of them in this country, vote Republican.

The Republican party catered to the racists to bolster their election chances during the Obama administration, and the racism consumed the party. It has zero to do with fiscally conservative governance anymore, it’s just straight ethno-nationalism with a good sprinkling of theocracy on top.

That’s baloney. He governed as a hard core liberal. Business owners were killed, absolutely killed by Obamacare. Anyone in the individual market that had to pay for their own healthcare came out way worse under that mess. Also, the Tea Party was more a reaction against Bush and Obama than just Obaman. It was all about the bailouts of the people who should not have been bailed out. Calling them racist is just an easy dodge of bad policy the Tea Party wanted to point out.

So unpopular and dumb that they came up with an alternative right? Better health care a a fraction of the cost right?
People like most of what the ACA does. That plan was a conservative think tank’s alternative to single payer. That’s the hard core liberal solution and the one I favor. Its just stupid to point to ACA as an example of “hard core liberal.” Its a moderate to conservative effort to:
reduce the cost of HC
decrease the number of medical cost bankruptcies
cover people who are difficult to cover so they aren’t as significant a burden on the taxpayers
Its fucking Romney-care. Remember when you nominated that guy? I do.
There should never have been a need to bailout Wall Street but if we hadn’t it would have made the Depression look like the fucking Garden of Eden. We were weeks away from empty grocery store shelves.
The Tea Party was a “re-branding” effort away from Bush because he was toxic after 8 years of dumb irresponsibility. I will remind you that their clarion call tho was “we want our country back” from the black guy. Just like its really Make America White Again.
You can deny that there are racists in this country but its a damn lie. They are loud and proud and numerous: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KHJlZyFxp88

Of course there are racist in this country. We see it daily with identity politics. I still hope that what MLK says will come true one day… you know, the idea about character instead of color, etc. Unfortunately, one party in this country tries real hard to keep color, race, etc. as a reason to discriminate. Identity politics are about as bigoted as one can get.
The ACA was clearly hard core liberal. That conservative think tank you mentioned actually threw away that idea, rightfully so, years ago. Not one conservative voted for the ACA and for good reason. As I stated, it has ruined the individual market. The sooner it is canned the better off many (not all) will be. The only people the ACA works for are those that are getting subsidized by the taxpayers.

As far as dredging up old stuff tho, I don’t necessarily have a problem with it if it’s part of a much needed process of reconciliation. But let’s not destroy somebody for youthful stupidity and indiscretion.
We need to constantly “own up” and confront and improve, individually and collectively. If we treat these things that way instead of being either defensive or righteously indignant maybe we could make some progress.

I’m not disagreeing. But the other side of the coin is the reticence to confront past sins.
While I agree that using past mistakes as a cudgel to beat people up is wrong, its equally wrong when people want to stick their fingers in their ears and scream every time slavery, segregation, ethnic cleansing of the native Americans, get mentioned. Both grace and acknowledgement of errors are essential to moving forward.
Its a two way street.
The problem is that there’s always some asshole trying to grab power by exploiting that tension instead and that forces people to choose sides.
LikeLike
The key issue is WHY one wants to confront past sins. The fact is that for decades, everyone acknowledges that slavery, land theft, etc., happened and shouldn’t have. If you want to use that to ensure that it doesn’t happen again, you’ll find no opposition. If you want to use it to argue that some demographics owe other demographics something, then you will. Is it racist to argue that a seventh generation descendant of a slave owner doesn’t owe anything to a seventh generation descendant of a slave? Of course not. But that’s exactly the argument that is made. Maybe in another 150 years, we can put slavery in the past. Probably not. But one can hope.
