A sign it’s time for the opening of August camp

C’mon, Kirby.

I love Campbell as much as anyone, but that ain’t happening unless Baker has an unfortunate run in with Mudcat’s car.

So in context, was Kirby basically saying that every starting job is up for grabs, including 18’s? My guess is that he wasn’t really commenting upon Baker specifically.

He wasn’t, of course. +1 for context.

He said it after a reporter asked about Fields beating out Fromm.

In a shocking turn of events, Kirby, a college head coach, is encouraging competition heading into fall camp.

Kirby is saying: you don’t have a job until I tell you, you have a job. Now audition.

Jimmy Williamson retired 6/30. Hopefully we’re safe.

  5. It depends on what your definition of could is.

    It’s possible but not probable … 😉

    • I loved his answer about the incoming freshmen and his push on them to contribute on special teams using Sony as an example of a freshman making a huge impact without being a starter. He’s starting the process to break them down to build them back up.

I watched a replay of the full presser … he’s damn good at the podium. Before he made a single statement, he called out Claude Felton as the “best in the business.”

    Pushing competition, good for him.

If anyone caught the SDS article, SMart was asked about Robertson and the UF transfers that were approved. He basically said it is a case by case basis and we can not assume anything. We are waiting to hear their decision.

Yeah, he was only suggesting that they aren’t keeping someone at a starting spot just because they started last year or are next in line, and they aren’t ruling someone out just because he’s a freshman.

IF Campbell prove to be the best, most consistent CB, then he would start, but of course, the likelihood of that being the case is small.

    • Serious question: When’s the last time a preseason all-SEC candidate got benched for a true freshman?

I don’t know. All-SEC candidates are All-SEC candidates for a reason (they tend to be really good). That’s why they don’t get benched. Only point is that he’s not getting the starting job strictly because he had it last year.

I have zero doubt Kirby fully expects Baker to “hold off” Campbell for the starting job.

And I know you were only asking. I thought I found a good one w/ Jeremy Johnson at Auburn (who everybody was handing the pre-season Heisman to based on next to nothing) getting replaced after a few games by Sean White. But, White was a sophomore.

What’s just one of the greatest changes from CMR to Kirby is the public acknowledgement that competition is taking place at each position no matter who started last year. Is some of it BS and lip service? Sure it could be. But at the same time, I don’t doubt for a second that Baker would be benched if Kirby really thought Campbell gave UGA the best chance of winning.

I believe it would take CMR several games before he pulled an starter. By then the damage would have already been done.

        • Not so sure about Richt on that. Willie Martinez, absolutely. But I remember back in ’07 that Richt basically forced Jancek and Martinez to start Rennie Curran, because all RC did was make plays.

Last year when Eason never got his job back?
(no, I don’t remember if Eason was a pre-season all-SEC candidate and yes I do realize there was an injury involved..still, it was remarkable)

As for Kirby’s answer..he couldn’t say “no”. That would have really caused problems. He could have given a long answer about how it’s possible but not likely..but the process doesn’t have time for that.

Why is it that with age everything goes by faster except the off season.

So true. These next few weeks in particular are going to crawl by, even with the daily drip of practice reports to satiate us. September 1st can’t get here soon enough.
