The last time Georgia lost this many starters off its defense — between the 2012 and 2013 season — the defense dropped from 18th in the nation in scoring defense to 79th.
The Bulldogs have a great deal more talent now than then, and one could argue a better coordinator with an established professional like Tucker.
One could argue, indeed.
Or maybe not…
Continue to read about this comparison. This is NOT the same Head Coach, DC or player personnel. Outside of the player loss, there is NO comparison.

I hope the days of us seeing our corners getting scorched are over.

Hopefully our guys will be facing that caliber of D in Jacksonville come October 27. Within a month of this unfortunate match, Grantham was off to a Louisville, bloviating about how his defense had “saved Georgia’s bacon” in the course of the 2013 season. Now he’s Florida’s problem.

That video will never get old, but my personal favorite example of Grantham’s defense would be when Chubb rumbled off that long TD vs. Louisville. The all-too-familiar pre-snap confusion of Grantham’s defense makes it so sweet.

FU has no idea of what 3rd and Grantham means. They will find out in short order this season.

Not watching that video, but if it’s what I assume it is, I hope we do the same thing to Grantham this year.

FWIW I thought and still believe that Grantham was as bad a DC as Willie Martinez. How Grantham has managed to continue as a DC at different major programs and actually get RAISES is incredible.

Grantham was vastly better than WillieMart, which explains why he keeps getting DC jobs from respected HC’s. Willie, meanwhile, has been the secondary coach at most recently Cincinnati and UCF. As someone posted the other day, Willie never met a swing pass he couldn’t stop.

Grantham was pretty good, actually, on first and second downs in my recollection, and even okay on some of the third downs, but, unfortunately not enough. Plus, I think he really doesn’t have as much personnel at UF as he had in other places and I know that’s hard to believe, but I think it is true.

I did some research on this after he left in 2013. His defenses beat up on overmatched opponents and sucked versus good teams (especially those with mobile QBs).

^^THIS^^. Against quality opponents Grantham was a bad DC, at least while in Athens (I suspect at his other coaching stops, too, but I haven’t followed it as I don’t really GAS about what he did there). There were so many epic failures on 3rd and 4th and long it boggles the mind.

How does Grantham get raises? Charlie Weiss syndrome.

Was there, too. Listened to the Georgia AD preach ‘continuity’ afterward.
Adding cold, wet insult to injury.

That team at the end of the year was not the same team as the beginning of the year. The offense had been decimated by injury by year’s end with some of our best players.

I know that is supposed to scare us but it makes me rather happy
1) The DC responsible is no longer in Athens
2) UGA gets to face that DC in the same stadium

2012 had no depth. So then the 2013 freshman didn’t pan out early, they were boned.
Not only do we have more depth now, but because of so many blowouts last year, a lot of guys who will be playing this year got good experience.

Odd article. First it infers we’re shorthanded, then Tucker rattles off the names of 5 guys who can play NT, with four of them having substantial experience. “Returning starters” as it’s usually defined doesn’t really apply to the Dawgs. Many of our returning D players saw loads of action last year (and the year before), and not just mop up duty.
Reading some of these articles would lead one to believe every other team in cfb had their lineups returning intact. After taking occasional looks at most of our opponents, I’d say they suffered as much or more attrition/graduation losses.
