As you wade into the Fabris Pool this season, you might want to take a peek at what Matt Melton writes about Georgia Tech’s ACC record under Paul Johnson — particularly if the Tech-Louisville game is a pick. (Hint: the piece is entitled “The Option: Familiarity Breeds Success”.)
Oh, and there’s this:
I neglected to include Georgia in the annual opponent table, in the interest of looking at solely ACC teams, but the Dogs’ inclusion would serve to bolster my argument. The Yellow Jackets have averaged just 23.6 points per game in their ten games with Georgia, including just 21.2 points per game after scoring 45 in their initial meeting under Johnson.
A bigger factor is their gross lack of talent. If they recruited Top 25 talent they’d be very dangerous, but that’s just not going to happen.

Imagine, Fields at qb, Holyfield at B back, Swift and Cook/Herrien at A backs.

And, of course, Paul the Johnson walks around crowing that he has a 3-2 record in Athens.

And 0-5 against UGA in Atlanta.

Love the partial stories that surround us everywhere, everyone has a slant, few dig for the whole story. We live in a world of headline readers, no wonder things are a cluster. And yes, that has always been a favorite play and the way fans view CFB, I give you FU fans, all born or awakened in 1990, as a proof source. At least everyone knows about this trick in CFB, not so much in the rest of our lives. Of course, many prefer the view from under the sand.
We had to work very hard to get GT 2 of those 3 wins in Sanford, yet those three are almost they have to feel good about against UGA in this century. Can you really delude yourself into feeling good about something that has gone so wrong for so long?

CPJ took a 15th-ranked team with Josh Nesbitt to Kansas and lost. Forgot about that one.

I think in some ways you’re better off defending that thing with a slow defense. Hard to run yourself out of position if you can’t.
Typing this reminds me of watching the WVU game at the Dome. We were flying around chasing ghosts all night. May have been better off with 3rd teamers.

Roquan disagrees. It’s all about discipline and knowing your assignment.
We were outschemed by WVU in the first half of the Sugar Bowl. WVU took advantage of numbers in the box until someone told CWM to make changes at halftime.

Roquan knows how that feels. See the 1st half of Rose Bowl. Oklahoma and WVU require eye discipline but if you haven’t moved out of position, you’re still there right? That’s all my point is. I saw Greg Blue running around like his head was cut off. He was a raptor chasing a rabbit. He was trying and flying around but he was running himself out of the play over and over again.
Georgia Tech is a different animal. The time we’ve struggled the most, like in the first loss, we played “assignment defense.” That’s a bad strategy. Why?
If you show who is keying who to CPJ, they just change the blocking scheme and house it.
Against Tech you have to kill the dive and play “spill” (the opposite of “leverage”) technique to the sideline. Make them go lateral and when they run out of room, kill it. Make the QB keep, then pitch and have 4 to 5 guys running into the flat. Can’t do that against Gus and OK and WVU because you’re too spread out and they can get vertical too many different ways.

Exactly assignment take away the dive, 1 on the QB and those on outside doesn’t immediately go for QB but stay out for the pitch, trust others to make their tackle rather than going for the gang tackle.

We also turned the ball over on offense.

A slow defense against Pat White and Steve Slaton seems like a ricky proposition imo.

From the article:
“the Yellow Jackets are a respectable 46-34 in ACC play under Johnson”
Well now we know how low the bar is.

An enigma..It would be better for UGA if GT wins that match with UL.
Who among us can actually pull for them to do it?
It would be hard for me to do. Maybe impossible.
And it would be even better if they could somehow knock off Clemson..
But this whole story boils down to this..Usually, if GT’s opponent has a good while to prepare, they’ll prevail. If they’ve seen the trip op enough, they’ll prevail. It took GT overtime to eek out a W against that horrible team up in Knoxville last year.

Petrino vs CPJ now there is an air strike game. If GT had any of their prior HC that from within my lifetime, I would pull for GT.

Tech lost to the Hillbillies in OT last year, 42-41, I believe. It was no cause to celebrate, as I was pulling for the meteor.

Yes..I stand corrected..it was such a shitty game I thought they both had lost.

had to double check….UT won that game! wow

Yeah…somehow it seems like they lost…they were so bad. But it put an end to Fish Fry’s claiming to own the SEC.

Fish Fry won, the players just didn’t execute his winning play call on the 2 point conversion.

How is the blocking rule going to hurt a team that seems to specialize in the crack back block?

Isn’t that just an SEC rule?

I’m not sure that holds up. Their 2008 season, which would be their best by this logic, saw them average 21.6 points against their divisional/permanent interdivisional opponents, their worst average under the genius. I think it is more the sample sizes. Their regular opponents get to play them in their worse offensive years as well as their better ones. Also one bad defensive performance doesn’t skew the numbers as much.
