“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
Ugh. I tried listening to his show once. Once.

Sadly the SEC Network (ESPN) pushed it to all of the SEC outside of Bama.

Of all the reasons to hate ESPN, this is certainly one of them.

Pawwwwl is the Kim Kardashian of sports media. Famous for being famous, even though nobody can explain what it is he actually does or why he’s important.

I am not a fan of his. But for all the radio and TV exposure he gets there must be hundreds of thousands if not millions of people who disagree with me and with all of you. Think about it.

Paul has successfully dredged the deep waters of SEC fandom and pulled out enough bat-shit crazy bullshit to entertain people. He has made a spectacle of this activity and is being rewarded by being singled out as someone who has his hand on the pulse of the SEC fan base. Bringing him to the forefront of the national coverage is a clear message from ESPN’s executives and reveals their opinion of us. We obviously want Paul don’t we? We all are like the callers to his show aren’t we? Thanks for the shit sandwich ESPN, but no, I’ll pass.

With Skip Bayless now gone to FS1, ESPN needs to raise Paul’s nationwide profile…another weasel who everyone loves to hate.

Hell no.
FUCK NO! In no way is any broadcaster comparable to Herschel Walker. Ridiculous people at ESPN.

No similarities, I agree. Herschel is the epitome of class. Pawwwl is the epitome of a penis with ears.

I mean, it is kind of funny to listen to Bama and Auburn fans be completely and utterly moronic. It’s particularly entertaining after Bama loses.
Not that I like any of it or think Finebaum is anything more than a troll.

Liebaum has a regional job with very little to no knowledge about football. Bill King on the other hand knows his shit and he is only on local nashville radio. I will never understand the trajectory of those 2 careers.

Oh, I don’t know about the personal insults towards Finebaum. He has promoted UGA much for the last two seasons and again for the upcoming season. Everyone not a listener hates his listeners and callers. So what? It’s like listening to a bunch of drunks getting on the phone to call in without any forethought and just to hear themselves “on TV!”. Just because that ain’t your cup of tea, don’t blame a guy making millions for ESPN with such a loose bunch of gum beaters. I can only stand about 5 mins when I tune in to watch the bottom line and to hear the latest news (or rumor) of the SEC. Mostly it’s done with the sound off to avoid his callers’ cacophony of Southern idiots who are the founding fathers of the Dunning-Kruger Effect.
Yep, Paul is a ‘Bama fan and he has been correct for the last 5 years. I like his choices this season and the fact that he has pinned Mullen and FU to the wall. Think not? Tune into Alligator Alley and pick your topic. I just read one where they are lambasting Paul more than is done here because of his criticism of FU’s recruiting and Mullen’s public horseshit party. They see him as favorable to ‘Bama and UGA.
I find his knowledge is about 180 from his callers. He has good depth of knowledge of the SEC and CFB and sometimes I’ve heard him correct callers in the limited time watching the show. When he hosts ESPN’s pundits and ESPN’s SEC pregame shows he demonstrates a wide knowledge and gets the most out of their comments, in fact, I enjoy the way he spreads things around at those times and has his share of self-deprecating humor which demonstrates to me that he doesn’t take himself as seriously as we do.
Yep, opinions vary and we all have one and we can agree that he hosts an offensive and embarrassing shit-show, but I rate Paul separate in the mind game. I don’t agree on all his pronouncements, but Paul has his opinions as well and he admits he misses the boat sometimes. He is as human as we are here today.

You misunderstand. I’m not insulting Finebaum. I’m insulting ESPN.

I didn’t misunderstand about ESPN and directed the off remarks there (the show), but some of the bloggers here took it personal for Finebaum and would have expected your comment to be aimed their way. Since you included photos, I understand why they thought you were aiming it towards Finebaum. You are a little off-target on the misunderstanding; the comments were for those anti-Paul bloggers here who misunderstood your comment.
I hope you aren’t relying upon me to straighten your misunderstandings here. 🙂

I’m really ambivalent about Finebaum. I actually like it when he has folks like Laura Rutledge, Marcus Spears, or Booger McFarland on. They all add some knowledge to the college football discussion. What I don’t like are Finebaum’s callers who generally are a bunch of idiots that like to yell at each other. These callers add zero to a discussion of college football and are downright annoying.

Pretty much where I am. I don’t watch the show, but when I watch SEC Nation on Saturdays, or see him as a guest elsewhere, he is about average for talking heads around al TV/radio. It is the callers that ruin it for everyone. Should have kept the “local” program local, it isn’t playing well outside the AU/Bama fan bases.

I agree on those three and their SEC knowledge, Marcus Spears being tops with his insights based on facts.

Finebaum’s callers basically amount to a white redneck minstrel show. And I’m not super thrilled that his rise to national prominence has been fuelled in part by people from other parts of the country laughing their asses off thinking we’re all like that.

The only time I willingly watched his show was after Bama lost to Clempson. It was hilarious! All the wailing and grieving! It did my heart good to hear them feel the misery of having a national championship torn away! Didn’t like it, did ja Bama? May you feel it again when we take it from you! GO DAWGS!

Hadn’t watched for a while, but curiosity got the best of me and I tuned in about 30 mins ago, just in time to hear Danny Sheridan predict that he not only had UGA in his top four, but also calculated that we would beat ‘Bama and Clemson to win the Natty This year. He backed it up with his brand of S&P, etc.
Immediately after, the idiots called in and began lambasting him for headline-reaching, sensationalism to get his name out there and just generally demeaned his prediction with no evidence of their own. They had no idea who Danny Sheridan is and thought he was a new pundit/betting line touter and Finebaum corrected one guy’s ignorance by telling him that Sheridan had been around in the business for over 40 yrs. Sheridan’s reply was :”Paul, whatever they pay you for this – it ain’t enough.”.
The down side is that Sheridan has now placed us on the spot and, even though he is not a gambler, he already has placed a small bet on us. Btw, Sheridan is a ‘Bama grad as well as a ‘Bama fan.
This will light up the boards tomorrow.

Thanks for the good perspectives and rational words on this issue Cojones. I’m not a fan of Finebaum due to the fact I think much of what he says is done to pander to his Alabama audiences. I have heard many things that he has said that do not favor AL or AU, but I couldn’t get away from the feeling that he was just stirring the pot so that the call in section of the show would be quite lively… I’m a fan of good, insightful conversation on all the SEC teams. Unfortunately, his callers and my lack of trust in his sincerity keeps me from listening to his show.

Nothing ruins any sports show faster than idiot callers. So true with Finebaum. 90% of his callers are semi literate trailer park dwellers. One of his main callers from Alabama once was unable to spell “disgusted”.

Some of y’all are focused on on Finebaum…. that’s not my issue here. My issue is ESPN anointing itself the gatekeeper of legends.
You can’t just decide that someone who works for you and dub them “legend” because you said so. Legends become legends because of the fans, and we drag the media along. Not the other way around.
