Here’s something for Todd Monken to work on.
Third down conversion rates, national rankings:
- 2017: 11th
- 2018: 10th
- 2019: 50th
Against conference teams, the Dawgs finished 71st. Against FBS teams, that 2019 ranking drops to 73rd.

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
That’s as much about 2nd down as it is 3rd. UGA was 11th in conference 5.4 yards on 2nd Downs.

Thank God we had an outlier against Florida.

Was it an outlier or is the answer simply, Third and Grantham > Third and Coley?

Nine straight times we had three and outs vs. Auburn at the end of the game.

I put that on Kirby going turtle after we had completely shut down Auburn for 3 quarters. There are still all the other games, though.

Not worried about it. I would imagine if you dig into the numbers that you’ll find that Georgia was in a lot more 3rd and 5+ situations than in previous years.
Georgia will be deeper at Wide Receiver this year, and the new schemes should prevent teams from loading the box. Add to it, a QB that will throw over the middle (getting back 1/2 the field) should help as well.
Many considered Robinson a bust. Most of his route running was over the middle. How much of that was a QB that treated this as the last option and how much of this was Robinson not open. If you are the 3rd check down running over the middle – your likely covered.
Not expecting LSU’S offense. But I do expect to see the pass setting up the run a little more and a lot more explosive plays that should open up the running lanes a little bit.

With UGA’s “OC’s” past history plus UGA’s roster at the skill positions should cause opposing dc’s to scan the horizon for potential trouble in spacing/match up issues, which in turn should open up the play book on all downs….(no, not 4th down, noooooo)

Entering this season we don’t have battle tested over several seasons tailbacks or the lineman to block for them as in recent past. We have reloaded with highly rated players. Right now we don’t know how good they will be. I would be extremely worried if Coley was still calling plays with these new players. The fact that he was an excellent recruiter and still got run off makes me believe Kirby has seen the light.
I believe the days of loading the box against UGA and not being made to pay with points are over.
I believe Kirby has accepted that spreading the ball across the entire field is now required to get that NC that he craves. I trust he is hungrier than we are for that championship. The relentless non stop recruiting effort he continues to push makes me believe the best ever run in UGA football has just begun.
