Stay classy, Greg.

Who knew, after ten years of watching the man work, that what really chaps Greg McGarity’s ass is the SEC postponing a game because the opponent can’t field enough players to play?

Georgia athletic director Greg McGarity has built a reputation over the past 10 years for being a kind, gentle man who doesn’t get angry.

That changed quickly on Friday.

“I don’t take things personal, but when our institution suffers, it upsets me greatly,” said McGarity, fuming at the news that Vanderbilt won’t bring a team to Athens on Saturday for the Bulldogs’ scheduled Senior Day.

“When something effects our school, it’s extremely frustrating.”

… The Bulldogs fans, players and players’ families were furious.

“They should be angry, and we’re angry, too,” said McGarity, who will vacate his post as AD on Dec. 31.

“It’s just extremely frustrating and extremely disappointing, especially if the game on the 19th can’t be played, and that’s what we fear.”

The suspensions of Green and Gurley didn’t move him publicly.  The SEC dicking Georgia on the schedule with Auburn didn’t lead him to express any open frustration.  In fact, I can’t think of a single other incident that’s happened over the last decade that’s made Greg McGarity angry.  Which, I guess, is something that separates him from most of the fan base.

And there’s nothing like throwing a cheap shot while you’re at it.

It’s a realistic concern when one considers how uncompetitive Vanderbilt has been in football over the years, and the institution’s lack of commitment to the sport.

The Commodores lost 41-0 last Saturday at Missouri, and reports surfaced players were threatening to opt out on the heels of Vanderbilt utilizing a female as its kicker.

“Hopefully Vandy will be prepared to play (Dec. 19),” McGarity said without much conviction.

Look, I get the frustration.  Georgia was lined up to smack the worst team in the SEC today and that’s been postponed or worse.  I get it.  But you don’t take shots at another school like that.  It’s the tail end of a season plagued by a pandemic.  Should you really be surprised when something like this happens?  Not at this point, anyway.

It was classless and drew the proper rebuke from his counterpart at Vanderbilt.

And it seems that even McGarity realized he let his mouth run a little too far.

Right now, at least, Georgia still has two games left to play.  Let’s hope the football gods ignore Greg’s outburst.

But both McGarity and Smart understand that there’s some good fortune involved in it. Smart has stated on more than one occasion that his team has been pretty lucky to avoid outbreaks and contact tracing issues. He has also praised Ron Courson, Georgia’s Senior Associate Athletics Director of Sports Medicine, for his efforts and plan.

Those hoping to hear or read scathing comments from McGarity, who will retire at year’s end, are probably going to be left wanting. There’s nothing easy about what the Bulldogs are dealing with right now but there’s a reason he will avoid pointing fingers. UGA could be next. “It all may fall apart tomorrow,” McGarity said.

To me, the question is….how many did they have that could have played?

MSU fell below that threshold and decided to show up & play.

Yep. Might as well play this one and get it over with if you’re Vanderbilt. I’m sure they could always bring some starters off their equestrian team to fill out the roster if necessary.

      SC was short too.

Yep….just think that program is in complete disarray. Players opting out, firing a coach, girl joining the team….not that there is anything wrong with it. Thinks some of the players have issues with it though.

Still wondering where she dresses out for games.

Nonetheless, if I had to guess……they had enough to play. Probably just didn’t want to risk further embarrassment. Canceling at the last minute has a bunch of folks upset.

But if SC and MSU could do it, Vandy should be able to….if they had anywhere close to the number.

Love Vandy, ex finished there with a PhD…they were good to her. Great school……but I wish they would either give football up or join another conference.

No matter the coach, they will still have the issues of the last one until they start making an investment in their football program. They have been left FAR behind.

If it’s really a COVID problem for Vanderbilt that is keeping them from playing, I agree with you. But I’m having a hard time believing it’s a COVID problem that is keeping Vanderbilt from playing today. If it’s just a cover for their players not wanting to play after getting their asses kicked up and down the field and their coach getting fired, he’s right to be angry. They just made a bunch of extra work for McGarity’s people through no fault of anyone in the UGA program.

Vandy had a game postponed on Oct. 12th. And because of Covid. This was before all the non-Covid reasons people are rushing to believe are the cause of this most recent postponement.

Aren’t the same reasons that led to the 10/12/20 postponement a reasonable explanation?

The other factors may have had marginal significance, but like I said, Vandy was here two months ago with Mason in place and no girl on the team.

Rushing to believe ? How about all but confirmed. Dude, a recent team captain went on Nash radio and said there were people opting out left and right because they let a player who had been with the team for 5 days lecture the team at halftime. Vandy has shit down their own leg over this and frankly they deserve to be scolded harsher.

Nothing Greg McGarity said was out of line. Fuck Vanderbilt.

          Whats his name?

I’ve googled this and all I came up with nothing but rumors spread by incels who are apparently mad that a girl kicked a football.

        • If it’s true that Mason let a player regardless of male or female who had been with the team for 5 days speak at halftime, I can understand why a number of players in the locker room walked out. You pay your dues to get that kind of opportunity to address your teammates.

TonyB., if in fact this is because of the girl, with or without the lecture, what does this say about the whole Social Justice thing?? They(along with the whole NCAA) grandstand the whole BLM issue, but they won’t stand for gender equity???? Can you spell hypocrisy???

It’s not about a girl… it’s about having a “prop” issue with a person who has been on the god damned team for all of a cup of coffee. Letting that person grandstand and shit all over the rest of the team.

Plenty of girls are capable of being place kickers and plenty of them are probably less physically vulnerable to injury in the course of an ordinary football play. I happen to think this one sucks as a kicker and hopefully we get to find out… but that’s not the point. The point is Vandy is a joke and this young woman’s self-awareness is around -50.

Does anyone know how this affects the revenue that UGA or the SEC gets from ESPN. That might be a clue as to why McGarity is so upset.

Also, maybe McGarity should be upset about US not being competitive in loses to Bama and FU.

I think GM is on point.

It’s ridiculous for Vandy to cancel over COVID when the women’s soccer team is sitting at home twiddling their thumbs.

They could have fielded a team.

  5. If the decision not to play is driven by virus cases, I have no problem with the decision not to play. Otherwise, I would assume they could play between scholarship players and walk-ons.

I give the Pirate props for playing with a smaller than necessary squad and playing well.

The only thing that makes sense is if Vandy is hoping the game ultimately gets canceled. That would be a logical play. Otherwise, they have nothing to gain by deferring the game.

His anger seems really manufactured to me. As the Senator pointed out, where was all that fire throughout the rest of his tenure? Of all the things to get angry about, too. Everyone knew at the beginning of the season that cancelled/postponed games were likely. The anger has no substance behind it. Good try Greg!

Has MG been keeping company with Herbi and Dabo?
I think UGA should offer to play the second team only if Vandy will come down and play on the 19th…and in the meantime, bestow the honor of “Coach Emeritus” on CMR and invite him to coach that game while Kirby goes ‘crutin.

I’m wholeheartedly happy with the change. It was time and it’s been pretty good. But I’ll always have a respect and love for the man who was a DGD. My comment was mostly in jest of the situation of what to do about Vandy.
(how about Vince, Ray, Jim and Mark coach one qtr. each?)

McG’s false umbrage is pathetic. The dude had a decade to represent the G. No one can argue that he was fiscally conservative, but he failed miserably defending the program in the eyes of the fan base. To start now…. whatever.

If I’m in charge at Vandy, I defer the UGA game because it’s a guaranteed loss, get healthy, and give Tennessee everything I have because they might win that one.

  17. What a surprise…

The useless, spineless, gutless McGarity showing his ass in public again.

I cannot wait for this grotesque, utterly worthless pile of garbage to get the hell out of town.

We have floundered far too long with a worthless AD.

Like the Senator said, where was this guy’s balls when AJ Green and Gurley got reamed by the NCAA? My roommate when I was at UGA Law was head legal counsel at UNC when they were dealing with their recent scandal. They told the NCAA to pound sand and look what happened: nothing. The NCAA is a paper tiger and yet they still managed to send McGarity cowering into the corner wetting himself.

Where was McGarity when Auburn DOUBLE F’D US, with us playing @Auburn 2 years in a row and then moving the game from traditional November to garbage September? Back in his corner in a puddle of his own piss and tears.

Goddamn McGarity sucks sooooooooooo much. Get him out early… like… NOW please.
