I’ve made a concerted effort not to rain on Josh Brooks’ parade since he took over as AD, but then he goes and says something like this:
“Before you can truly evaluate any coach, you have to evaluate yourself internally as an administration, and make sure we’re doing everything in our power to help them be successful,” Brooks said. “A lot of times we want to point the fingers at others, but I want to tell everyone that it all starts here in the administration.
“I’ve talked about wanting to win a championship in every sport that we sponsor, 21 sports, so it all starts with, are we doing everything we can to give them a chance to be successful with their conference peers and national peers.”
If that sounds familiar, it’s only because it should.
McGarity, who played and coached tennis at Georgia and worked in its athletic administration before leaving for Florida, said “there is nothing greater than being part of championships. That’s why we do what we do.
“At the end of the day,” he continued, “all the time you put in at the office, the fun comes when you’re competing for championships and you see what these coaches have done over a number of years to finally get to the top of the mountain and you’re able to be just a small piece of that.”
Yeah, that worked out well, especially the accountability part.
Let’s face it, the only results that really matter are the ones that show up on the bank statements. As long as Brooks follows in McGarity’s footsteps on that front, I predict a long career is in store for him. Plus ça change, plus c’est la même chose, and all that…
The talent in this state for mens basketball and woman’s soccer is comparable or better than any other SEC school. Both are likely top 10 states for high school talent respectively. Both of these programs dramatically under-achieve.

I am going to give Brooks the benefit of the doubt and see what kind of hires he makes and what kind of investment he makes in other sports. I don’t get the same vibe from him I got from ADGM. Maybe it doesnt matter who is AD if some other force is in the way. It is not a money problem.

He extended the baseball coach thru 2026 for mediocre performance. Georgia has enough talent in the state to be a top baseball school. 2 years on a row they hosted a regional and lost both times. Even Bobby Cox would say baseball is underperforming.

Yeah, this was the exact moment I knew Josh Brooks was a useless asshole.

Every asshole can be useful (?), if it walks like a BM, talks like a BM…it’s a BM, it was the hope for improvement/change…ain’t gonna happen, hear me now and listen to me later, evaluation is a useful tool, 90% of UGA’s current HC’s have a resume that has current, updated information/history/performance, not advocating firing HC’s, staff whomever, since BM hired Mr. Brooks that tells you all you need to know…he’s their guy..carry on young man…

What is the argument with Brook’s statement…that the administration’s support efforts should be examined before negatively evaluating a coach??

Nothing is wrong with his statement… its just that you know… talk is cheap

Spoiler: some other force is in the way.
The AD hasn’t had the authority to make decisions at Butts-Mehre since Dooley. That’s not changing for Brooks.

I guess we’ll never know how Brooks would’ve handled an A.J. Green or Todd Gurley type autograph situation now that the NIL is about to be signed. That would’ve been a good benchmark. I’m with argondawg. Let’s see how the man does over the course of the next few years. I mean, sooner or later a crisis (of varying degrees) is bound to pop up.

I wanted to hear his 35 minute interview with Mike Griffith to see if he would tip his hand on priorities and approach, but I only got through 5 minutes before I got sick of Mike fellating him and McGarity and had to turn it off.

Brooks seems to want to win badly. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt at this point. He’s going to have some difficult decisions to make with the gymnastics, men’s basketball, and soccer programs over the next year or so. He will be likely responsible for naming successors for some very successful coaches in tennis, golf, and, of course, swimming during his tenure.

If wanting to win was all it took, every school in the country would be tied for first in the Directors’ Cup. 😉

Same. You used the term Arch. I can’t tell you how many times I have heard it referred to as Arches. Makes me want to throat punch someone.

Just use the same thing I always say, “Well, you’re in the wrong place. Closest McDonalds is about two miles down Broad in the other direction.”

Got it – anyone who calls it the Arches should be told that’s a national park out west 🙂

Brooks seems orders of magnitude smarter and savvier to me than McG did, so I’m willing to give him a little time here.
That said, you don’t need to be deeply entrenched in the Athletic Department to assess which programs, and by extension, which coaches are underperforming.

But your assessments matter little…you’re not paying them and your job doesn’t hang on your assessment. It’s a job and I think Brooks will do a great job given his background, so from the distance of your keyboard it is quite easy to be opionionated.

Correct. Then again, by that metric, no one on this blog should have an opinion on anything.
I think Brooks is going to be pretty good too. That said, I’m sure he’s well aware of which sports need attention.

I really don’t like Josh Brooks. I’m gonna go on record and say right now I don’t like Josh Brooks at all.
What a useless douche.
Meanwhile, Hunter Yuracheck is winning national titles and has number one ranked teams in Olympic Sports over at Arkansas. ARKANSAS!!!
Fuck The Georgia Way and fuck the powers behind the throne who promoted this useless asshole to AD instead of even looking at a guy like Hunter Yuracheck.

1 point away from winning both the men’s and women’s ncaa track and field outdoor championships in 2018 is like so unacceptable:

I’m old enough to remember when AD Vince Dooley allowed our football team go to shit after he let HC Vince Dooley retire.
Beat Bryant pulled the same shit at alabama.
What happened to UCLA basketball when Wooden retired? AD JD Morgan that’s what! Just because Morgan was also there for all 10 ncaa bb titles from 1964 through 1975 doesn’t mean its not his fault that he didn’t hire another John Wooden when he retired in 1975
Who was Notre Dame’s AD when Rockne, Leahy, and Parseghian were winning natties? I’m sure they’re household names. You know because of their importance to on the field success.
Bud Wilksonson’s ad at oklahoma during the 47 game win streak must’ve been something eh?

So what do you think is an AD‘s responsibility for coaches’ performance? Should that individual be held accountable for the performance of the coaches he or she hires? Should that individual be held accountable for the overall performance of the athletics?
Brooks has a whole lot of difficult coaching decisions coming down the pike either for performance or retirements.

Over time, of course. But acting like the key to W’s is an AD is just wrong. Most of it is luck, both good and bad.
A lot has to do with program history and recruiting base.
Someone above suggested that Georgia is full of top female hs soccer players. It ain’t. Why should we have great women’s soccer teams without a recruiting base or history? Why wouldn’t the best players in GA want to go out of state to programs that have had a history of success?
I’d judge a UK AD for failing to hire a decent bb coach after awhile. But I also recognize that Mal Moore’s three hires prior to Saban kinda sucked: Francione, Price, Shula.
Did it prove that he couldn’t hire the right guy as AD?
Was he just lucky that the last guy wasn’t having success in miami AND he was lucky that he wasn’t the AD at Mississippi State?

I’m with you Corch, although I’m not quite willing to condemn Brooks yet. McGarity wasn’t the problem. McGarity was a SYMPTOM of the problem. We need to clean out that entire rat’s nest at B-M of hangers-on that are holding all the teams back. That means we need a President with the guts to do that. Jere isn’t that guy.

I’m with you on cleaning out the rat’s nest, but not with you on McGarity. That asshole was no symptom, he was very much an active participant in being the problem. And now Josh Brooks is equally as active in being the problem.

Where did McGarity come from? And where did Brooks come from? They didn’t materialize out of thin air. Somebody wanted them (or their ilk) to be AD. THAT’S where the problem is and it is systemic, not just one person.

Well, give this man the chairmanship of the Board of Trustees. He, in turn, will hire Yuracheck, Saban, and others and our athletic problems will be over. Maybe even venture into state and national leadership.

We had two top 10 finishes in the Director’s Cup standings during McGarity’s tenure. (nine years)
We had six in the ten years before he was hired.
Coaching changes don’t produce results immediately, but take the above for whatever it’s worth.

I was as big of a doubter on McGarity as anyone – but painting him and Brooks with the same brush is not only premature, but also avoids the fact that Brooks has been the biggest force of change for good in terms of fan experience at all UGA events that I can recall.
Brooks’ legacy will be judged on how he enables Student Athletes to leverage their NIL rights to make UGA a leader in getting these kids paid.
This is what is going to be driving recruiting in all sports in the next 10 years. He needs to find a way to have UGA leveraging the fact that we have the largest media market in the SEC in our backyard. This will overshadow any coaching decision he could make. July 1 is coming fast!

All BM needs to do is setup up moviephone line hosted by Cosmo Kramer. Just as informative as BM leadership has been. Press 1 if you really love how we painted the bathrooms as a response to ticket holders complaints about fan experience.
I’m giving brooks the benefit of the doubt under year 1, hopefully he can find some footing and make some true moves.
