Elite chaos

I was going to post something about how this chaos narrative that’s sweeping through our national punditry is undercut by Alabama’s and Georgia’s utter dominance through five games, but David Hale did such a good job of it that I’m outsourcing my post to his.

But the scariest thing about Saturday for the rest of the college football world was that it hardly seemed like the ceiling for Alabama and Georgia. They played dominant football while seemingly having more in the tank.

Indeed, you’re either elite or you’re not. And right now, that’s a particularly exclusive club with membership offers to just two teams.

I know it’s just the first week of October, but the irony of college football’s grand poobahs debating a 12-team playoff during a season that looks like the national champion should be decided in the SECCG is rich indeed.

It’s scary to think this UGA team hasn’t played with all 22 projected starters yet.

Drunken, what’s even scarier to me is that “0” played, blocked his ass off and they never threw to him!!

I don’t remember seeing him on a route, so I’m thinking he was healthy enough to stay in and block, but not quite ready to run downfield at full speed. Hopefully they work him up to that th next couple of weeks.

I sit pretty close to field level towards the West Endzone. At one point Darnell Washington and Brock Bowers were standing side-by-side in the huddle. It looked like an O-Lineman standing next to a Safety. That dood is huge. Like, gigantic.

Also scary that we haven’t even really had to use our red stadium lights on anyone in a night game. I was there for the game Saturday, and that was the fullest and loudest I’ve ever seen Sanford at noon.

So much for all the talk of the 3-2-6 defense, huh? How much of the playbook was used yesterday by Monken? Maybe 20%? We dismantled a team by running the same set of plays over and over again with a backup QB. To rub salt in the wound, they knew we were going to do that the whole 2nd half and still couldn’t stop it.

A team is going to have to score 35+ to beat us. Looking at the remaining regular season schedule, its hard to imagine a world where our defense gives that much up.

Shit happens of course and that’s why you play the game but, damn, we may be pretty good!

    • Yep, Biggen, well said. Monken seemed like once the game was in hand, no need to risk making a mistake to change momentum. When you have a defense like ours, you can just suffocate people.

More shock and awe on offense and anaconda defense with a lightning bolt from the special teams thrown in.

As much as a lot of our crowd does not want to admit it, he could not risk getting Bennett hurt either. Without him we would not be having these sunshine and roses conversations. Daniels if definitely the man IF he can stay healthy, but that is not looking too promising. Bennett has proven that he can get the job done in Daniels absence. Maybe Beck or Vandergriff could step up like Fromm did when Eason went down, but do you want to take that chance if Daniels AND Bennett are hurt? As it is we have an elite QB in Daniels and a good college QB in Bennett. Bennett is a DGD and does not deserve the shit that gets thrown at him on these boards.

The media starts a narrative to create buzz about a game. People want to sound like they know what they’re talking about so they repeat the narrative. That’s how you get a week’s worth of chatter about Barry Odum and his fearsome defense.

It does appear Bama is the only team that can match up with talent.
I’ll never trust ESPN and the playoff committee. Georgia almost has to win the SEC or they’ll say Georgia had their shot now give three other teams theirs. It’s the only fair thing to do.

That’s my feeling. If we’re both 12-0, Bama’s still in with a loss. If we lose, we’re sweating it out. Which mean we may have to beat them twice, while theoretically, they may only have to beat us in the playoffs.

Elite teams don’t get called for the same bad punt alignment three times. Glad we have things to keep us focused and improving, but that was worse than not being able to get a yard on Vandy the week before.

  5. The current claim is Cincinnati is the “proof” that playoffs should be expanded to be sure all conference champions are in with their win over Notre Dame. My response is…who doesn’t beat Notre Dame?

Definitely elite in the first quarter. Once teams find themselves down 10-14 after one quarter, it must feel awfully daunting to get back into games against our defense.

    First quarter offense
    passing: 33/40 (83%), 525 yards, 6 touchdowns, 1 interception, quarterback rating of 237
    Rushing: 249 yards, 5.3 apc, 6 touchdowns

    First quarter defense
    passing: 9/25 (36%), 111 yards, 0 touchdowns, 2 interceptions, rating of 57
    Rushing: 80 yards, 1.9 apc, 0 touchdowns

    Again,
No one (pundits) was talking about UGA.
The narrative was the pigs were back, Odom’s defense was better than sliced bread, their QB was a dual threat who could throw downfield, and their receivers were better than anyone else’s.
    PONTIFICATE NOW!!

3-5-3, 3-2-6…whatever you want to call it…if you can’t establish the line of scrimmage and prevent the offense from running the ball right at you, you’re going to get beat. As Gary Danielson said in the Bama game, the problem for OM or Arkansas was that you can’t just simply change your entire defense during the game and you’re not going to magically get tougher in-game.

Let’s not forget that Florida played well for a half against Alabama. I thought that performance, along with the fact that Mullen is the best play caller and QB coach in the history of the game, gave them an automatic bid to the playoff regardless of record. At least that’s what I read on the internet.

So 2 weeks before Jax we’ll have the sec east title wrapped up, or at least a mathematical tie for the division title? Has anything like that been done before?

The real irony is that the SECCG won’t mean anything other than seeding this year. And I say that as a staunch defender of “winning the SEC is the only goal”. We may whip Bama once, but either we do it in the last game, or we have to do it twice.

Even if we do it in the last game, we will probably have go do it twice. The only way we don’t have to beat them twice is that they lose in the first round of the playoff (unlikely)
      4 spot in playoff

ACC Champion-Not a chance in hell this year
      PAC 12 Champion-See above.
      ND- Not after yesterday.
      That leaves

BIG 12 Champion- ONLY if Oklahoma gets their head out of their ass and does not go down to Texas (I think Texas takes them this year)
BIG 10 Champion Either Penn State, Iowa, or Michigan. If the Champ is undefeated and one of those 2 only has one really close and it is to the champ then MAYBE they get 2 in. OSU is still in the hunt, but if they win it, the BIG 10 does not get 2 in with OSU’s loss to Oregon
CINCY- if they run the table it will be hard to keep them out this year. They are as good as any second tier team (any team not named UGA or BAMA)
SEC-Unless a meteorite hits the MB Stadium during the SECCG the SEC gets 2 teams in AGAIN and deservedly so. Both Bama and UGA will make the the playoff if the game turns out anything like most of their meeting with the winner having to do it in the closing seconds.

At this point, The DAWGS and the TIDE are head and shoulders above everyone else.

I don’t see our defense letting Nix run around for half an hour with the ball like LSU did. LSU can’t tackle worth a, well you know they can’t tackle very well.
