Observations from the 20, COFH edition

Really, it was the sense of familiarity that showed through Saturday — beautiful fall weather, the Atlanta skyline behind the stadium (it’s pretty cool, believe it or not), the lame signs hanging in front of the frat houses along the way to BDS (when “Roll Tide” is the cleverest thing they’ve got, lame is an understatement) and the tepid insults hurled after the game on the way back to the tailgate.  I’ve seen and heard it all before.

The Tech folks were subdued, to put it mildly.  I’ve seen more enthusiasm for a root canal appointment.  And, given the way the game turned out, their attitude was justified.

I’m used to seeing a lot of red inside BDS, but the level for this year’s game was almost shocking.

The place filled in a little more than that by kickoff, but the crowd was overwhelmingly red.  That, in turn, led to the two most amusing things on the day.  First, the Redcoat Band played loudly enough when Tech was on offense right up to the snap as a distraction.  Second — and it’s the first time I’d ever experienced this — the visitors’ crowd noise was loud enough to cause a false start penalty to be called on a Jacket offensive lineman.  In the third quarter.  With the score 31-0.  I don’t know if I’ve ever been more pleased with a Georgia crowd.

On to the bullet points…

  • Speaking of penalties, Georgia had none.  Zippo.  Nada.  Talk about playing with focus in a “meaningless” game…
  • Given the level of opposition, as well as the absence of commitment on Collins’ part, I don’t want to read too much into the day’s efforts, but I do have to take note of Bennett’s excellent game.  Saturday may have been his finest hour as a starter.  He distributed the ball well.  He clearly went through his reads and progressions.  The vast majority of his throws were accurate.  (The TD throw to Burton was flat out gorgeous.)  He threw well from the pocket.  Outside of his misconnects with Mitchell and the one batted pass, he was damned near perfect, in fact.  I know going into the SECCG we’re a little nervous with the memory of Stetson’s second half against ‘Bama last season, but he’s progressed so much since then.
  • If there’s one area of the offense I’m still a bit nervous about, it’s the offensive line, although I’ll admit that may say more about me than the players.  After all, Georgia did average over nine yards per play, which ain’t exactly shabby.  Bennett was only sacked once, and that was because he held on to the ball too long.  There weren’t many tackles for loss, either.  But one thing is very clear now:  this ain’t Sam Pittman’s o-line any more.  These days, Georgia’s focused more on pulling and creating mismatches than it is on flat out mashing.  I’m guessing that’s why Ericson’s managed to hold off Truss at right guard.
  • I don’t know how any team can defend Georgia’s 13 sets consistently.  With three tight ends, all of whom play well, Monken gets mismatches in the passing game and extra blockers in the run game.  If you’re a defensive coordinator, pick your poison.
  • Shit, did we love seeing some George Pickens, or what?  George may not be completely back from a physical standpoint, but mentally, he’s the old George Pickens.  At the end of one play when he was blocking downfield, he gave the Tech defender an extra shove, just to let him know he was back.
  • It was Kenny McIntosh’s day.  He broke off one big TD run — UGA’s longest run from scrimmage all season, I believe, and had a couple of good catches, too.
  • Zamir White had one catch out of the backfield as a safety valve that I mention because it looked like Tech simply forgot to cover him in the flat for what seemed like three or four seconds.
  • And I have to give Daijun Edwards a little love.  All he does is come out there when the game is long past decided and run hard and fast.
  • It will always be hilarious watching Tech’s managers on the side line jumping up and down with “Money Down” signs while their team is losing by five touchdowns.
  • Defensively — again, I consider the opponent, but that was a dominating performance.  Best of all, what really showed through was how much the shut out mattered.  I saw the pride in Nakobe Dean’s disdainful reaction in the second quarter when the defense allowed Tech to convert a third down.  And I saw it in the second half when Nolan Smith lobbied to go back in the game to shut down a Tech series.  (He helped do, that, too.)  Those guys are playing with a ton of confidence and desire to excel.
  • Jamon Dumas-Johnson is going to be impossible to keep off the field next season.
  • Robert Beal’s sack happened so fast I almost missed it.  Either he timed the snap perfectly, or Tech’s left tackle, whom I noticed complained to the refs about Beal being offside, completely whiffed on his block.  Or both.
  • I’m pretty sure Tech only had one play over 20 yards all day, the pass completion to the tight end whom Walker picked up just a little late in coverage.  And that drive was shut down just a few plays later.
  • Tech did next to nothing with its passing game, so kudos to the secondary for that, but special mention goes to Dan Jackson, who once again filled in productively for an ailing Christopher Smith.  He knows where to be on the field and he’s one of the best tacklers on the defense.
  • Special teams really didn’t have to do much.  Kearis Jackson had one nice punt return before he left the game with an injury.  Podlesny was perfect on the day.  Camarda’s one punt was meh, but his kickoffs were anything but.  Gibbs’ mishandling of the opening kick turned out to be a metaphor for Georgia Tech’s day.
  • As much as I harp on how good Monken is as a play designer and play caller, he deserves mention as well for his work as a position coach.  The improvement that Stetson Bennett has shown this season over last is remarkable.
  • Lanning just keeps doing what he’s been doing all season.  Three shutouts in one year is another thing that’s remarkable.
  • And, once again, I have to take note of how great a job Kirby Smart has done of keeping this team on track mentally all season.  A noon start, a game largely perceived as little more than a tune up before the SECCG and an opponent whose main strategy was to slow the pace of the game down to limit Georgia’s offensive possessions could have added up to a sleepy affair.  Instead, Georgia came out fired up, started fast and didn’t let up.  That’s what elite teams are supposed to do.

Now, to paraphrase Paul Johnson, these Dawgs have bigger fish to fry.  12-0 is great, and so is winning the East, but it’s time to go out and slay a certain dragon.

Stet started out 9 for 9 to (I think) 9 different guys which is other worldly. He was accurate and throwing on time. If he can keep that up, we’ll be ok.

  2. On that Beal sack, I actually rewound the game watching live to see if that left tackle who was complaining about Beal supposedly being offside had any gripe whatsoever. The answer was “not even close.”

The LT didn’t move, and Beal moved as a normal DE would — after the snap. It was more likely that the LT had the snap count wrong in his head and assumed it was on 2 instead of 1 — everyone else but the LT moved.

  3. Everyone forgets the defense allowed no points to UAB (late pick 6) and Charleston Southern’s one score was an absolute fluke. With a little luck, we pitch 5 shutouts. In today’s game, that’s Christy Mathewson type of domination.

Go Dawgs! I think your observations are on point. Watching on TV, Tech looked like a game against Charleston Southern or Western Carolina except we played with more focus. I believe on the Beal play the Tackle didn’t know the snap count as the ball was snapped and he failed to react. I don’t know if that was due to crowd noise or if the Tackle was more concerned with some gimmick or slogan than he was with blocking his man.
I feel as confident about Bama as I can be. Part of me thinks that they have been scheming for us since after the LSU game and that that justifies their poor play while another part of me believes that they are who they are and that we will be able to do to them what we have done to everyone this season.
The SEC Championship is very important to me as there have been long periods of time where we have had droughts so winning this game is important beyond playoff seeding and beating Bama.

The amount of red was insane – I am assuming the Tech student section below us was full (obviously couldn’t see it), but even the club area to the east and the seats around the 50 on the west side were half red. There was one section around the Tech 30 or so that I assume was the parents of the seniors, that looked mostly Tech, but that was about it….
I’ll admit it, I felt sorry for them – there was no juice or energy to the game at all, it felt just like going through the motions…

Tech student section was across from me and it was mostly empty, the band did seem to have all its members! ( surprised we didn’t get a few Redcoats in there)

I suspect we will see UGA go hurry up with the 3 TEs personnel when the opponent has the “wrong” personnel on the field.

Those three tight ends are really our ace in the hole. That, and Monken’s ability to truly take what the defense gives in just about any situation.

Do believe in his heart, the UGA football “OC” takes what is given, but when he passes or runs out the same formation, at times, he is really pressing the/his scheme/issue with the opposition d, that is confidence and the team shows that confidence (to bad this is the first year of this Offensive display)…😎

    • Agreed. I bet Monken doesn’t line up with less than 2 TEs the entire game.

I know there is finesse to calling a game, but honestly, wouldn’t it be malpractice to not line up Bowers and DW0 at the same time on almost every offensive snap?

        Like

        • I think so. I knew you need to spell them, so sub in Fitzpatrick. I just think bowers with Washington is the key. If you defend bowers as a TE, he can kill your linebackers in coverage. If they bring in an extra DB, we should be able to run some on the edge.

He’s the Swiss Army knife that I can’t recall us ever having. What Orion Charles and Nauta were supposed to be.

I too was pleased with the Dawgs’ effort on Saturday. They could have sleepwalked through the game and won by four TDs but instead were focused and won by six+. There were a few lapses but only a few and they didn’t have any bearing on the outcome of the game. Icing on the cake was the false start penalty on Tech – it’s now one of my favorite moments in the history of the rivalry.

I know what it’s like when they pull off the (very) occasional upset, so I don’t feel sorry for Tech. But it is pretty shocking just how bad they are. They’re in a great place for CFB, have decent recruiting potential, and play in a crappy conference (of course, one of the reasons it’s crappy is because they’re in it). They really ought to be a 6 to 8 win a year program. What we saw on Saturday was a team that would have a legitimately hard time winning 6 to 8 games in FBS.

He has all the personality of a gas station toilet seat but he really was the best they could hope for, wasn’t he? He’s no genius but did figure out how to steal a few games a year with that dickbone offense (or whatever it was called) he ran. Going back to a more conventional style of play sure isn’t working for them.

        Like

        • They needed another coach to come in there with a different dickbone offense…not trying to compete with the joneses with a more conventional style of play. Honestly, I’m no Nostradamus, but when they made the hire it was tough not to see them in the exact position they are in today.

It’s not going to have been a surprise. CPJ damned them to a roster of players playing a very particular outdated style. Going to be a decade or more to turn that around. I’m amazed they’ve won any games at all the last three years.

Guys sorry not to have been able to tip you off, my son informed me Sat morning that the line for over/under on GT points was 9.5! Easiest money I ever made! My boo game and Natty tickets were paid for by the bee’s, thanks Defense knew no way in hell they score other than a Charleston Southern fluke

You have to be a little concerned about this Saturday because, well, Bama. They looked like shit in the Iron Bowl and still won. However, we have played them to a ‘draw’ or better for 58 minutes twice in these type games, and we’re a better team than we were in those games. Many have made the point that Bama wins so much because they make you play to not lose and Mason and his defense fell into that trap last Saturday. We need hair on fire for 60 minutes and if we get that we’ll be alright, my inner Munson notwithstanding.

I’m pretty scared of Erickson trying to block Will Anderson.

Jones had a rough day on the outside too.

We have a fairly large segment of the “fanbase” that will bitch about Stetson no matter what. Saturday he could go 35 for 40 with 7 TDs and no INTs, but if we were to lose, they would blame him for the loss. They will point to those 5 incompletions as the reason for the loss even if 3 of them were drops right in the receiver’s hands and the other 2 were throw aways to avoid a sack. If we win, they will say that we won in spite of him not because of him. If he starts and we lose (no matter the reason), Kirby and Monken are idiots who should have known that the QB that lead them to an undefeated season was the wrong choice to start the remaining games.

Great day for the tech alumni and fans that sold from the looks of it 35,000 tickets at over $125 over face, say 4.2 mill or close to $100,000 a point!
Hope they do it again in two years it was a thing of beauty!

Seriously, after Tech at least an extra mil by having us there (10,000 Dawg fans in the upper deck at $100 a pop) and them being in such a financial bind, Josh should be on the phone with the Canadian today to tell them how much more they could make if they scheduled us in the Dome (and gave us a small cut, say 10%)!

All the BIG BOYS had close games (or loses) against vastly inferior teams this year other than the DAWGS. That points to coaching and senior leadership. Coaching ain’t all about X’s and O’s. It’s about managing the people as well. Being on go for every game is what has produced the narrative of “we haven’t played anybody”.

Mark Bradley made a great point (I know, I was shocked too) in his Sunday article about the sea of red. It was a good thing that all those Georgia fans were there; otherwise it would have been pretty much family and friends at that game for Senior Day.

You’re going to have to make sacrifices. But, here at Georgia Tech you will develop your skills on Saturdays over the next three years, instead of on the scout team waiting your turn for five. You have a chance to be part of something special here at Georgia Tech, or just another run-of-the mill Dawg at Georgia.”
