Don’t look now, but Georgia is seventh in the conference in total defense.
***************************************************************************
UPDATE: This, too.
Believe it or not — and the fourth-year coordinator’s detractors within Georgia’s fan base will likely be stunned by this revelation — Georgia has held all but one opponent (Tennessee) below its season average for total offense. And after yielding 400-plus yards in four of the first five games, the Bulldogs have held their last three opponents below the 400-yard mark and to an average of 68.5 yards per game below their season averages.
One loss for every Freshman Starter.
Brendan Douglas learning not to fumble has certainly hurt us.

Wonder where the defense would be ranked if we had not lost the whole receiving corps, Gurley and Marshall? Saturday proved even half a Gurley is not all that bad.

Well this year, UGA can stop the run and boy do I love that.

With Kentucky & App St on the schedule, that ranking should improve. I think the pass defense’s numbers will really improve, but Auburn & Tech should give the run defense all they can handle.

If the secondary could get it’s shit together, Georgia’s defense could be fierce. The run defense has been good to smothering since North Texas.

I think the Secondary is going to be good the next few years though. Shaq could be special.

This, though, is no surprise: “They’re dead last in the SEC in scoring defense (31.6 ppg), however, in part because of frequent special-teams meltdowns and offensive mistakes deep in Georgia territory.”

I can’t believe all the bitching that went on after beating Florida three years in a row. There were more disgruntled Dawg fans here on their periods, post game, than a house full of sorority sisters.

The defense at this point is exactly where I expected it to be in the preseason at this time of year. Just the road getting to this point was bumpier than I would have liked.

Do we have a scoring offense in the second half of games? Apparently not against to SEC teams defense. Makes you wonder what will happen in the next 2 SEC games. Even with no points against UF I feel validated about what an O line should do. MAKE THEIR ASSES QUIT IN THE 4TH QUARTER.

The 12 men on the field call after the TO was plain bad coaching. I just finished a little league (7 an 8 yo) football tournament before the Cocktail party. Even we tell the kids to get on the incompleted pass on a swing pass or otherwise. I can’t believe Lynch the Sr., pulled that one. Hats off to Theus for getting after Orr and paying attention.
I am glad Georgia won and have won 3 in a row against the gators. The Gators offense is horrible. I really don’t think the defense is getting better, they seem to play better against bad offenses.
Glad to see them blitz Moore. Hell, if he is going to stand around and look at passes being caught. He might as well blitz.

A shout of “thanks” to the GSP for turning the O line bus around before it left Duval County at end of third quarter. Bobo came back in a separate car.
2Xs this season the O line took charge against 2 respectable defenses in the 4th and kept the ball and the clock. O-line, MAKE THEIR ASSES QUIT IN THE 4TH QUARTER.

Agree Will. It was nice to grind out that victory in the 4th quarter. And they dominated in the first quarter.

Missouri held Tennessee to 3 points. Why the hell can’t we do that?

Will there be staff changes at UT and UF. Good chance at UT after that game against Mizzou. UT’s O line play was like Dawgs at Vandy in 2nd half and 3rd qtr at UF. Coaches at UT should chew some butt this week after the play / execution of that team at MIzzou. Pitiful and very poor.

Playing UF’s offense is the cure for all of your defensive ailments.

It will be OK Timmy. Since college football was only invented 3 years ago, it will take you guys some time to learn the game.

It’s nice to see stats that are indicative of a D turnaround, especially in the run game. I thought they played their best game of this season and hopefully it will continue. There continues to be a wait and see attitude by many of us.
While highlighting D failures/CTG’s excuses for over about two years, at no time has there been a call from these qtrs for firing – that’s the job of the AD who assumed responsibility for him in the second year when CTG was given a raise while Richt and Bobo were slighted (much to the satisfaction of many on here at that time). My biggest gripe was and is centered around making the O responsible in any manner while reasoning so defies the logic of how the game is played. It’s a red herring that causes some to miss the scrutiny that D deserves. When there no longer is any reason to view the D through the skewed perception of a fine O it continues to be tolerated by the fuzzy thinking of some fans .
I sincerely hope that the coaching staff deserves to be together for another year and most certainly to finish this year. Will Trane puts it well when he advocates watching closely for continued improvement in the Aub and GT games, but nothing can take away from the good effort the D gave in stop after stop while defeating our most hated rival plus allowing Dawg fans to stand tall for yet another year.

Okay, don’t beat me up…but…IMHO, CTG has to go…he can stay one more year, but we need a younger healthier D Coordinator. Just saying, I do not see a big future for him anywhere.

Part of the reason for the bad numbers on D for the first half of the season was that Georgia played some of the best teams in the nation during that stretch. According to what I have read, UGA has the 2nd most difficult schedule in the nation this year and most of the really hard games were in the first half. Add the unexpectedly good Missouri team and you can see why the Dawgs D looked worse than maybe it really was. Now that the D is getting better and also the schedule is normalizing a bit expect the D numbers to improve.

CTG could probably become a top 10 DC if he could focus on fundamentals and simplify the playbook. He can certainly recruit. He needs to mature as a coach, much the same as CMB has.

I found the stuff Richt said about telling Grantham to go for it at the end interesting…indicates a good bit more involvement in defense by Richt than most of us thought, I would suspect.

Being 7th in the SEC on defense is not certainly something to brag about, is this the best we can do for $800,000 per year? I hope not?
