    Tied for 9th. I still thought Appy State was better fundamentally than our D.

      Really? You must have missed all the Georgia receivers running through the Mountaineer secondary who weren’t being covered.

        They were at an athletic disadvantage but better coached. I think a lot of Georgia fans saw the same thing.

        Sure, but they were fundamentally in the right coverage. It’s not as if they looked completely fooled. They just don’t have the sprinter speed like we do to keep up. They tackled pretty well too, got some pressure on AM, picked a couple interceptions, and for the most part held Gurley in check. Appy held their own for a half – about as long as can be expected for a program at that level, and then their lack of depth and athletic ability wore them down.

          Yeah, that Michael Bennett sprinter speed kills.

          I don’t know if it was apparent on the broadcast, but their secondary left receivers uncovered regularly. Murray checked off too quickly to take advantage of the two most noticeable ones I saw – Wooten running freely down the seam and Bennett on a post pattern. Both would have been easy scores.

          They blitzed a lot and it worked for them – sort of, as ASU didn’t record a sack – in the first half. The Murray pick was a good play, as he never saw the MLB drop into coverage on the tight end. But the Mason INT was pure Coxian (“I kind of saw Norwood and was like, hmmm, but I decided to throw it anyway…”) throwing at its finest.

            Glad to hear the reason Aaron has been guilty on several occasions of ignoring wide open receivers in favor of trying to throw it into double or triple coverage. I just thought he never looked to his left.

    3.2 points away from the bottom; 18.2 points away from the top. This is a wretched defense. And, while it’s been a team effort aided , primarily, by special teams gaffes, ASU’s ability to convert on 3rd down the first half looked pretty much like every other team’s ability to do so all season long. Grantham is a joke.

      We had 3 true freshman playing in the secondary. Freshman don’t become shutdown DBs during their first year, usually.

      We also jumped up to 5th in total D and 34th nationally.

    Bama…CJ Mosley maybe the best player in the conference on both sides of the ball. Bama…well coached and very experienced.
    Look at the Dawgs and Tigers D stats at home, on the road, and against ranked teams. Dawgs get to see Ellis Johnson and their old recruiting coach and D line coach.

    Vandy and UF’s D…well it took a whipping. But UF has a solid D, but no help from a scoring O. Past 20 games Vandy is 14-6. Who would have thought that. Now hwere did their recruiting classes rank?

    Will a Smart, focused, mentally tough team on execution and assignments show up on the plains. Also can Bobo and Friend get this O firing on all cyclinders on the plains. Can the D play the inside zone read or will the M&M guys light up the yards and score board. Now we and just maybe Jones at UT will see what his D coaches are.

        Now that’s probably the quick, snarky answer but on reflection it is very possible…you really can never know what a team with Georgia’s potential can, all of a sudden, do. Let’s hope the Dawgs we dream of show up. Go Dawgs, GATA!!

    The key to stopping the Auburn running game is our OLB’s. Jenkins and Floyd MUST set the edge and contain the QB on the read-option. They must also set the edge and be ready for the reverse and jet sweep. I believe Smith, Mayes, Thornton, etc., along with Herrera and Wilson in the middle should at least slow that stuff down. Hopefully Drew and Bailey can get a good push and disrupt some plays before they develop. The key will be containment and forcing those outside plays back inside. UGA must also be ready for many screens and short crossing routes, especially on third down. Since we have been pretty stout against the run all year, I expect Malzahn to dial up some easy, short, quick throws early to get our D on its heels. If he is successful, we will be in for a long day. I believe our O will score some points; but will it be enough?
