Boom goes the dynamite.
“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
Holy shit! Muschamp’s gone after this one. Once upon a time not long ago, I’d salivated over the prospect of getting rid of Grantham and getting Boom back in Athens. While I still want to see Grantham’s ass unceremoniously canned, I’m not sure I still want Boom as his replacement.
LikeLike
No Boom please. He followed Gene Chizik at both Auburn and Texas, and the defenses declined at both schools after he took over. He got torched quite a bit at Texas. He’s better than Grantham, but we can do better. And he is not even the DC at Florida so I am not giving him credit for that.
Speaking of Chizik, Auburn led the nation in scoring defense when Chizik was DC. At Texas, he was the DC on the team that won the BCS title. I am not saying we should hire him either, but he has had more success as a DC than Boom.

Oh Senator, I know. I was just having a little fun, because of the salty flavor that this rivalry has taken. AU-UGA crossover coaches have a long and storied tradition. I’m an old dude, know all about it, and I love it. I’m just glad this is a competition again. It was losing its luster because of the UGA domination since the 2005 game. I’m glad y’all “tipped” us a bone!

I kinda hoped we would have one more year of Muschamp. Oh well.
Hitting rock bottom like this is sometimes the best thing. Their program obviously needs a reboot, and now they will get it.
Can’t say the same for other programs that are plateued and going nowhere. Just good enough to keep everyone’s job.

Why not? Because in your world everyone has to take the exact same stance on things? They have to have the exact same opinion or belief or else they are a diametrically opposed enemy?
It is my opinion that the coaching staff we have is completely plateued. They don’t promote a culture of accountability. Coaches that aren’t good enough for the job and salary they have are kept on indefinitely. We hire a S&C coordinator from the video department. Its a joke.
Disagree with me, whatever. But think about it for 2 seconds. If you honestly believed what I believe in the above paragraph, would you be happy with the fact that we never make the big moves to be a big time program?
Maybe you’re fine with 8-10 win seasons and occasionally getting media attention for how we ALMOST DID SOMETHING GREAT.
I’d rather have a program that ACTUALLY does great things – like win national and SEC titles.

You can wander all around and say we almost did, coulda, woulda, shoulda, but then again, we always end up with something like the Auburn ending or some deal like Alabama game in 08. Here’s the problem for FU re: HC of the football team. Look at the 2014 schedule. There is a stretch in the early to mid part where the Gators play several really tough games in a row (Bama, LSU, Georgia to name 3) and likely will lose all of them. They could have 5 or 6 losses before the end of October. A new HC would not want to face that right out of the box. I think they keep Boom around, let him take the heat for those losses, then fire him before season’s end to give themselves a head start over the other teams looking for a new HC. Muschamp never makes it out of the ’14 season. Still, that’s good for us–bad for them. We’ll probably win our 4th in a row at the WLOCP either way.

Muschamp might be done no matter what Foley said last week. Losing to FCS teams can’t be explained totally on injuries. GSU averaged nearly eight yards per rush. Erk would be proud of his team. Put me down as a “no” vote for hiring Muschamp as DC. Pissed me off with his comments about UGA when FU hired him.

I’m with you on not wanting Muschamp as DC in Athens. He hasn’t proven he can keep a team from giving up when it meets adversity.

Which I think is in large part because he can’t keep his cool under adversity. Or ever, really.

I was pissed at many of his comments as well. I guess that I have let some of that go at this point. “What was he supposed to say?” is kind of my feeling about what he said when he got the job. Perhaps though, in what I hope is our version of the Tee Martin season, I want to have someone that knows how to coach the 3-4 so that we don’t have to completely retool the personnel. Certainly Texas had serviceable defenses and Florida’s issues in the past 3 seasons can’t be hung on the defensive side of the ball. I don’t think that the Dawgs need a Top 10 D…top thirty or forty should be adequate. In what is likely Gurley and Malcolm Mitchell’s last season, I just want to have a shot. Admittedly, my hope that WM might be our DC next season is short sighted, but for crying out loud I’m ready for something big in Athens in 2014.

The last time before this in which something close to that happened was in 1979 when FU lost to Georgia and was tied by Tech. But Scorp’s right–it was commonplace. FU has lost to both Georgia and Tech in the same season the following years: 1951, 1950, 1948, 1942, 1939, 1936, 1935, 1933, 1932 and 1931. FU also lost to both Georgia and Mercer in 1926 but did not get the trifecta because they did not play Tech that season.

It was reported that when the absence of a flag for targeting Murray on the last play of the Georgia-Auburn game was pointed out to Penn Wagers, he replied the Murray wasn’t a “defenseless player.” That POS doesn’t even know who is supposed to be covered by the rule–if you believe that BS. A QB throwing a pass is the definition of a “defenseless player.” That asshole has been flagging hits like that on QBs all season. That comment proves Wagers needs to be fired.
