The challengers

Weird year in the SEC East, peeps.  Florida and Tennessee are essentially toast (okay, with two conference losses after six games, the Gators still cling to life support before the Cocktail Party).

Meanwhile, meet the contendahs still with dreams, Kentucky and South Carolina.  So you’re saying there’s a chance!

It shouldn’t be weird when things are ad they should be.

We don’t see things as they are, we see things as we are.

Man you must have some good stuff to get that heavy so early in the morning. I think Kentucky’s light might get dimmer this weekend in StarkVegas, and I think Florida’s light goes out next week.

I hope this is a permanent realignment in the SEC East. UGA at the top and UT/FU near the bottom.

In reality, though, we need them to be competitive to boost our own credibility (and performance, really). The other schools are pretty much never going to be taken seriously on the national scene.

Kentucky isn’t a great team by any stretch, but I also haven’t been all that impressed with Mississippi State. I think UK can beat Tennessee, but I think the dream really dies against Ole Miss. The Rebels can still out-athlete Kentucky with what’s left over from the cheatin’.

That said, there’s still a chance here in Week 8 that the Georgia-Kentucky game could be the SEC East Championship Game and if that doesn’t count as one of the signs of the apocalypse, I don’t know what does.

Kentucky plays Miss St this weekend on the road. Faux dogs are 10 point favorites. Let the cowbells ring loudly.

More and more it’s South Carolina I’m wary of in these last 5 games … If we beat UF as expected we (fans) will easily overlook these guys with the game between the hedges. Kentucky on the other hand doesn’t scare me at all … Like Miss State, that team has traditionally never traveled well (except the recent games in Columbia SC).
Auburn is a toss up. We’re good enough to win there and the bounces have been going our way against the War Eagle Tigers. Would be nice if the drums of “fire Gus” continue to get louder as we approach that one.

South Carolina is garbage. They might be 5-3 but they could easily have Florida’s record. They didn’t win at Tennessee by virtue of anything they did right. Their offense is anemic, their defense is just ok, they’re nothing to be afraid of.

Kentucky is a better team than South Carolina. Hands down.

      • Bill C’s got South Carolina at 63 and Kentucky at 77 in S&P+. The gap between the two really isn’t that big on overall performance quality. They’re two pretty mediocre teams.

Regarding your comment below, South Carolina has won in Athens more recently than Kentucky (2011 vs 2009). Georgia should beat both of these teams by 20 points or so with the “any given Saturday” caveat obviously applying.

That’s all well and good where Bill C has them, but without Deebo Samuel they are not the team that beat NC State. USCe has always been a one-horse show offensively. Without their one big play maker they are painfully mediocre.

Interestingly enough, their overall percentile performance has been better against every team they’ve played SINCE Deebo went down with injury than it was against NC State, with the Texas A&M game being the one exception. It is fair to say their offense hasn’t been that great since he went down based on percentile performance, but I think that’s a lack of explosive plays. I don’t believe they were very efficient even when he was in the lineup.

Either way – the original point is that they are both very average to mediocre teams that should be 20 point underdogs in Athens based on how the teams have performed thusfar.

By the way, Kentucky beat us in Athens only a few years ago.

The fact that Kentucky and Sackerlina are sandwiched between “big” games for us is all they have going for them. Kentucky will probably score on us, but they can’t stop us. Sackerlina may slow us down for a bit, but there’s no way they will score enough to beat us.

We won our “let down” game by 25 points.

You are right, neither of those teams will beat us, we will have to lose it via turnovers, or a total don’t give a shit performance. I ISU always subscribe to a “any given Saturday” because 20 year old males are capable of a D performance against an inspired team hitting on all cylinders (Clemson/Cuse, OU/Iowa State, etc.). I don’t see the senior leadership let that happen, and both are at home.

Florida’s path is just as clear as SC. Beat UGA, win out, and hope UGA drops another game. There are only 3 conference games left for SC and FL; they play each other, UGa, and a supposed pushover (Vandy/Mizzou).

Kentucky has only played 3 conference games. They are definitely going to lose one more and probably drop 2.

Damn, you went and did it. I know you qualified it, but if we lose to Florida, it’s gonna be your fault. 😉

Tony Barnhart tells me that next week starts the real test of the season. 5 games that will tell us who UGA really is.

I’d normally say something like ‘we should ease their suffering as they proceed into the great beyond’. But I imagine the combination of Chubb & Co and Roquan & Co is going to make their final journey a bit more traumatic and painful.
