Sagarin is not impressed.

It’s not like it’s the end of the world or anything, but I’m a little surprised at where Georgia’s come out in Sagarin’s preseason rankings.

The Dawgs are eleventh, which is third-best in the conference.  What really stands out, though, is the gap in the raw numbers for the three teams:

  • Alabama — 100.28
  • Auburn — 91.28
  • Georgia — 86.14

Put it this way:  Georgia’s metric is closer to Georgia Tech than Alabama.  Weird, hunh.

If you’re looking for happier rankings, Massey-Peabody is here to help.

If last season there were no truly great teams, this season could see 5 really great teams.

I’m thinking Georgia is as good as anyone on offense and the OL can even play with bama’s or clemson’s DL. My concern is the interior DL/ILB, specifically how Tucker was able to free up Roquan to make plays.

Yeah I saw this yesterday. I have written a python program to pull sagarin ranks off his site, and I couldn’t believe it when I saw we were behind FSU, Michigan St, etc.. I thought he had made a mistake and used the 2017 starting numbers.

Perhaps strength of schedule influences whatever statistical algos he is using to come up with rankings??

I’m not sure how Sagarin arrives at his preseason rankings, but last year, Georgia was 18th.

Nice. I have no idea how these Metrics are broken down but since I am much happier with Massey Peabody cause they rank us higher. It’s a game week and I am all about the positive.

Bluto – what about the Jon Fabris pool? Now shows as teams not selected. Good time for a reminder for everyone as well. The ads really screw with navigation plus what is this $10 to get rid of them?

Changed to WSLS? And I had made my picks there, but when I went to Join a Pool, it automatically inserted “Jon Fabris” and “Cojones” and after hitting “join”, it said the pool didn’t exist. Old shit in the system?

UGA doesn’t appear until the 3rd week? And you can see the entire year’s lineup by progressing forward. That’s the one?

          • It sounds like you’re in some alternative reality. No idea how you got there.

149 people have already made their picks for this week, so this looks like it’s you, not the site. Not really sure what else I can tell you.

Finally found the way to it by asking for another pool. WSLS had been changed into the place just below 2017 Jon Fabris Invitational. Still don’t know why after having automatically entered into Jon Fabris (only words automatically placed) with my name automatically selected and pressing “join” gave me a message that the teams had not been selected yet.

Now there are 150 of us.

At one time Sagarin was important because iirc he was a part of the selection process for the mythical CG. Now? Barely a reason to notice. People I know who gamble never look at him.

  8. I’ll admit the preseason computer rankings mean less to me than the preseason human polls. How in the world can a computer algorithm evaluate the current year teams when there is no actual game data as input? It seems whatever bias is in the model is even more pronounced in a preseason ranking. I’m saying it cuts both ways as a positive or negative indicator.

We’ve had several here at GTP pine for the days of computer rankings to select the CFP teams and Saragin is the sole piece of evidence of why this is a horrible idea, especially for UGA. Even if the formula’s are transparent (and IIRC, they are not) it has as much baked in bias as any human committee member.

      • I’ll admit I’m one of those who believe a more objective measure like the BCS rankings would be better than the moving target of the committee. I do believe a mix of the human polls with the computer rankings is a better formula.

But, yes, in the absence of a “champions only” format, any selection method is going to have a subjective element to it.

Exactly, computer rankings have been misunderstood for years, imo. We all assume there is a level of objectivity to protect us from flawed humans and their biases. That may be true once the initial inputs are provided, but it is a human that does that. If they all started with a level field, over the course of a season with the interactions that occur, you would end up with an objective ranking.

Sagarin, as we can see, starts with certain power rankings provided, it gets better as the season plays out but all the horses in the race don’t start out from the start place. I only look at Sagarin later in the season, and then only to see the ones that vary significantly with my own opinions from following the season, or the actual betting line. In other words when something has a major variance with general consensus thinking it deserves to be looked at closer. But using it as a predictor is not a good idea. Phil Steele has his own paid predictive power poll, I subscribed to it for one season and dropped it as unreliable. Another way of saying, you can study all you want, and try any system out there, hitting 60-65% over a season is damned good. You won’t ever make a lot of money doing it, but it sure makes Saturday’s more exciting, and you learn a lot about lesser known teams/players. Shame it doesn’t last longer like NHL and NBA.

No reason to get worked up about the preseason polls from anyone any longer. The old AP and Coaches polls set up a lot of barriers if you started too far back but the Committee starting in October washes most of that out. Always a team that comes from the mid-teens to make the playoff, just like UGA did last year. Think there was only one year where the front runners stayed in place all the way with minor movement.

My question has always been this….Sagarin at least used to claim that his poll was based solely on results….how do you even have a preseason poll with no results to enter?

The only big red tractor at the time. I’ve always been pissed that the good reliable budget equip is that damn orange color, so I’ve gotten green equip for years. Only red stuff is snapper and the jap knock off cant remember the names. I will not buy a kubota for obv reasons.
