A quick statistical snapshot

Per cfbstats.com:

The Dawgs are better than Alabama in every one of those statistical categories, if you’re looking for a benchmark.

They’ve been no slouch offensively, either.  Even though LSU’s offense has been the talk of the conference so far — deservedly — Georgia sports a higher yards per play number than does LSU.

Georgia also leads the SEC in offensive plays of 10+ yards and is second in defensive plays of 10+ yards.

All in all, that’s a picture of a pretty good team.

Spare me the stats, nerd. They weren’t man enough to go for it on fourth down, and that cost them…a cover.

I also like we’ve given up only one Sack all season and are second in the league in sacks… weird that Bama is 3 sacks behind us.

I really like where this team is at defensively. Even without our best corners we were incredible against the best opposing passing attack we will likely see until December. And even when we gifted them a 4 yard field on the muffed punt, they needed 5-6 downs to get 6.

  5. Is Kirby Smart developing into the next Les Miles? Great defensive numbers and all the talent in the world on offense but finding ways to underwhelm on offense? I’d like to think not, but it has an eerily familiar feel.

Sure, if you ignore the fact that Georgia has ranked higher in offense than defense the last two years, and is still ranked higher in SP+ after Saturday (9th vs. 10th).

      • Do you think this team should have been held to 23 points on Saturday night? If they were, what held them back? See the post below about tempo and game management in the 4th quarter.

What held Clemson at home to 24 against A&M, and why isn’t that getting similar scrutiny?

Crazy idea: maybe other top 10 teams practice too.

          • No kidding. Not looking for the snark, but we’ve seen where the philosophy breaks down and bites us in the butt. Not sure why we cant get the offensive numbers and the points instead of just juicy stats.

And you think Clemson and Lawrence arent being scrutinized right now? Folks were panicking because of his turnover issues and low productivity, last I saw.

I thought the game plan early was a little screwy, and I think they ran too many end-arounds given what Notre Dame was doing defensively. However, there is another team involved, and that team is good. They tackled well. They weren’t blown off the ball, and they covered well for the most part, when they weren’t interfering. I just think you’re overreacting to one game…that Georgia won.

The “scoring defense” stat is quite flawed, IMO, in they’re counting special teams and turnover TDs as “scoring defense” TDs– we’ve only got three TDs against the defense, not four. The points against average versus the actual defense is 8.25.

Two areas I’d like to clean up:

In game decisions like not going for a foot up 10 with 7 to play at their 25 and the fake kick fiascos.

Let’s go faster. We’re not fully using our defensive depth advantage and our OL size advantage if we’re only getting 58 offensive plays.

Get that play count over 80 and this thing can be a monster. I don’t think we can expect to be playing “small ball” vs. the big boys at the end of the season. We’re going to need to score and then salt the game away with that OL and backs vs. a defense that is worn out. Then we get the trophy and have a parade.

The Defense was gassed at the end of the game. The team shouldn’t have gone faster.

Perhaps you don’t rate the “flops” by ND to slow things down as being effective. That’s what happened to our fast tempo that they cheated and broke up twice. It was one of the reasons ND wasn’t run out of the stadium. It was working.
