Jimmy Carter, like Donald Trump, was President of the United States. He had ties to all of the schools.

Pre-9/11 by like 20 years. Security is a much different animal right now, and the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans is not Bryant Denny Stadium in a tiny ass little town that already breaks on big game days.

My understanding (from a Red Elephant guy) is that there is no place for Air Force One to land, so the problem that presents is that AF1 will have to land in Birmingham, forcing either a Marine One landing or a motorcade between the Ham and Tuscaloosa, which is going to cause all kinds of problems.
And I think we can be bi-partisan in saying that this would be a tremendous pain in the ass to deal with no matter who the President was. It just seems especially needy after his last few forays into public sporting events.

The school may fund it, Senator, but that doesn’t make it an arm of the state. Many student newspapers at public schools are at least partially funded by student fees and other state funds, but that doesn’t mean the school can dictate content. In fact, there’s a huge stack of decisions outlining all the ways the state cannot interfere with such content — including yanking funding for content administrators find objectionable. I know you’re a lawyer, but trust me on this one.

As someone who works at a large public school in a position that often puts me in contact with SGA kids, my strong suspicion is that the Student Body President was talking right straight out of his ass and can’t deny anybody shit. The university’s general counsel probably got to him between the original message and the walkback.

That sounds pretty arm-ish to me.

I guess I’d have to research Alabama’s setup specifically, and I’m not ready to invest that much into it. I’d suspect that while the SGA does decide on respective groups’ funding there, administrators almost certainly have some signoff/veto power if those students’ decisions run afoul of the law. I’ve worked at another school (Clemson, actually) where it worked exactly that way. So in that way the SGA may be an arm of the state in the way that student media groups expressly are not. I doubt they’d be considered an arm of the state in any action where no funding was attached — if the SGA passed a resolution in support of “women’s reproductive rights,” for instance, it would be in direct contradiction to “the state” broadly, but I don’t think the university could make them “take it back” — but in this case, you’re probably right, now that I think about it.
As to the matter at hand, I still stick by my Student-Body-President-talking-out-his-ass theory. And I’m pretty sure somebody got to him after that post and told him something that prompted the walkback. Let the SGA deny funding (or block seating, or anything) to a group based on legitimate exercise of First Amendment rights and see what happens.

It was a real pain in the ass when he visited for National Champ game- standing out in the rain behind the concrete barrier trying to get in.
Let’s hope it’s at least as equally a pain in the ass Saturday for the fans and if Bama loses compounds their miserable day.
