                  From Urban Dictionary: When a baby boomer says some dumb shit and you can’t even begin to explain why he’s wrong because that would be deconstructing decades of misinformation and ignorance so you just brush it off and say okay.

                  That’s a bit more harsh than I would’ve worded it, but you get the gist. To put it in more relatable terms, I think of some of the conversations I’ve heard about raising the minimum wage. Older people often come in with statements like “when I was that age, I made 50 cents an hour!” or something like that. Now I’m not arguing that minimum wage should be $20/hr, but I bet it would only take about 5 to 10 minutes of research to demonstrate that minimum wage in a lot of places hasn’t kept up with inflation. But a lot of people don’t want to hear that. They’d rather chalk it up to young people today being overly entitled and wanting a free ride and so on. So when boomers and millennials clash, rather than spout off facts which are likely to fall on deaf ears, a millennial might instead just say “ok, boomer”.

                  And FYI, I’m not a millennial. I was born in ’81, and by most definitions I believe the cutoff is ’83 or ’85 for millennials.

      Bold move to go from The Road to Blood Meridian. I think the pacing is much better in the final tenth of the book.

      As I said last week, I found it tuff to complete the first time due to the horrific nature of the story. On subsequent readings, one of my favorite books. Once I knew the plot, I could focus on the theme and the countless details that examine it.

      Also, because of CM’s idiosyncratic rules of punctuation, the audiobook makes it easier to follow.

      Depends on how far you gotten. It gets more narrative after everyone is introduced, but it is not an easy read. The angle that got me into it is this: The Judge is bored. Almost everything he does is for personal entertainment.

    Weird question for a football blog but since it’s the playpen…..

    I know we have some Eggheads here (aka big green egg owners). If we’re doing the Thanksgiving turkey on my in laws large (not XL or 2xl) big green egg, do I have enough room to spatchcock the turkey (believe grid is 18 inch diameter)? If yes, what’s worked well for collecting drippings for gravy?

      I use a cajun cooker/water smoker and I don’t like smoked drippings for gravy so I’ll buy some fresh thighs or backs and roast them for drippings.

      Long time egger and big spatchcock fan, however I stopped doing turkeys this way quite a few years ago. First, you are limited in size – roughly 14 lb or so compared to around 16-18 lb upright in a L BGE. Second, and more importantly, the presentation (if that’s at all important to you) isn’t anywhere near is good when the turkey is lying completely flat as opposed to standing up.

      My two biggest tips for doing turkey are:

      Brine the turkey for 24 hours beforehand, then rinse/rest for 8-12 hours. I personally do a buttermilk brine recipe myself that always has yielded good results.
      With turkey sitting at room temp, place a large, gallon ziplock bag of ice on top of the beast for approx. 20-30 minutes before cooking. Breast meat cooks faster than the rest of the bird, which typically results in dried out white meat. However, icing the breasts while sitting at room temp will enable the entire turkey to finish at the same time, and the breast will be very juicy. Regardless of how you cook your turkey, if nothing else, definitely ice down the breast portion

      I also go light on the wood and typically use a milder one, like pecan, cherry, apple, etc. When in doubt, use less wood.

        Absolutely on the ice. I also inject some melted butter into the breast. Agree on the light smoke in fact I have had the best results just using lump and no addition wood chunks / chips.

          Totally agree. You get good smoke from lump alone, and too many people cook their turkey in a smoker or outdoor oven/BGE using way too much wood, resulting in a rather nasty, chemically tasting bird.

          Thanks, this is money. In regards to spatchcocking I just like how a flattened bird cooks and it makes carving a breeze but we’ve done turkeys un-spatchcocked before so not a problem.

          Definitely agree on the brine, makes a huge difference.

          Ditto. Alton’s technique combined with a good brine and rub is the way to go. I’m running one through the Traeger this year, one in the oven a la AB, and a couple in the deep fryer.
          This is truly my favorite time of year. Lots of friends and family get togethers, chilly weather, hunting season is on, good football on Saturdays.

          Ditto, that’s worked well for me too. Also helps to “mold” the foil triangle to the shape of the breast before cooking if one plans on adding the foil mid cook.

      I have stopped doing a whole turkey and instead do three sets of Breasts on my large egg using indirect heat at 275. Add two small chunks of pecan, apple, or cherry for some smoke. It typically takes about 2-3 hours and the results are terrific. I can stick an aluminum tray on the plate setter to catch any drippings. Brining is optional. (I don’t brine.) Make sure you lather that bird up with some good butter on the outside and inside the skin. My go to seasoning for turkey, is Honey Hog BBQ rub. http://www.meatchurch.com Spread generously over and inside the bird. Let it rest about 30 minutes before slicing.

    I’m absolutely not ready for winter yet (it was 22 this morning at my house. Depressing)
    New cars have gotten ridiculously more expensive. 60K+ for a new SUV? Heck, though I can afford it, I don’t think I’ll ever buy new again, even though I typically keep cars 10 years and put over 200K on them. FWIW the new Lincoln Aviator is a beauty.
    I drink less these days than I ever have before (7-8 drinks a week or so total), but now I have a new vice: cigars. Mind you, I’ve only been averaging 1-2 a month, but man I totally get why so many enjoy a good cigar on occasion
    The louder the tv commercial, the dumber the audience they are catering to
    A rocky economy is just ahead. Buckle up

      I have a bird dog ready to start, this weekend it will finally be cool enough to work her without killing her.
      The leaves look fabulous on the north end of Lake Lanier from the water.
      My wife and I made some major financial milestones this year, There is a very bright light at the end of our tunnel. To celebrate, I bought my Father in Law’s 2003 Dodge 1500 for 5k. Candy Apple red, 5 speed, 4×4 regular cab with the little V-8. Get this: 38k original miles and not a scratch. I swear I feel like a teenager banging around town in it.
      I’m a malty beer guy, but have been enjoying some of the local hard ciders lately.
      Love cigars, but taste them for 3 days after. No bueno.
      Frank Thomas’ testosterone booster commercials are getting old.
      Let’s hope it’s not as rocky as 2006 ……

    Signed up for Disney+ (got young daughters, kind of a no brainer). Watched the first episode of The Mandalorian today, it’s a Star Wars spin-off that takes place not long after Return of the Jedi. If you’re even a casual Star Wars fan, looks like it’s gonna he really good. The twist at the end of episode 1 is REALLY good. They’re not releasing all the episodes at once like Netflix does with its original programming, they’re staggering the releases, so only Episode 1 is available. Looking forward to the rest of the series.

    Disney+ is $6.99/mo. They also have a bundle that may interest some of us — $12.99/mo gets you Disney+, Hulu+, and ESPN+. ESPN+ is still kinda bare but I think ESPN is going to start putting more and more things behind that paywall.

      I had ESPN+ prior to the bundling with Disney (I did go ahead and upgrade to that yesterday) and it’s pretty great. From a CFB perspective, it only currently live broadcasts the lower tier Big 12 games and P5 games. However – you get access to the full 30 for 30 library, replays of CFB games, many UFC events are broadcast live on ESPN+, and the soccer / tennis coverage is great. I’ve definitely enjoyed having it around. I suspect it’s all part of a greater plan with Disney to take the next round of CFB rights behind the paywall, but who knows.

      I also signed up for a trial, but may cancel it before getting charged. Unless you have young kids it is pretty bare bones right now. I will probably sign up again for it once the Mandalorian (Only 6 episodes? Weak) has all episodes available, and maybe wait for some of the more anticipated Marvel series to come out in 2021. Once they get more of their adult original content rolling it will probably be worth it. Some cool 80s disney/fox movies I haven’t seen since I was a kid though. Flight of the Navigator what a throwback.

      I couldn’t sign up for the hulu/espn bundle because I’m already paying $10 a month for Hulu/spotify. New user deal only.

    Venison. I have learned how to properly butcher,age,package,prepare and cook venison. Been killing and dressing mammals alone since I was 12. The cooked meat was mostly not as good as I preferred. Now it’s tender and tasty enough that some folks swear it’s not venison. Briefly here’s what I do different:
    Leave the hams intact. Clean and dry all the meat and seal in Ziplock big bags 4XL. Store in a refrigerator at 35-37 degrees. I use a fridge that’s dedicated to aging meat so the temperature is constant 37. Turn the meat at least once a week. I’ve found 24 days is right for tenderizing without browning the meat. Tenderloin and backstrap of even young deer need to set for at least 24 hours in order for rigor to subside.
    Before freezing clean and dry the meat again. Wrap in Clingwrap leaving no airspace. Then wrap and tape in Butcher Paper. Break the hams down into individual cuts. YouTube is your friend. Write the name of the cut and freeze date on each package. Properly packaged meat will remain viable for many years.
    Before cooking the meat,whether you age it or not, you must remove ALL fat and as much silverskin as possible. This is what causes the meat to taste gamey. Venison is best when cooked rare to medium. My friend from the CDC says venison is safer to eat raw than production farm beef.
    this isn’t controlled rotting. it’s true aging. Time in the fridge reduces the collagen which is what makes meat tough.
    Got to go. I just lung shot a 4 point and my dumb ass will be looking for him in the dark. No joke.

        Neck shot is absolutely the trick Cowdog. Was running iron sights trying to cull a funky 5 point that had been close in. Finally got a profile shot at about 70 yards in the woods and fading light. Aging eyes and not as steady hand so I opted for behind the shoulder. Came back in and finished typing that babble above while I let him bleed out. Good blood trail to where he ran about 50 yards and expired. Different buck. Nice symmetrical 6 point that would’ve made somebody a nice trophy in a couple years.
        Couple of friends helped me drag him and dress him. Fed the yotes. Had a couple beers. Looking forward to fried tenderloin biscuits Saturday morning and grilled medallions for the SEC Championship game.
        I’m not a trophy hunter so I feel bad about whacking a potential wall mount. But I’m seeing plenty of trophy bucks that have reached their potential and aren’t so stupid as to stand still for some “wore out old Ranger”.
        And Cowdog, every time I read your name I miss my heeler. Angie would track a dying deer and grab a mouthful of fur and help in the skinning. A Damn Good Dog.

          “Perle” loves her some gut pile and hates a bath. Actually, Perle lives on the farm with my dad now. We sold our little hobby farm where my kids grew up and the dog had plenty of room to play, moving to the lake a few years ago. Perle made the trip to the lake with us. We had a trip out of town so Perle went to stay with my dad (We have a real farm about 30 minutes west of Athens) for the week. I picked her up after the trip and brought her home, no worries. The poor dog moped around, stood at the door and whined, wouldn’t eat, just acting off. The next weekend rolled around and she rode to the farm with me as usual. When it came time to go home it told her to saddle up, she looked at me, looked at the open truck door, looked at Dad, then went over and sat beside my father in the driveway. “Pop, looks like you got yourself a cowdog” I said. Turns out that had been their plan the whole time. Mom spilled the beans: The week he dogsat, Perle went everywhere he did. To the gym in the mornings, to the local cafe with the boys for lunch (where she got a cheeseburger), to the beer store in the afternoon (where she got a Slim Jim). In the evenings she would ride in the front seat with Dad as they made the daily rounds of the place during the afternoon cocktail tour then slept on a pallet next to his bed. All of these things they did/do every day, so Perle D. Cowdog decided to live with Got Sr. They’re both happy and that makes me happy. So technically I’m “Had Cowdog” but I like the handle so I’m keeping it.

          I love my Iron sighted rifles but don’t hunt with them. I do my own processing as well, and that neck shot saves a bunch of shoulder. Try corning some of your shoulder roast, then smoke some for pastrami. I also started canning a lot of what I normally would have ground. We ate with a co-workers family in Germany, the Oma made goulash with canned venison and I was knocked out by it, so I had to learn to do it as well. I also did a salt cured venison ham Prosciutto style that turned out really well.
          I don’t trophy hunt either. We kill two or three a year to process and eat and we have a couple really nice bucks around. One I’ve been watching for 5 years or so was killed by our 15 year old neighbor during bow season and scored 160 plus.

          We see the deer and feral hogs on the farm as targets of opportunity (deer only during the appropriate season, obviously) and both tractors have gun racks, just in case. ;

          The proof of Yang’s proposal failing is already in place …if the idea worked in economic reality, why don’t we just increase SS payments today by, I don’t know…$10,000 per month per beneficiary? The old folks will have a ball going on trips, buying vacation homes, spending on their grandkids, etc. Right??? Why not keep going. Identify through the census and tax returns every American family earning less than the poverty limit…say $20,000 per year. Just have the US Treasury send each family a check for $1,000,000. No more poverty! New money flowing through the economy! This has to work!! Better still…no increase in taxes. We’re just printing the money, so no one has to pay!

          Go for it.

          P.S. I wonder how much Yang is invested in cryptocurrency? Convenient if the US Dollar were to plummet in value. Asking for a friend. In Venezuela.

        In a vacuum , I actually hate his idea. But we don’t live in a vacuum. Intentional or not , a permanent consumer class has been established. They’ll never save , they’ll never have anything. Our technology is too good to need them in the work force. They have to be pacified. They have to eat.

        His plan is tax it with a sales tax, so fine. There will be more opportunity for the small hustlers out there to get their piece of it.

        The treasury has printed tons of new money already to bail out the big cats – honestly I don’t know why we haven’t had big inflation already. I guess because most of that money stays parked.

      I had to switch to swimming about a decade ago but what I really miss is hoops at old Stegman!

        Nothing like swimming to keep you fit from head to toe. Low impact. My neighbor across the hollow about a quarter mile has an indoor pool. He’s in great shape at 76 but won’t allow me swimming privileges. Something about bathing every Saturday night whether I need it or not.

          Swimming is low impact on anything not named your shoulders. I was a competitive swimmer through high school. Freestyle and butterfly. About 10 years ago, I had to have both AC joints shaved down, as I had worn the cartilage out of both. I can do 500 yards on a good day, now, before both wings light up like somebody shoved a hot knife into the joint.

            Thatguy,I hate that for you and I stand corrected. Dr Fayette Mcelhannon repaired both my shoulders. Swimming for me is limited to diving with fins and my hands crossed over my stomach.
            Athens Orthopedics did a great job.

              I mean, I still love the water, and still love getting in, but, as far as lifetime exercise, it’s been dead for me for about a decade, unless I want to kickboard for cardio.

              The marvelous Marvin Royster from Peachtree Orthopedics did my surgery, and did a fine job, but, until somebody invents artificial cartilage, me and lap swimming are done.

    Not a fan of Trump or Republicans or many of their plans not a fan of the Democrats, especially the bat shit crazy SJWs. I will just kep voting for Libertarians and take my Ls. I believe a ton of people are libertarians and just don’t know it or are afraid that one of the other parties will get to much power. I have little faith in the left or right to do anything from a common sense perspective. The extremes are driving both parties, Being a classic liberal or a centrist is just so last century.
