Maybe Kirby realizes there’s a pretty good chance of a rematch. Why show them everything. It was pretty clear to me that Georgia could do what they wanted to in that game.

Kirby and Monken went into Anaconda mode in the second half, just squeezing the life out of UT. Sure the rain was probably a factor but, they knew they could chew the clock and limit UT possessions as illustrated by the 8:44 drive in the 3rd. UT’s D didn’t limit us, we limited them.

Been seeing this everywhere. They are taking a moral victory in Georgia not scoring a second half touchdown. They are saying “ we shut them down in the second half.” Hokay.

In reading the Vol message boards purely out of hate, there was a helluva lot of that sentiment that UT’s defense crushed the Georgia offense in the second half. I know that “reasonable” and “Vol fan” don’t belong together, but there were several Vol posters that disagreed and said that Mother Nature was the reason that the game wasn’t worse than it could have been since Georgia only passed the ball 4 times in the second half and just chewed clock. Mostly those posters got yelled down, but there were a few that surmised that if the weather had been the same and Georgia wanted to do it Georgia would have won by 30 to 40.

My favorites on there though were a couple of people blaming the loss on Heupel for taking the FG on 4th down after the opening drive fumble by Georgia. Like they didn’t watch UT’s offense getting humbled by Georgia the entire first half.

This game was like a reversal of the the 2015 Alabama monsoon. High flying darling comes in only for the reigning champ to absolutely crush their hopes and dreams in the first half. Skies open up and the winning team thinks “hey guys we’ve made our point, let’s just shorten this game and get out of here. Hey what’s for dinner?!?” Which bars we hitting tonight?”

I think the only person more disappointed than the fans with the Georgia offense going 3 and out repeatedly was hendon hooker because that meant he had to go back out there to resume his beating.

Yeah, he does some backtracking on subsequent tweets after everyone pointed out how dumb the first tweet was.

    • miltondawg

Backtracking? He said that the tweet was “meant” to show how absolutely dominant Georgia’s defense was. Of course there isn’t anything in that tweet about Georgia’s defense or Tennessee’s offense. It wasn’t backtracking, it was a complete attempt at a Jedi mind-trick.

Yeah typically I don’t like rematch games but in this case we so completely dominated Tennessee that I can’t think of anything they could possibly do to worry me.

I’m with you. Typically hate rematches, but UTjr is a one trick pony. And this team knows how to take that trick from them and shove it right up their orange asses.

SBIVs deep balls and Ringo’s INT were the glaring examples.

No I want a new top 5 team to destroy, Ohio state and / or Michigan would be might tasty. ( yeah I know we beat Michigan last year) Tennessee and Oregon can go to a New Years 6

Like it or not, they’re probably the 2nd best team in the country.
I think they beat Ohio State. I see Tennessee winning out and making the playoff. I’m pulling for TCU to win out. Then we get them in the 1-4 matchup and play the winner of Tennessee/Big Ten Champ in the final.

Like our 1st half passing stats!? Maybe with a touchdown catch on the last drive, the one we couldn’t hold on to?
They sure as hell don’t hold Tn to 6points in a half or quarter for that matter.

I personally think Oregon would beat UT. Oregon has plenty in the tank on offense to keep the ball away and keep up, they have some dudes on defense, and hell of a defensive coach.

Agree wholeheartedly. Oregon would be a 1 loss power 5 12-1 conference champion and Tennessee would be an 11-1 power 5 conference division runner up. The CFB playoff was created because 4 of the power 5 didn’t like the SEC hogging too many BCS slots to the exclusion of the PAC 12, Big Ten, Big 12 and ACC. The committee, which is the tool of the conferences to make sure conferences other than the SEC get to wet their beaks in championship money, would be under pressure to include the first PAC 12 team over a second SEC team.

The 2 seasons in which 2 SEC teams got bids were 2017, due to Bama privilege and 2021 when UGA was so head and shoulders above anyone else and the playoffs would lose credibility if UGA got left out in favor of a 2 loss team.

I don’t want UT to get in the playoffs for numerous reasons. Recruiting is the biggest, but I don’t want to play any team that Georgia beat handily a second time when the stakes are even higher (on a neutral field, to boot). Nevertheless, I see Georgia playing UT again if TCU loses this week to Texas, at Baylor, or in the Big XII championship game. Based on the committee’s reasoning behind TCU being behind Bama last week, I imagine that UT will be #4 and TCU #5 after yet another come from behind TCU win Saturday. If Georgia wins out and wins the SECCG, I think it will be Georgia in the Peach Bowl vs. the 11-1 loser of Ohio State vs. Michigan OR TCU if TCU finishes 13-0 and UT will face the winner of the Ohio State/Michigan game in the Fiesta Bowl. All to see who plays in SoFi in LA January 9th.

I’m confident Georgia would win the rematch but why should Tennessee get a rematch? They had their opportunity on the big stage with all of college football watching and they couldn’t back up all their big talk or justify being hyped to the moon. They don’t deserve a rematch.

JMO, but those back to back fumbles showed just how much the rain was affecting the game…great gameday coaching from Kirby to play it safe on offense and trust his defense the rest of the way.

  12. Georgia had that 3rd quarter drive of 15 plays in 8:44…. Can anyone who is more savvy with digging up stats find where this ranks in terms of longest drive time for the season?

Bud Elliott also pointed out the Georgia was averaging almost 9 YPP building building its 3-score lead, then just 3 after that. I think it’s easy to tell what that says about Tennessee’s D vs Georgia’s O.

Am I the only one who felt like the defense was fine playing bend but don’t break especially in the 4th quarter and making Tennessee effectively run out the clock? Sure seemed that way as we let Tennessee nibble down the field.

    • Until we had that safety blitz. That was so opposite of what we had been doing.

      Like

      • junkyardawg41

True and classic Kirby. At Bama, he wouldn’t start blitzing until the other team crossed into his territory. It is the reverse of UTs spread philosophy. With less field to cover and less potential for explosives, you can gamble more on blitz’s.

        Liked by 4 people

        • What I mean is that we were blitzing LBs and the star successfully. Blitzing a safety is different than anything we had been doing. Hooker threw right where Chris Smith came from.

Sorry brother if you thought I was poking. I was agreeing that we brought different blitzes that confused the Tennessee Offense. I was also pointing out that Kirby has a game plan too that hasn’t changed all that much. Where the blitz’s come from constantly changes — and that’s what makes our D quite good.

The sheer number of UGA fans that were online complaining after the game that Kirby should have kept his foot on the gas in the second half was maddening. We were three TDs ahead and it was coming a monsoon. Did I want a total annihilation of the Vols? Sure, but after trading fumbles, protecting the ball at all costs was what made the most sense. (Plus, I’m of the opinion that Kirby’s days of not keeping his boot on an opponent’s throat are pretty much over, at least under normal circumstances.)

My favorite part of UT “keeping it close” was our sideline celebrating a TD before the ball was even thrown.

The UT fans are even crazier than Bama fans. Kirby is first, last. and always going to be a defensive coach. When we got the 3 TD lead and it started to really rain, it was old school rockem sockem football. When your defense is killing the other team and you don’t want any more rain turnovers you just revert to 1960’s football. Had it been close he would have kept his foot on the gas but it wasn’t so he let the elite defense eat. UT fans can paint this pig any color they want but the UT players know they got a good butt whipping.

If I learned anything this past week it’s how few folks out there really know what they’re talking about regarding sports, and more specifically CFB. The so-called knowledge of us fans and talking heads out there is a mile wide and MAYBE an inch deep. And you don’t have to look far to read, hear, and/or see it, and you actually can’t get away from it. One shallow overstated and opinion feeds upon another.

Meanwhile, there are actually a few folks who take a deep dive into game film and draw conclusions as objectively as possible, and then make reasonable and measured projections of “if this, then that should happen”. Each of those that I have come to respect in that context basically predicted what happened on Saturday in Athens. They could see the national UT narrative was quintessentially way over its skis, including the one about UGA. And I’m convinced they will say the same thing post-game as the point you’re making here. It coulda shoulda been much worse. The score was MUCH closer than the actual game itself. Any other take away is just ignorant.

PM me if you really wanna know how I feel about it.

This a hundred times. I was laughing at all the hand wringing going into the game. Part of the reason why is because I watch the games and knew Georgia was more than capable of beating Tennessee knew Tennessee was being way overhyped based on beating Alabaman at home. But also because I watch Film Don’t Lie and it should be required viewing. We would t have near as many hot takes and stupid narratives if it was. They looked at why Tennessee had so much trouble with Pitt who is not even good and saw that it was because Pitt went after Hooker relentlessly. I knew that if they knew that then Kirby knew that and knew Georgia’s defense was much, much better than Pitt’s and had no doubt Georgia was going to win.

Obviously a minute detail in complete domination but the end of half time management bothered me. It left us kicking a field goal on 3rd instead of another attempt at a TD with 2 TOs in our pocket. Didn’t matter here but may at some point.

    • It agree it was so frustrating at the time, but it does seems like a smart decision just to take 3 points and kill the clock completely, than to score 7 with any time left for Tenn to score before halftime AND get the ball to start the 2nd half. Not letting Tenn get 2 possessions in a row was way bigger than it seemed at the time.

This game was like Bama vs Colt McCoy’s Texas team except the starting QB didn’t have to go out. The head coach knew the D would shut down the other team enough to win. I don’t agree with how conservative it went but, that was the strategy.
