Something to tide you over until the Ray Drew announcement –
- Even with Georgia and Texas stinking the joint up in 2010, teams with higher recruiting rankings beat teams with lower recruiting rankings two-thirds of the time they faced.
- When the Martinezes and Nebraska have bigger qualms about the Corn Fed arrangement than the NCAA did, what does that tell you?
- Before we start patting ourselves on the back over Georgia’s apparently stellar 2011 recruiting class, note that this list of Chris Low’s doesn’t have a single Dawg on it.
- Some things you can’t make up: the Clorox® Toilet Bowl™. And how appropriate that Jesse Palmer was the QB.
- Somebody in South Carolina thinks it’s important for politicians to be able to pack heat at a college football game.
- Good to see that Louisville wants to keep Charlie Strong happy.
- First blogger to go there: “We will see the John Brantley this year we expected in 2010, not the one we got.”
- I wonder if Paul Johnson treated his dates the way he treats his recruits.
- And I am shocked, shocked to hear that this sort of stuff goes on: “I would simply say that that’s pure message board stuff,” Reale said. “I have no idea where that kind of thing came from or from whom, but there’s no basis in fact.”
Low is a Vol homer. My sources are telling me Drew maybe be headed to Clemson. Pagan to UGA. Of course my sources are usually wrong.

Good argument could be made for Durham to be among the most improved last year, but who cares? The sooner I can forget 2010 the better. In fact, I think we need a collective meditation session to remove the season from our memories …

What caused the extreme improvement of Nick Fairley this year? He obviously has great talent and has a nasty edge that could work well in the NFL but I don’t know if I would use the top pick on him. I see Haynesworth 2.o

Roids? Just saying.
How often does a big man go from nothing to #1 overall pick?
Tony Mandarich? though he was a 2x All American his pro career indicates without roids he was a plugger.

Georgia had players in 2010 who could have made somebody’s UNBIASED list of most improved. So naturally there were no Dawgs on Low’s list. Hey, how about Finebaum’s list of “most improved.” I’m sure there’ll be some Dawgs on there…

Palmer associating himself with Clorox is just another example of the wonderful life college football prepared him for.
Maybe he can afford better suits now.

Let’s see, player A sells his personal property to another fan and that’s a violation of NCAA rules. Player B is listed as the owner of a company that does business with the very school he plays for and that’s NOT a violation of NCAA rules. Yeah, that makes sense. Fair too.

Harbach also predicts that Tennessee will win the SEC East, so I will take this guy’s predictions with a large grain of salt.
Brantley should indeed be better than he was last year. But that said, even with the poor coaching Brantley received last year, I am not convinced he has that “it” factor so necessary for a championship QB.

He also has numerous typos and grammatical errors throughout his post. Not to mention saying it is probable that a team go 5-3 or 4-4 and win the East.
LikeLike
A team going 5-3 and winning a divison can certainly happen. LSU in 2001 had a SEC record of 5-3 and won the West. USCe in 2010 had a 5-3 SEC record and won the East. No team with a 4-4 record has ever won the division
Because a 5-3 division winner has happened only twice in the 19 year history of division play does not make it probable for it to happen in 2011, but it is not unprecedented. However, 4-4 would be unprecedented.

Does it seem strange to anyone that a coach (ACC coach of the year) looking for work has not spoken with his agent of 12 yrs. in at least a week?

To talk about what?
It’s not like there are a bunch of HC or OC openings out there right now.

I think its pure misdirection by the agent.
I went to Happy China Buffet for lunch yesterday and it had been cleaned out. Coincidence… c’mon Senator.

Ralph was just passing through on his way to Lake Oconee home, and stopped at a few, okay several, local eateries. No way CMR can hire Friedgen. It would be a Marion Campbell move, without the alumnus connection.

As to “Most Improved” my only suggestion would be Dent.
“Biggest Disappointment” would be a tie b/w AJ and Washaun (yes I know the NCAA hates Georgia blah blah blah. But c’mon, if you’re gonna break a rule, put some effort into covering your tracks).
Georgia would really clean up in “Best Newcomer” where we’d certainly place Aaron and Alec and maybe even Kenarious.

biggest disappointment AJ? please explain.
you do know they don’t base these on a how a player plays, not what he does in his free time.
as far as pure playing, AJ was by no means a disappointment. he had another highlight reel year when he was on the field and has cemented himself as a top 5 pick in the draft.

I was not disappointed in him, but my question is: how many games did AJ play in in three years?

I’m (personally) holding the off field stuff against AJ.
I don’t question his play when he played. Just his leadership and wisdom in doing what he did w/ the jersey.

You’re right, there are some scumbags, but why would anyone become a reverend in their teenage years if they weren’t truly into it?

All allegiances aside, does anyone not agree with Johnson’s point on “commitment”?
LikeLike
I actually do, and although I have a strong rooting interest against him, I see his point that it’s not a double standard if he hosts someone else’s committed recruits. If a recruit is shopping around, then he’s not actually committed, so he’s fair game, so to speak. Johnson just doesn’t want to bide his time waiting for one of his “commitments” to come back to him.

“If you say you’re committed to Georgia Tech and you’re still visiting people, then in my mind, you’re not committed to Georgia Tech,” Johnson said.
While I understand Johnson’s policy, it’s unfortunate for the kids who just want to travel and enjoy the experience at other schools, especially kids that don’t have the financial means to do so otherwise. However, I don’t believe that’s what Tre Jackson had on his mind when visiting Florida State.

i was curious about this as well.. do you think kids just wanna party at a few other schools before they start playing for Tech.
I mean, you can’t really blame the kid if that’s the case.

I suspect what you say is more likely the case.

No, I actually don’t agree with it. I do see where he’s coming from, but at the same time, these are teenagers. Let’s say he’s 100% sure he wants to go to Tech, so he commits. Then, three weeks before signing day, these coaches from FSU (or wherever) are really on him hard, and they’re saying, come on, just take a look at our campus and see what you see…if you don’t like it, fine. A lot of times, people need to see that to make sure they’re making the right choice. Should the guy lose his scholarship offer because of it?
LikeLike
I would hope that if I was a coach recruiting a kid, I would have told him to do that before he commits to my school.
LikeLike
Well, I guess that depends on what school you’re pushing. Big time SEC schools have the luxury of encouraging kids to look other places. Georgia Tech doesn’t. If they’re getting close to pulling a big time recruit, the last thing they’re doing is encouraging him to see other places (just like they do with attractive girls).
LikeLike
Let me see him take the same stance with a 5-star kid at a position of need and I’ll praise him to the skies.
LikeLike
He’ll pull the scholarship on a Tech commit who visits another school, but he has no problem asking a player who’s committed to another school to visit Tech. I don’t like that. Lay off the kids who are committed elsewhere if you’re going to have that policy. Those who defend him saying that the other schools don’t have the same policy are missing the point, IMO.
And while it might please some who are tired of kids committing and de-committing almost daily, which can be tiring, I’m not sure it’s a great recruiting strategy in the long term, especially because 17 and 18 year olds are going to do this. Always.

Agreed. That logic only works with people because verbal commitments aren’t considered that serious.
Apply his logic to an engagement situation:
It’s not okay for the bride(or groom)-to-be to entertain the possibility of other guys (rightfully so), but it would be okay for the other guys/girls to be open to hooking up with the bride/groom-to-be because they’re already looking around, so they must not really be committed? Doesn’t work that way. If you think it’s wrong, it’s wrong both ways.

Brantley will be the QB we thought he would be in 2010 – until he won’t. Then he’ll be a sleeper pick in the draft. Then he’ll just need to get in the right system. Then…

Not too concerned about Low’s list since 5 of the most improved are gone. Also in fairness, who from UGA would you have put on the list as Most Improved? Possibly Kris Durham but I think his award should have been SEC Comeback Player. Houston was better but he already was one of the best in the SEC. No one had seen Murray before last season.
Don’t know how everyone else feels but Friedgen would be a good hire (though I think it is a complete longshot.) It would most likely be a short term hire though (1 season, maybe 2) but I think he still has the vacation home at Lake Oconee.

Georgia’s most improved player in 2010 was Akeem Dent.
He was second in the SEC with 122 tackles. This should serve him well in the NFL Draft.

Was just about to say that Dent at least deserved an honorable mention to be on that list if not actually be on it. What belin did with him was awesome. Can’t wait to see what Belin and Grantham do with Jarvis Jones, Samuel, Robinson, Washington, and the host of guys that redshirted last year and guys coming in this year. Despite all we lost at lb I honestly think this years group will be much better and deeper especially with so many guys that will be in their second year of the 3-4.
