“Speak up, Coach. I can’t hear you over the crowd noise.”

This story (h/t Doc Saturday) is chock full of awesome.

“I can remember in the third quarter, he’s pulling his cell phone out,” Harrell says of Texas Tech’s 2007 loss at Texas. “He always talked to me between series, so he’s talking to me and he pulls his cell phone out and he called the Big 12 commissioner. He’s like cussing out the Big 12 commissioner, telling him like, ‘These refs are screwing us. You better watch my post-game press conference because I’ve got some stuff to say.'”

Wouldn’t you have loved to have seen an enraged Mark Richt whip out a cell phone and call Mike Slive after the second targeting call in Nashville?

Just call the instant replay ref, he’s wired into Slive-Shaw central in B’Ham.

Shaw and Slive are realtime all day Saturday from their command center with every replay booth and offer their opinions on the reviewed calls.

I really would love to see Richt say “Are you fucking kidding me?” to one of these “The Longest Yard” refs the SEC has hired. And then fire a pass into his nuts.

I would be very glad to see him do it this weekend at the Ugliest Little Hovel on the Plains when the corrupt SEC officials screw us over again, as I am sure that they will. Wouldn’t even mind chipping some $$ to help pay his fine.

I would have liked to dial up Richt during the 4th quarter of the Vanderbilt game. The targeting calls, nor the injuries, were the reason the Dawgs lost to Vandy (or Mizzou for that matter). We always have to have some sort of excuse for the Dawgs shortcomings. Their shortcomings are on the sideline or coaches box and they they do not wear pads. Grantham and his inability to simplify his defense, in addition to this makeshift O-line, are the reason the Dawgs lost to Mizzou. Richt and his entire staff are why this team lost to Vandy. From a talent standpoint, the Dawgs should run circles around the ‘Dores every day of the week mad twice on Sunday. I have said it before, and I will say it again, Mizzou beat the Dawgs twice…Once in Athens and then a second time in Nashville. Richt was simply unable to regroup this team once their goals were lost. We all saw in Week 1 that this team was far from perfect with everyone healthy.

I honestly believe that following the Mizzou loss, a healthy UGA would have still lost to Vandy. This team was a rudderless ship after falling to the Tigers. Even with the number of players out, the Dawgs still fielded a more talented team than Vandy. It was not talent, or a lack of talent, that cost the Dawgs in Nashville. Just my opinion. Apparently you disagree.

Dude, I am dumber for having read this. You seriously believe UGA at full strength loses to Vandy? Save me the roach next time.

    • Forget the rudder talk. How could you watch Vandy’s defensive alignment in the second half and not think it was due to all the skill position guys being out?

      Like

      • Bingo, Senator – we refused to stretch the field and they doubled Conley all over the field. #31 is a good player but he’s not a #1 receiving option. If we convert the FGs on our 1st possessions of each half into TDs, that alone would have changed the complexion of the game.

Because we still had a completely healthy O-line, 2 serviceable RB’s, our 4 year starter at QB, and WR’s that were getting reps for the past 3-4 weeks and 2 healthy TE’s. With that being said, it is for me to take the rudder out of it. This team did not have any fight left in them once things became difficult. And that is directly related to the week prior. I do think that if this game were played a week or two before the Mizzou game, the Dawgs win.

        • First off, I don’t know where you’re getting the WR’s getting 3-4 weeks’ worth of reps, because they were stuck with guys who’d been playing on the scout team for the UT game. It’s ridiculous to expect those kind of players to be SEC-ready in that short a time and in any event, they aren’t anywhere near the level of the kids they’re replacing.

Second, about this rudder of yours – how was Richt able to right the ship so successfully after last year’s loss to SC, which seemed far more devastating at the time?

Great question about the USC loss last year. My only thought on that is this years team made no bones about their goals of a national championship all off season. The Clemson game, while disappointing, did not derail those dreams. The Missouri game crushed those dreams.

Call it what you will. I am just fed up with everyone looking for an excuse following every single loss. Yes, the offensive injuries have hurt this team. No one questions that. But there are another 2/3’s of this team that are capable of stepping up and carrying their share of the load. There are no misconceptions as to how this team won their early ball games. The entire world knew that the Georgia offense was going to take a step back against Missouri following the rash of injuries suffered throughout the season and in the Tennessee game. That was CTG’s time to shine and prove all of his naysayers (me included) wrong. That’s when the O-line plays with an anger and fire rarely seen in Athens. That’s when the ST’s unit plays as if they have something to prove. However, Grantham decided to pour more gasoline onto the fire. Coach Friend gave him a helping hand with yet another poor showing from his O-line. And Murray did not have his best game either (yes, the reasons are many and no I am blaming him for the loss). Now with all national title dreams crushed and their SECCG aspirations all but lost, the Dawgs let Missouri beat them again in Nashville. And that I place on the coaches. The injuries this team has suffered merely brought it light the many issues otherwise masked by a stellar offense. realize this is not a popular opinion, and I am fine with that. GATA

I, for one, remember that moment when you were Anti-Skeptic Dawg. It was brief. It was succinct. It was short-lived. It, along with all our hopes and dreams, was gone quicker than a cat can lick its ass.

“Now with all national title dreams crushed”

Wasn’t that last year not this year? Notwithstanding all the pre-season happy-talk, everyone knew or should have known that the only unit that has the inventory to replace a defense each year is in Tuscaloosa, not Athens, Baton Rouge or anywhere else.

Thank you! There are two projects I am studying now to get rid of a case of the nerves before Auburn. The first would involve a wormhole to get to a place where I could replace the C’s I busted my ass to get in Organic. Then I realized, who needs another bad trip

The second involves an adaptation of Elaine Seinfeld to Dan Mullen who coaches “probably the best 4-5 team in the country.” Except after this weekend when they’ll be “probably the best 4-6 team in the country.” My initial study involves bird penetration and collisions occurring in the galaxy around Dan’s giant freek head:

“That bird flew right into your head, like he couldn’t avoid it!”

Umm… in that game, Vandy had the better receiver (Matthews) and 2-3 running backs better than our two. Plain and simple.

We had a gameplan those kids could manage so we could get out of there alive and to the off week. Things we could not afford to do were:

          -Drop a punt
          -Fumble a punt snap
-Have a bad, bad drive-extending call go against us

If any 1 of those 3 don’t happen, we win. With those 3, we were not in shape to beat them. I just can’t believe Richt told Swann to drop the punt and Barber to drop the snap. Those were dumb moves.

-Not to mention we lost our best pass rusher for most of the game due to another bogus targeting call in the first half. Who knows what would have happened to the Vandy O if he had been in the game?

Your right. The defense didn’t step up and make a play early in 2nd quarter when we were down (the pick 6) to get us back in the game when things were going badly or make a 4th down stop that got taken away by the ridiculous targeting call on Wilson after the muffed punt. Your right. They just folded at the first sign of adversity.

          Like

    • It took a muffed punt, a botched punt snap, and two bogus targeting calls for Vandy to win by all of 4 points. Our pick 6 and their fake field goal offset each other. There’s no way the Dawgs lose to Vandy with JSW, Gurley, Marshall, Bennett, Matthews, JHC, and a healthy Rumph. We would have lit up that Vandy defense like the 4th of July like we did in Athens last year. With Gurley at 100% alone, Georgia likely wins both the Missouri and Vandy games. Should they have won anyway? Yes, but to say that they would have lost to Vandy with a healthy team as well, that’s just ridiculous.

Stat line (full strength): Murray 18/24, 310 yds, 4 TDs
      Gurley 21/155 yds, 2 TDs
      Marshall 14/120 yds 1 TD
Mason 8/11 98 yds 1 TD (garbage time)
      Yeah, UGA loses.

I agree that lack of talent did not lose the game against Vandy. We had enough to win, and I agree with your criticism of the coaching on that game, if not your tone. However, at full strength, we probably would not have been as demoralized as you are suggesting, and would have won regardless of any morale issues.

If a meteor fell out of the sky and wiped out all but 11 UGA players, Georgia still should have beaten Vandy…just because they’re Georgia. It’s an entitlement to some…beating Vandy.

It really isn’t conjecture to say that. It was a 4th down stop that would have given us the ball with a two possession lead in the middle of the 4th quarter. The game would have been over – that’s why Vandy was going for it in the first place.

ahh, we all know Richt bites his tongue so he can bite the head off of the halftime reporters.

Also, I would like to see the players come together on this…if you know you didn’t target someone and you get ejected…slightly disrobe before leaving the field. Calmly remove your helmet, gloves, and shoes. Just leave them for the trainer to pick up in the middle of the field, then walk directly to the locker room down the middles of the field without the need of an escort. Then, when you reach the locker room, have a cold beer and cheer your team on. You have done well.
