“We don’t want the game to move, but don’t give us a reason to move it.”

Good assessment of the Cocktail Party’s future from a Jacksonville beat writer’s perspective here.

If there’s any legitimate threat to the game leaving Jacksonville, it’d be a combination of two things: not acquiescing to the schools’ contractual demand of the Georgia-Florida game capacity remaining 82,917, along with any future push from Georgia to maybe bring Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium into the equation on a biennial basis.

It’s no secret the replacement venue for the demolished Georgia Dome has become a huge neutral-site player on the college football landscape. With an expanded capacity of 75,000, though it’s almost 8,000 less seats than TIAA Bank Field, the only way Atlanta can significantly outspend Jacksonville for the Georgia-Florida game in terms of payout would be to charge at least double for club seats.

“The biggest threat [for Jacksonville] is somebody comes along and offers $5 million per team,” said TaxSlayer Gator Bowl president Rick Catlett. “But to get that, you have to set the same price as Atlanta and Dallas gets for neutral-site games. So those club seats that are $125 [at TIAA Bank Field] might have to go as high as $300. I know Georgia won’t want to do that to its fan base.”

In other words, the game isn’t coming to Atlanta.  But you knew that, right?

  1. Georgia won’t want to do that to it’s fan base? Somebody hasn’t been paying attention.

With that said; either leave it alone or just go to a ‘home and home’ and be done with all of this. I’m guessing that is where Kirby is as well.

Playing the game in the dome would be fun; but what makes Jax – Jax is the weekly build up to the game, getting there early for your favorite tail gating spot.

You can’t really do any of that in Atlanta. I’m find with leaving it in Jax (tradition – all that good stuff); but there is a side of me that would like to see Kirby go into the swamp and thump the Gators much like they did when Spurrier came into Sanford Stadium the same year the Braves won the World Series.

We’re going to find out sooner than most people think about who has the juice inside B-M.

I’ll put my money on Kirby Smart. This is the last contract in which Jacksonville will own the totality of the Georgia-Floria Game. I think we’ll move to a cycle of 4 years on campuses and 1 year in Jacksonville as a kind of compromise. You can’t do campus-campus-Jax, because it doesn’t divide evenly into a decade. You can do campus-campus-campus-campus-Jax, because that does divide evenly into a decade.

Kirby is going to get his way. As much as the boosters who pull feckless McGarity’s strings want to stay in Jax, they want to keep Kirby happy more.

The AA gets more money from Jacksonville to fund his Death Star construction projects and the Cocktail Party keeps its unique tradition for recruiting purposes, or he gets an extra recruiting weekend every other year while losing the recruiting value associated with the neutral site game.

I still don’t understand why he has decided to push his goodwill chips into the middle of the table on this issue.

The net gain of keeping it home vs. going to Jacksonville is about 4 million dollars. Georgia makes about $2M a home game. They get $3M per game from Jax, but in 2 years, they’d only have one home game vs. two paydays from Jax.

Now, $4M seems like a lot of money to you and me. But with SEC paydays increasing every year, and the fact that Georgia is the most solvent program in the conference and one of the most profitable in the entire country, $4M doesn’t mean as much as it would to say, the NATS.

If you don’t think Kirby cares, you’d be 100% wrong. Kirby doesn’t talk about, especially to the media, anything he doesn’t care about for real. He’s as calculating as his old boss in that way. If he’s talking about it, he cares about it. He wants this game on campus. That’s why I said we’re about to find out who has the real juice in Athens.

UGA also gets travel expenses covered by Jax, on top of the straight payout.

The idea that a couple of million dollars a year doesn’t mean as much to B-M cuts against everything we’ve ever seen from the athletic department.

It’s what it means for Kirby, if we are to believe the words reportedly as from his mouth. Yeah, it’s worth a couple of mil that will go towards his recruiting needs and against some other kinda’ B-M needs. He gets to play on an even SEC recruiting field with that extra recruiting game not at a neutral site; at least in his mind. Maybe his by-now-claimed couple of mil will help him attain Zenith Recruitment for UGA. Who would deny him at that stage?

That it’s being shaped up by the sports media as a test of Kirby’s strength within B-M’s GOBs is just the media ramping up to this story and playing Rushin’ the Rulin’ (recruitment at a neutral site SEC game) in the process.

If he expects everyone to fall in line behind him on this, he better accept and meet the expectations that would come with it.

Here’s the thing, you’re assuming ALL of DawgNation is against the idea of moving the game from Jacksonville. Every poll or survey I’ve seen shows it’s split pretty much down the middle. So before Kirby began speak about what he wants, he already had half of all Georgia fans on his side.

I have seen those reports, too.
My guess is that respondents fit into one of three groups.
              1. The group that actually buys tickets to the game and attends;
              2. The group that gives to Magill or Hartman, buys season tickets to home games but does not buy tickets to the Florida game; and
              3. The group in Dawgnation that does not contribute and does not buy season tickets or tickets to the Florida game.

Obviously the third group is the largest (the stadium capacities put a hard limit on the number of people who can buy tickets through UGA.)
The second group would be larger than the first.
I wonder how the vote breaks down within each group. My guess (and yes, it is just a guess) is that the third group would have big majority saying, “Move it to home and away,” and the first group would have big majority saying, “keep it in Jacksonville.”
The most interesting question, to me, is how the second group (the folks financially supporting the team who do not buy UF game tickets) voted. Another guess of mine is that since the numbers of potential voters in the third group are so much larger than the potential voters in the first group, then in order to make the final tally about 50% to 50% the second group would probably be in favor of keeping it in Jacksonville.

I could be totally wrong; it is possible that the only respondents were the membranes of the Dawgnation who contribute and buy UF tickets, and half of those want it moved. That would surprise me, but I cannot disprove it.

I also cannot prove my next hypothesis, which is that the voters in the first two groups will carry more weight with McGarity and Morehead than the voters in the 3rd group. UGA gets no money from those people, so losing their support over the issue doesn’t cost anything.

This is a long way of saying that the poll results showing 50%-50% split by respondents may not show the influence behind each side of the vote.

The fact that McGarity cites it, though, without explaining the breakdowns, so smell like a PR campaign to justify the move to the paying customers.

I’m a season ticket holder. I know of many like me who want the game moved to Athens because I’m tired of paying for home tickets with one less game every other year, and not being able to see the best rivalry game we have without shelling out a ton of extra money for the tickets, hotel, gas, food, etc.

If Bama-Auburn can move on campus, so can Georgia-Floriduh.

Corch, the problem is, as soon as you move it to home and home it ceases to be the best rivalry game we have. The location is literally the DNA of the game. If it doesn’t take place in Jacksonville it ceases to be the WLOCP. People won’t be coming to Athens on Wednesday and Thursday to stay for three or four days, tailgate, play golf and hang out at the beach because you can’t do those things in Athens. It simply will not be the same game.

I am in Group 1. I really have no strong feelings either way but if forced to vote I would keep it in Jacksonville. The “recruiting disadvantage” argument is not persuasive to me. I do understand the value of taking care of Hartman Fund contributors from SE Georgia for whom round trip to Athens is inconvenient and the Jacksonville game is “their game.” I also believe that, at least now, we have the advantage on the field every year, while going every other year to Gainesville would reduce our advantage we have every odd numbered year.

Also, if we make less money over a two year period McGarity will try to squeeze the deficit from you and me.

No, it doesn’t. The funding is literally not what Kirby is talking about, because funding will never a problem for UGA. He’s talking about the ability to host recruits at home in the best gameday atmosphere there is. Bama can do that with Auburn, and vice versa. We can’t do that with going to Jacksonville.

Kirby is telling you what he wants. If giving him what he wants helps us win a national title because we hosted a group of recruits who help us cover the backend on on a 2nd and 26 to win that title, then YOU GIVE HIM WHAT HE WANTS!

I’m with you on the Kirby thing. I like what he appears to be doing but, so far, he has achieved Richt’s results with better talent. Recruiting is better but the win total is identical, as is the championship total. I think Kirby’s upside is higher but I’m not ready to turn control of every aspect of the football program over to him just yet. Kirby has opinions on everything related to the program but, like everyone, he has to decide which issue he is really willing to go all in on. Honestly, I don’t see the game in Jacksonville being a hill Kirby is willing to die on.

This old chestnut, “He’s just done exactly what Richt did.”

          No. Not even close.

Richt NEVER went undefeated vs. the East in all 15 years here. Kirby is 12-0 vs. the East the last two years.

Richt’s teams never averaged a double-digit points differential of the East in a season. Kirby’s done it two years in a row.

Richt NEVER made it to the championship round. Kirby’s done so, winning the Rose Bowl.

Richt’s team NEVER attained a number 1 ranking at any point after a season began. They started a season number 1 in 2008, but didn’t earn it on the field. Kirby’s team was ranked number 1 at some point in 2017 and 2018.

Totally absurd comparison. Absolutely ridiculous. Their records are essentially the same. Both won an SEC title and both lost in the same game. Kirby advanced to the final simply because there were 4 slots. Richt would have done the same in 02 had there been a 4 team playoff. Richt also never had a season where he went 1-3 against Tech, Auburn, Tennessee and Florida. Never. I agree that Kirby is in better position if no other reason than his recruiting advantage. But he has made enough bone headed coaching moves in big games that I am not ready to cede everything.

Firstly, to claim that Richt “would’ve done” the same thing had the rules been the same in 2002 is absurd. For all we know of Richt’s history at UGA, like with other huge games, he would’ve been blown out like became his calling card.

Secondly, Kirby’s Georgia team is DESTROYING the SEC Eastern Division unlike any Georgia team has ever done. What this team has done the last two years is HISTORICAL. You could say it’s absurdly ridiculous.

We were 12-1 after SEC championship game with a single digit loss in Jacksonville (still shouldn’t have lost that game). I don’t know if we would have won the title in 2002, but I do know if the current system were in place that year, we would have been playing Ohio State instead of Florida State on New Year’s Day for a shot.

The records are similar the first 3 years of Smart vs. Richt. You can cherrypick every stat you want, but the won-loss records are similar. Has Kirby over the last 2 years been better than Richt’s last 2 years in Athens? No doubt about it.

Kirby’s not an idiot, but at the same time, of course he’d 100% want all games on campus. I’m telling you what I’d do. Move 8 of 10 games every decade on campus, return to Jax 2 times every 10 years.

It’s not about worshipping at any high altar, Senator. It’s simply seeing which way the wind blows. If Kirby doesn’t get his way on this, will he leave Georgia? No, or at the very least, most likely not. But if he doesn’t get his way on this, if and when he does win a national title, I think he’d be much more apt to throw his weight around. If McGarity pushes back on this, and then Kirby goes out and wins it all, the changes he’ll enact in B-M will make Greg’s head spin, beginning with who occupies the AD office.

Kirby has a one track mind, as all great football coaches should. If anyone else isn’t rolling in his direction, then they’re in his way. I’m betting on Kirby, because I’m betting on us winning a title or two in the next five years.

Jacksonville wants the game and will make concessions, unlike Atlanta and the Braves. It will come down to how much more $$ both schools will squeeze out of the deal.

What I think too. Kirby is too much of a traditionalist to make this crazy move, unless JAX is dumb enough to not up the ante. $3MM doesn’t have the same weight as it was last time around, and both recipients are stronger financially. Only logical they have to raise the rates to keep UGA and FU happy, and they don’t want to answer to angry business constituents.

Jacksonville has a lot of taxpayers to spread higher payouts over, and would be smart to hit other tax jurisdictions up for money because they benefit as well. I think it is 80+% certain this gets done and the tradition is preserved. Neither party has a decent argument to tear it down, both sides benefit and there is no disadvantage to either. Seems like a lot blustering to establish better negotiating position. Kirby has things going his way, doubt he wants to get the blame for ripping apart such a great 85 year old tradition and tarnishing his legacy. Why would he go out on that limb? If anything, Mullen should be the one advancing the recruiting disadvantage, Kirby doesn’t sound too smart firing from this particular angle. But then, it doesn’t seem that Mullen really understands the whole recruiting thing anyway.

2 teams chosen back then versus 4 today. Never said it should not have counted, I said it should not be compared…..also too hard to compare teams, subjective.

Things look pretty damn even to me, too early to tell who the better coach is. But I certainly hope you are right, it certainly feels more promising. We just don’t know yet.

How do things look fairly even? They’re not even close.

Richt’s teams won games in the division mostly by an average of one score, and he never went undefeated against the East. Kirby’s teams are dominating the division at a historical pace, going unbeaten the last two years.

It’s not close to being even.

LOL!!…..unbelievable. To me, ”a win is a win, they all count the same”. If you can’t see how even it is from what I posted, I can’t help you.

If you are down now to only score differential, you win.

Smart is clearly the better coach, no doubt….SMH.

Just to put some apples with your “apples”…Kirby wasn’t coaching against Spurrier or Meyer (who both won Nattys from the East BTW). In fact, when he has faced coaches who have actually won a Natty (Saban and Malzahn) his record is 3-3. So if you’re gonna compare records against the East, you may wanna also factor in the level of coaching there as well. Not even close to the same caliber now as then. Dominating the East has been impressive. But that’s not the goal, is it? And before you reply with the “butthurt,” I am not a Richt apologist. I see the potential upside with Kirby. I’m Just saying you are doing some cherry picking as well sir.

Thinks the only one “butthurt” is him, he doesn’t like that some do not agree with him. I haven’t seen one “apologist” in this thread yet….

Still too early to tell, but I certainly hope that Kirby is better. I would think that is what we all would want.

HA! As if McScroogy wouldn’t jump at the chance to rub his paws together and cackle at the thought of ripping off the fan base for mo money, mo money, mo money!

I have heard Kirby wants to movie because of recruiting, didn’t the ncaa pass a rule that teams can recruit at neutral sight games if both teams agree? I thought it was a few years ago but Richt and the uf coach at the time side they didn’t want to? Maybe it was only the home team able to have visitors, is Kirby going to revisit this with Mullen?

If you host a recruit for a neutral site game it counts as the official visit. That is definitely not an ideal situation.

Exactly, Reipar. Plus, because the team returns to Athens Saturday night, the coaches lose the Sunday visit time in Athens with the recruits. When the visit is in Athens the coaches have face time Friday evening, too, and if the recruits are in Jacksonville and UGA is traveling Friday we lose some Friday face time opportunity, too.
Plus, every ticket UGA gets to TIAA Bank Field that does not go to the band and students go to contributors at the following levels. Only folks with Hartman Fund scores of $60,000.00 or above get club level seats, and only Hartman Fund contributors at the $10,000.00 or higher level got them.

I do not know how many recruits we would host at the UF game, but figure, since the recruit and family are invited, maybe 4 tickets per recruit. The recruiting hosts and hostesses would likewise need tickets. All of those tickets would come from tickets formally sold to 5 digit contributors. That is a problem, too.

  12. Interesting I never hear all this over the red river rivalry. At least not on this level. So few traditions left. Btw _ the swamp sucks. Horrible arena. So much talk about our home game without talking about their home game.

    • These people who want the game home and home completely ignore this. I don’t want that fan base in Athens ever again. I also don’t think a game in Hogtown every other year sounds very good either.

But Kirby is going to bring a national championship to Athens if only we didn’t have to play a game in Jacksonville for recruiting. That excuse is as bad as the weather, the bus to Atlanta for the plane to Jacksonville, or the game is in Florida excuses we heard for years before that. Give me a break.

All this for Kirby stating about what he feels is a deficit to those recruiting heights that he can obtain (his way of thinking, being a HC and all…). He is trying to up his recruiting game and if you can’t coldly look at it his way, no harm – no foul.

You want him to recruit and coach big enough to give you that NC you covet for the team, right? Pony up, beginning with your emotional attachments to this one.

        • Give me a break, Cojones. We’re recruiting at a level we’ve never experienced.

Have you thought about the side of the story that guys see the Cocktail Party and say, “I want to be a part of that”?

If we leave Jax, we leave with our tails between our legs and will deserve every bit of grief thrown our way.

            • I agree. I also think all of this is just bluster for the next round of negotiations. I go back to my original comment. Kirby wins either way by getting more money for the program or by getting his coveted one recruiting weekend. If this were happening, we would already be saying we weren’t signing the next deal regardless of the financial offer.
