Wednesday buffet

Check out the tasty morsels set out for your enjoyment today:

  • Hell hath no fury like a school scorned. David Reaves’ departure hasn’t set well with many of the Gamecock faithful, it seems (h/t Chattanooga Times Free Press). And he does come off somewhat weaselly in that interview (there is a distinction between visiting a family and a prospect – right, dude).  One wonders how much enjoyment Phil Fulmer is getting out of this.
  • What were they smoking? How was the GPOOE™ not a unanimous first team All-SEC selection by the coaches?  Don’t get me wrong; it’s pretty cool that Knowshon wound up as the only unanimous pick on offense, but still…
  • So much for the best possible matchups. Just like it already does in baseball, the NCAA admits it’s going to consider the cost-effectiveness of postseason matchups in more detail than ever before.  Because playoffs are all about quality meetings, unlike that crappy ol’ BCS.
  • Bigger fish to fry? Speaking of the BCS, an overwhelming majority of people surveyed by Seton Hall University think Obama should keep his nose out of the college football postseason.
  • The three amigos. Matt Stafford, Calvin Johnson and Reggie Ball as teammates?  Stafford doesn’t have a problem with that.
  • Old habits die hard. So, this is how the University of Arkansas defines “commitment”:  an $8.75 million dollar buyout if Bobby Petrino leaves UA for another head coaching job before the end of the year.  By the way, speaking of habits, it’s good to see that the Arky faithful haven’t lost their touch for making FOIA requests.

If coaches couldn’t vote for their own players, how was anyone a unanimous selection?

  2. Unanimous is defined as receiving all eleven eligible votes.

Since Stafford was 2nd team QB, I’m assuming some coach voted him 1st team.

Possibly Nutt since Ole Miss kept Tebow in check (?) Could even be Saban since he’s just a vindictive tool, or even CMR because he’s so loyal and values the pro set.

I wish they released the ballots.

Is Reggie Ball the Laundry Technician or Scout Team Specialist for the Lions?

I wish Staff would just come out and confirm that he’s leaving for God sakes. This daily speculation is driving me nuts.

Reggie Ball is in charge of keeping up with the downs for the offensive coordinator. HA! HA!

I dunno, Senator. I don’t think even well grounded critiques, much less highly speculative ones, of a system that allows to teams to compete and advance until a champion is determined are relevant to attempting to prove its inferiority to a system based on preseason polls, politicized voting by an uniformed electorate and computers.

    But that’s just me.

    @ Ally,

With Colt McCoy effectively saying he doesn’t want to play in Detroit so he’s not coming out, it sounds to me that Stafford’s mind is made up from his comments. He’s thought it through, and he’s making comments about “let the winning rub off”.

That doesn’t sound like the mindset of someone who wants to come back and give it one more run at a BCS title. However, it was fun while it lasted.

Stafford will be doomed to eternal failure unless Sam Bradford comes out and Matthew magically ends up sliding to the middle of the 1st round. He is not in the stratosphere mentally of Matt Ryan and having the weight of expectations of being the #1 pick will relegate him to Ryan Leaf/Jeff George status.

That’s really smart. The lowest seed to EVER win the tournament was 8, and that was 23 years ago. Might as well help those smaller schools save some money on travel – and create a higher chance some of their fans can make the trip.

The NCAA tournament is a lot of games. Factors like that are additionally important.
