“We don’t want to represent that at all.”

Apparently a little dust up with some Missouri players before the game wasn’t enough ($$).

… When the game ended, a few players from each team had to be separated by coaches, including Kirby Smart, who cut short his postgame handshake with Eli Drinkwitz to make sure his team didn’t add a melee to the night’s list of problems.

What happened to pointing to the scoreboard and letting that do all the talking?

… Nose tackle Zion Logue, in his fourth year on the team, said that at Sunday workouts, after the coaches left the room, the players held an informal version of a players-only meeting.

“It’s a player-led team,” Logue said. “We sat down as a team and said we have some stuff to fix before we go into this next week.”

This definitely isn’t last year’s team.

  1. Let’s see if there’s follow through…then we’ll know what kind of leadership we have

Yep. With the matriculation of a 6’6” 350lb smiling enforcer and his mates came a leadership vacuum. Unfortunately the baser element filled the space. That’s not unexpected.
Hopefully the team has seen the error of their ways as some of the boys sit a couple weeks being humbled.

I think it’s, interestingly, a defense-only problem. I don’t see a leadership vacuum/maturity issue on the other side of the ball.
The problem there has been much noted, re: OL play, available WRs, and putting the ball on the ground. But the D does seem to have a leadership vacuum on and off the field (and regarding who was the leader last year, do not forget about Mr. Dean).

I think you’re right. Maybe these upper class men can lay down some rules that are to be adhered to regardless.

What’s disappointing is who was doing the shit talking, Moe. I’d expect Carter after three years in the program to know better. It’s understandable from a 20 year old and easily rectified.

I want to think that Missouri we’re the ones pushing the issue; a man can only be pushed so far. But who really knows.
And I also want to think Kirby addressed this very issue emphatically and did so with extreme prejudice and a whole lot of “word emphasizers” such as “What the fuck were you thinking?!”

I’m of the mind that it’s an isolated incident that we won’t see again this season. Kirby’s been around long enough to know how to deal with this shit.
I had a company of trainees who allowed themselves to be led by a couple of unredeemable recalcitrants. One cold, February Saturday night the CQ called me at home as I was about to step out on the town. He nor the First Sergeant could get them under control, which was unheard of in my experience.
I called my friend the Provost Marshall and asked him to bring a few of his skull crackers.
“It’s a slow night. I’ll bring the entire platoon, Russ. They live for this shit.”
I fell the company out of those warm WW2 barracks in their underwear in the windy 20 degree night, a squad of MP’s roughed up and shackled the two ringleaders and threw them in the back of their deuce and a half while the other MP’s paraded around menacingly with their batons.
I dismissed the men without saying much and never had anymore trouble from that rabble.
Of course Kirby can’t do anything such as that. But I’m sure he has something for those undisciplined assholes. He’s big on composure and the Dawgs were sorely lacking Saturday night.

I witnessed first hand a couple of those 2:00am formations. Whilst I too was under the influence of NCO club 3.2 beer, but even as an NCO, I always had the utmost respect for “Top”
              He was God in BDU’s.
              “Unredeemable recalcitrants” ? Hahahaha

              Give Kirby’s your provost’s number.

The yankee Army is run by NCO’s. I was in command but the First Sergeant was in charge. When the CO has to get involved with NCO business? Somebody’s going to jail. That’s not the time to be diplomatic. You support your men without question so they know you have their back.
Being friendly with the MP’s can be beneficial in more ways than one.
                😉

Blanket party works wonders also. There might have been one or two when I was a platoon Sgt.

I was “peripherally involved” in a well-deserved blanket party as a trainee. As an officer? Wouldn’t know nothing about that. Congressional inquiries and all.

  2. Skeptic Dawg

I find it a tad strange that this group is so unfocused. Kirby has been a terrific motivator who speaks from a position of experience having won titles throughout his tenure at with Saban and now one at Georgia. Guess these kids think that they deserve a title and ring just because they are Dawgs. As a wise man once said, “Fuck around and find out”. This group of Dawgs is about the find out that they are not nearly as good as they think, and it might happen a couple three times if they are not careful. I am a little shocked at the lack of player leadership this year. One would think that Nolan Smith, Chris Smith, Robert Beal, Stetson Bennett, and Kearis Jackson would be suffice leaders. We are nearly at the halfway point of the season and this group is still jacking around. Tough to see this group winning the East. Is Tennessee is Clubber Lang and are we Rocky who has lost the eye of the tiger?

  3. Missouri was chippy and shit talking from jump. We took the bait big time.

Yep. A young team will fall for that shit. The fact that a veteran like Logue is stepping up to nip this in the bud says a lot.

The idea that we lack discipline is getting overblown. My take is we’re playing upwards of 60 kids each game and still getting a feel for who belongs on the field and who doesn’t.

Missouri always runs their mouth. They have from the 1st year they came into the league. Not sure what they do with everybody else, but for some reason, they have always felt the need to stalk some “stuff” with Georgia. The fact that the older guys called for a team only meeting is aa good thing. They are likely seeing more than this going on and want to put aa stop to it now.

The fact remains – our guys shouldn’t have been on that end of the field. Staying on your end denies the enemy an opportunity to be “chippy”.

Did Pickens give these guys a pep talk on his way out last year? How to talk shit and, if needed, slam a dude into the wall?

Pre-game scuffle & post-game scuffle with a cheap shot chop block in the middle….might explain why Dumas Johnson was flying around like a mad man(not his best game).

We are going to be everyone’s Super Bowl and we need to prepare like it…

That sounds good for the sound bite, and I’m sure Kirby and staff are trying to pound that message in, but it has a lot to to with the hunger within…are you starving for that meal your hunting or are you only wanting the trophy?

We need to be starving to pound them into submission…we were early but I think the boys thought they were going to waltz their way back to The Benz after 3 weeks. Hopefully these last 2 weeks have been smelling salts and have regained their full attention to detail and reignited their hunger.

        Time will tell.

        Go Dawgs!

Next year Missouri plays in Athens. I expect, if the Dawgs have gathered some composure that the scoreboard will indeed do the talking. I remember the Vanderbilt game last year. Wonder if it will be a clean their faces with turf, leave butt hurt, and wishing they never had to play the Dawgs again.

Was at that game. It was almost as one-sided at the Tech game on the field and in the stands. We owned about 85% of the fans that day, which has become pretty typical in Nashville. We’ll go next year – it’s a nice trip. 🙂

Glad the players are stepping up finally. While last Saturday night sucked, at least we won and the players got to see that they can come back from 10 down late in the game. But they need to quit fucking around or they’re going to find out.

  11. Missouri has been chippy with us since joining the SEC. Maybe more than anyone else. There is always extracurricular BS when we play them. Talk, shoves, late hits, etc. Also, that game was another case of concussion inconsistency.

Most frustrating is our OL not knocking someone’s head in when Bennett took a forearm to the head when trying to get up after being taken down hard. Not only did they look soft for most of the game, they let shit like that happen. Meanwhile, the Mizzou OL is doing chop blocks on our DL.
