Steele feels that the fact that we play South Carolina next week and Boise has a bye could be the difference in the game? There are many reasons we could possibly lose the game but look ahead factor is not one of them.

The more I think about it, the more I think that 14th team is Va Tech because the money/tv contract are just too much for them to look past. They know they’ll never get that in the ACC.

The Knoxville beat writer is insane. South Carolina will be a good football team again this year, but they won’t be in Atlanta. And if they end up playing for the BCS National Championship, to borrow a phrase from Boss Hogg, I will literally eat my hat.

Agree with JBJ. I think South Carolina has a pretty decent chance to win the East again. They are pretty darn good on both sides of the ball and their schedule isn’t exactly daunting.

However, playing for the BCS is another matter. I’ll eat Spurrier’s visor if that happens. I could see the Gamecocks getting to the SEC championship, but not without a couple losses behind them already.

I suppose the thing that bothers me is the emphasis placed on S&C as the panacea. To me the general psyche of the team is much more important than if they can lift another 50lbs on the bench.
Maybe Grantham can channel Erk this season to light a fire under some people. How awesome would it be to have him come out Saturday night smashing his forehead into helmets with blood streaming down his face? Especially with the new facemasks. Hell I would be fired up if he just came out with red paint down his face.
I agree with some other comments I have seen recently. I really expect the defense to be better this season. Having Tree in the middle just feels right.

The new S&C regime hasn’t focused on the amount of weight they can lift so much as it has on their endurance, and whether they can still be going strong late in the 4th quarter. It’s about stamina. (tee-hee)

I think this is pretty important. I wouldn’t call it more important than team chemistry, but there has been lots of evidence posted that last year’s team wasn’t able to keep it going at the ends of halves. And the Florida people were caught yelling on their sideline that we were going to tire out and were out of shape, no?

I think it’s a pretty good bet that the D will improve. They improved to #23 last year (despite problems). They have improved up the middle considerably with Geathers, Jenkins & Tree. Tyson at DE is a huge upgrade over last year’s Dobbs. We’ll need Jarvis Jones to deliver hits like Justin Houston. If C.Wash doesn’t produce (like last year), we’ve got Drew to step in. More talent, more depth, easier schedule, more experience with 3-4. I expect the D to move into the top 15 this year.

I think that improved S&C speaks to the psyche of the team. It takes a little more mental toughness to get those last reps in. To make sure that each rep counts and if those guys are putting in the work there, it will not be for nothing.

Last time I check OC Harsin was the Co-OC with the Texas Longhorns. At least that is what is on their website.
Who is the OC at Boise? I posted a comment a few days ago about the OCs at Auburn, Texas, and MSU. All spreads.
Now whether Boise runs a more up-tempo with HC Peterson and the OC will depend on the Dawgs. Nearly all spreads want to run an up tempo games due the forcing base D’s and creating more gaps and lanes. The more plays they run in a game, the opposing D is in trouble.
For me the Dawgs have to have a superb running game…inside and out…and the QB has to be in that mix.

Yes…Harsin is at Texas, co-OC with Applewhite. But the promotion from within probably does not affect them much as the HC is heavily involved in calling the O.

I’m getting over-anxious. I’ve got to dial it back a notch so I can watch the game in a civil manner with my in-laws and family. If I was watching by myself, I’d be breaking things. And that’s before the game starts.
I’ve got to pace myself. It’s a long season, and I think it’s going to be a good one.

I see no incongruity on having Mark Richt as being the 19th best coach in the country and being on the hot seat. If there was a 1:1 Correlation between between team ranking and coach ranking .
Rivals is stating that Georgia isn’t content being the 19th best team in the country.

The first 5:00 game minutes of this game scare the crap out of me. After re-watching the early part of the Va Tech game last year I can 100% see the Dawgs coming out the same way…overly juiced and over confident in bulldozing these guys. If we weather the first quarter of this game tied or ahead, I will feel 1,000 times better.

IMO, it’s critical to match them in speed, proper positioning and endurance.

VT wasn’t prepared. They didn’ believe it could happen.
Not a problem with the Dawgs. They’ll be mentally and physically prepared.
It will come down to scheming. Coaching. Richt and Co. can get it done. With UGA’s superior speed and size, with a red and black crowd, Peterson will have to scheme a perfect game. Richt only has to scheme a very good one. This (I hope, I pray) will be the Georgia team that took it to AU in the first half of last year (I’m still not convinced the onside kick traveled the yards, and that AU wasn’t offsides, but if the Dawgs had a stronger psyche, it wouldn’t have caused the landslide that followed) See “mental toughness” and you will find the key to this game..the same key UGA couldn’t find last year…….BTW, Missouri would make a good 14th but they may be too far west after A&M..West Virginia would be interesting…

to borrow an often-used (and abused) political term, VT would bring “Gravitas” with it to the SEC-as would FSU-but I don’t see the ‘Noles coming on board right away

VT regularly chokes on the big stage. What is their record against top 10 teams? VT has little tradition before Beamer and how much will they have after?
If the SEC is expanding FSU is target #1. FSU creates a virtual monoply for the top tier talent and TV in the state of Florida. FSU is a national brand bringing in viewers coast to coast.
Mizzou brings better recruiting grounds and TV markets than WVU and equal to VT. Mizzou does have a longer tradition than VT. Overall Mizzou is my 2nd choice for #14.
Clemson has an SEC culture but what do they bring to the table. SC does not grow enough talent to support 2 BCS conf teams and the TV market isn’t that big. Clemson last ACC title was about the time the UGA/Clemson game ended. They need the Georgia talent to win and without UGA they do not have the stage to sell to recruits.

I doubt FSU will happen. Neither Florida or Georgia want them in the SEC. Plus, the SEC already has the Florida TV market with UF. My money is on VT and the Virginia/DC TV market. Next I would think Mizzou would be a likely target.

I heard Chris Low on that dreadful Van Pelt show suggest NC State as a dark horse as they’re not enamored with the ACC and they have a more football friendly fan base.

Definitely not FSU. UGA,FU,Ala and SC among others will cast a dissenting vote. No way do we want to lay the mantle of SEC on FSU at this time. But you have my permission to ignore and pound your head against that wall if you want to. Don’t think you are going to convince many with the “market” logic.
We don’t dislike FSU, but to allow them to use the SEC label for sending kids to the NFL would be stupid of the states in close proximity of their recruiting. They can work your market magic in that big country metropolis that is isolated from the big markets of viewers in S. Fl.. Perhaps a look at the demographics around Tallahassee would do you good.

I am worried about Arron, he can get overly juiced in big games and make bad plays because he presses. His game against UF last year was a perfect example. He wanted to win that game more than any other and he was too wired for it. I want a surgeon to crave BSU up not a shotgun that could miss badly.

Murray would want us to settle down. He will get over whatever will ail him just like the rest of the team. Same for Boise St.
Sitting and waiting for disaster is counterintuitive for enjoying a college football game. I would be glad to send you a couple of Tarantulas that I mix and drink. If you drink an entire bottle of tequila before kickoff, it will begin to calm you by the first 5 minutes of the 4th qtr. In your advanced case it might not kick in until the last 5 mins of the game.
